Context of Genesis 13:14
12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot lived in the cities on the plain and set up his tent near Sodom. 13(Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning immensely against the Lord.) After Lot had separated from him, the Lord said to Abram, “Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west, 15for I will give you and your offspring forever all the land that you see. 16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14The Lord said unto Abram - It is very likely that the angel of the covenant appeared to Abram in open day, when he could take a distinct view of the length and the breadth of this good land. The revelation made Genesis 15:5, was evidently made in the night; for then he was called to number the stars, which could not be seen but in the night season: here he is called on to number the dust of the earth, Genesis 13:16, which could not be seen but in the…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-18Verses 14-18 Those are best prepared for the visits of Divine grace, whose spirits are calm, and not ruffled with passion. God will abundantly make up in spiritual peace, what we lose for preserving neighbourly peace. When our relations are separated from us, yet God is not. Observe also the promises with which God now comforted and enriched Abram. Of two things he assures him; a good land, and a numerous issue to enjoy it. The prospects seen by faith are…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 14-1514-15. Lift up now thine eyes ... all the land which thou seest--So extensive a survey of the country, in all directions, can be obtained from no other point in the neighborhood; and those plains and hills, then lying desolate before the eyes of the solitary patriarch, were to be peopled with a mighty nation "like the dust of the earth in number," as they were in Solomon's time (1Ki 4:20).Read the comment
