Context of Mark 4:40
38He was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we’re going to die?” 39He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Then he said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41And they were terrified and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

In the same boat, probably ill fitted to encounter a storm on the lake, they sailed. This would render their danger more imminent and the miracle more striking. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-41Verses 35-41 Christ was asleep in the storm, to try the faith of his disciples, and to stir them up to pray.
