Context of Isaiah 52:3
1“Wake up, wake up; put on your strength, Zion! Put on your beautiful garments, Jerusalem, the holy city! For the uncircumcised and the unclean will no longer enter you. 2Stand up, shake the dust off yourself! Take your seat, Jerusalem. Remove the bonds from your neck, captive Daughter Zion.” For this is what the Lord says: “You were sold for nothing, and you will be redeemed without silver.” 4For this is what the Lord God says: “At first my people went down to Egypt to reside there, then Assyria oppressed them without cause. 5So now what have I here” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “that my people are taken away for nothing? Its rulers wail” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “and my name is continually blasphemed all day long.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Ye have sold yourselves for nought - You became captives and prisoners without any price being paid for you. You cost nothing to those who made you prisoners. The idea is, that as they who had made them prisoners had done so without paying any price for them, it was equitable that they should be released in the same manner. When their captors had paid nothing for them, God would suffer nothing to be paid for them in turn; and they should be released, as…Read the comment

As you became your foes' servants, without their paying any price for you (Jr 15:13), so they shall release you without demanding any price or reward (Is 45:13), (where Cyrus is represented as doing so: a type of their final restoration gratuitously in like manner). So the spiritual Israel, "sold under sin," gratuitously (Ro 7:14), shall be redeemed also gratuitously (Is 55:1).Read the comment
