Context of Psalms 106:31

29So they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them. 30But Phinehas stood and intervened, and the plague was restrained. It was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come. 32At the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them. 33For they rebelled against His Spirit, and Moses spoke rashly with his lips.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 31And that was counted unto him for righteousness - See Numbers 25:11-13. Compare the notes at Romans 4:3. The meaning here is, that this was regarded as a “proof” or “demonstration” that he was a righteous man - a man fearing God. Unto all generations for evermore - Hebrew, “To generation and generation forever.” The record would be transmitted from one generation to another, without any intermission, and would be permanent. This is one of the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-33Verses 13-33 Those that will not wait for God's counsel, shall justly be given up to their own hearts' lusts, to walk in their own counsels. An undue desire, even for lawful things, becomes sinful. God showed his displeasure for this. He filled them with uneasiness of mind, terror of conscience, and self-reproach. Many that fare deliciously every day, and whose bodies are healthful, have leanness in their souls: no love to God, no thankfulness, no…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30-33Phinehas killed an Israelite man who openly turned away from the Lord (Numbers 25:3–8). Because his action stopped the plague, the psalm credits him with righteousness. In this psalm he is presented as a stronger example of zeal for the Lord than Moses, who failed at Meribah (Numbers 20:11–13).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3131. counted ... righteousness--"a just and rewardable action." for--or, "unto," to the procuring of righteousness, as in Ro 4:2; 10:4. Here it was a particular act, not faith, nor its object Christ; and what was procured was not justifying righteousness, or what was to be rewarded with eternal life; for no one act of man's can be taken for complete obedience. But it was that which God approved and rewarded with a perpetual priesthood to him and his…Read the comment
