Context of Leviticus 1:8
6Next, he is to skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. 7The sons of Aaron the priest shall put a fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire. Then Aaron’s sons the priests are to arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat, atop the burning wood on the altar. 9The entrails and legs must be washed with water, and the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, a food offering, a pleasing aroma to the LORD. 10If, however, one’s offering is a burnt offering from the flock—from the sheep or goats—he is to present an unblemished male.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8The priests - shall lay the parts - The sacrifice was divided according to its larger joints. After its blood was poured out, and the skin removed, the head was cut off. They then opened it and took out the omentum, or caul, that invests the intestines. They took out the intestines with the mesentery, and washed them well, as also the fat. They then placed the four quarters upon the altar, covered them with the fat, laid the remains of the intestines upon…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 3-9Verses 3-9 In the due performance of the Levitical ordinances, the mysteries of the spiritual world are represented by corresponding natural objects; and future events are exhibited in these rites. Without this, the whole will seem unmeaning ceremonies. There is in these things a type of the sufferings of the Son of God, who was to be a sacrifice for the sins of the whole world? The burning body of an animal was but a faint representation of that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The Hebrew word for fat refers to the suet, or hard fat, around the kidneys and loins. This term appears only here and in Leviticus 1:12 and 8:20. All fat (not just this specific fat) belonged to God (3:14–17; 7:23–25; see 1 Samuel 2:15–17). The whole burnt offering was the only offering completely burned on the altar. For other offerings, they burned the fatty parts and some internal organs. The rest belonged to the officiating priests and sometimes the…Read the comment
