Context of Jeremiah 50:34
32The arrogant will stumble and fall with no one to pick him up. I will set fire to his cities, and it will consume everything around him. 33This is what the Lord of Armies says: Israelites and Judeans alike have been oppressed. All their captors hold them fast; they refuse to release them. Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord of Armies is his name. He will fervently champion their cause so that he might bring rest to the earth but turmoil to those who live in Babylon. 35A sword is over the Chaldeans — this is the Lord’s declaration — against those who live in Babylon, against her officials, and against her sages. 36A sword is against the diviners, and they will act foolishly. A sword is against her heroic warriors, and they will be terrified.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 34Their Redeemer is strong - And it was not that he wanted power, and that Nebuchadnezzar had much, that Jerusalem was taken; but because the people had sinned, and would not return; and therefore national sins called for national punishments. These have taken place; and now the Lord of hosts shows them that the power of the Chaldeans is mere weakness against his might.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 34Redeemer - i. e., גאל gā'al Yahweh is Israel‘s next relative, bound by law to avenge him, as well as to ransom him from captivity. It was the Go‘el‘s duty also to plead his kinsman‘s cause. How thoroughly Yahweh will execute this duty for Israel is shown in the Hebrew by the triple repetition of the same word; literally “in pleading He will plead their plea.” The land - Rather, “the earth.” Babylon has hitherto by its ambition kept the world in unrest…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-46Verses 33-46 It is Israel's comfort in distress, that, though they are weak, their Redeemer is strong. This may be applied to believers, who complain of the dominion of sin and corruption, and of their own weakness and manifold infirmities. Their Redeemer is able to keep what they commit to him; and sin shall not have dominion over them. He will give them that rest which remains for the people of God. Also here is Babylon's sin, and their punishment. The…Read the comment
