Context of Deuteronomy 10:16
14Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to Jehovah thy God; the earth and all that is therein. 15Only, Jehovah took pleasure in thy fathers, to love them, and he chose their seed after them, [even] you, out of all the peoples, as it is this day. Circumcise then the foreskin of your heart, and stiffen your neck no more. 17For Jehovah your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty and the terrible, who regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward; 18who executeth the judgment of the fatherless and the widow, and loveth the stranger, to give him food and clothing.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 10:16
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Circumcise - the foreskin of your heart - A plain proof from God himself that this precept pointed out spiritual things, and that it was not the cutting away a part of the flesh that was the object of the Divine commandment, but the purification of the soul, without which all forms and ceremonies are of no avail. Loving God with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength, the heart being circumcised to enable them to do it, was, from the beginning, the end…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16On “circumcision” see Genesis 17:10. This verse points to the spiritual import of circumcision. Man is by nature “very far gone from original righteousness,” and in a state of enmity to God; by circumcision, as the sacrament of admission to the privileges of the chosen people, this opposition must be taken away ere man could enter into covenant with God. It was through the flesh that man first sinned; as it is also in the flesh, its functions, lusts…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-22Verses 12-22 We are here taught our duty to God in our principles and our practices. We must fear the Lord our God. We must love him, and delight in communion with him. We must walk in the ways in which he has appointed us to walk. We must serve him with all our heart and soul. What we do in his service we must do cheerfully, and with good will. We must keep his commandments. There is true honour and pleasure in obedience. We must give honour to God; and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16circumcise your hearts: This is a figure of speech. It uses the language of circumcision to describe an inner change. Circumcision was the physical sign of the covenant that God gave to Abraham (Genesis 17:9–14). Here, however, the command points to a deeper meaning. The people must remove stubbornness and sin from their hearts. This image includes both inward change and outward obedience to the covenant (Romans 2:28–29).Read the comment
