Context of Mark 10:34
32As they were going up the road to Jerusalem, Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. Again Jesus took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him: 33“Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles, who will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise again.” 35Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and declared, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.” 36“What do you want Me to do for you?” He inquired.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 32-34Verses 32-34 See the notes at Matthew 20:17-19. Mark 10:32 Jesus went before him - In the manner of an intrepid, fearless leader and guide, exposing “himself” to danger and death rather than his followers. And they rather amazed - They were afraid that evil would befall him in the city; that the scribes and Pharisees, who had so often sought to kill him, would then do it. Their fear and amazement were increased when he told them what would befall him…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-45Verses 32-45 Christ's going on with his undertaking for the salvation of mankind, was, is, and will be, the wonder of all his disciples. Worldly honour is a glittering thing, with which the eyes of Christ's own disciples have many times been dazzled. Our care must be, that we may have wisdom and grace to know how to suffer with him; and we may trust him to provide what the degrees of our glory shall be. Christ shows them that dominion was generally abused…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-34The disciples’ amazement and the people’s fear made them worried about what would happen next. The religious leaders in Jerusalem were already hostile toward Jesus (see 3:22–30; 7:1–13). Jesus took the disciples aside again and described the coming events in more detail than before (see also 8:31; 9:31). He knew what was about to happen. What awaited him in Jerusalem was not a tragedy or an accident, but part of God’s plan (see 8:31–33; Acts 4:27–28). As…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3434. And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again--Singularly explicit as this announcement was, Luke (Lu 18:34) says "they understood none of these things; and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken." The meaning of the words they could be at no loss to understand, but their import in relation to His Messianic kingdom they could not…Read the comment
