11“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My zeal. 12Declare, therefore, that I am granting him My covenant of peace. It will be a covenant of permanent priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.” 14The name of the Israelite who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. 15And the name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-15Verses 6-15 Phinehas, in the courage of zeal and faith, executed vengeance on Zimri and Cozbi. This act can never be an example for private revenge, or religious persecution, or for irregular public vengeance.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13The deaths of Zimri and Cozbi helped remove sin from the community of Israel. Their judgment stopped the spread of sin among the people. Phinehas’s action had atoning value. This means it helped turn away God’s judgment and restore the people’s relationship with him. His act brought cleansing and peace to Israel (see study note on Leviticus 1:4).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 11-1311-13.
