Context of Acts 10:46
44While Peter was yet speaking these words the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were hearing the word. 45And the faithful of the circumcision were astonished, as many as came with Peter, that upon the nations also the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out: for they heard them speaking with tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter answered, 47Can any one forbid water that these should not be baptised, who have received the Holy Spirit as we also [did]? 48And he commanded them to be baptised in the name of the Lord. Then they begged him to stay some days.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 44-48Verses 44-48 The Holy Ghost fell upon others after they were baptized, to confirm them in the faith; but upon these Gentiles before they were baptized, to show that God does not confine himself to outward signs. The Holy Ghost fell upon those who were neither circumcised nor baptized; it is the Spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44-48On the day of Pentecost, Peter told the people that if they stopped sinning, repented, asked forgiveness from God, and received baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, they would "receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (2:38; see also 19:1–7). As Cornelius and his household listened to Peter's message, they received the Holy Spirit just like the Jews had earlier. This event confirmed again that God did not favor one group over another (10:34–35). This event is…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4646. heard them speak with tongues and magnify God--As on the day of Pentecost it was no empty miracle, no mere speaking of foreign languages, but utterance of "the wonderful works of God" in tongues to them unknown (Ac 2:11), so here; but more remarkable in this case, as the speakers were perhaps less familiar with the Old Testament songs of praise. 46-48. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water ... which have received the Holy Ghost, &c.--Mark, he…Read the comment
