Context of Judges 5:4
2“When the princes take the lead in Israel, when the people volunteer, bless the LORD. 3Listen, O kings! Give ear, O princes! I will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel. O LORD, when You went out from Seir, when You marched from the land of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens poured out rain, and the clouds poured down water. 5The mountains quaked before the LORD, the One of Sinai, before the LORD, the God of Israel. 6In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were deserted and the travelers took the byways.

Commentaries on Judges 5:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4When thou wentest out of Seir - Here is an allusion to the giving of the law, and the manifestation of God's power and glory at that time; and as this was the most signal display of his majesty and mercy in behalf of their forefathers, Deborah very properly begins her song with a commemoration of this transaction.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4Compare Psalm 68:7-9, and Habakkuk 3:3-16. The three passages relate to the same events, and mutually explain each other. The subject of them is the triumphant march of Israel, with the Lord at their head, to take possession of Canaan, and the overthrow of Sihon, Og, and the Midianites. This march commenced from Kadesh, in the immediate neighborhood of Self, and the victories which followed were an exact parallel to the victory of Deborah and Barak…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-5In the poem, the Lord marches from his home in the mountains of Edom (compare Habakkuk 3:3) or Mount Sinai. One tradition places Sinai east of the Jordan Valley, in Edom (compare Galatians 4:25). The fire and earthquake that terrified Israel during the giving of the law (see Exodus 19:18) symbolize God's power and anger on the battlefield against his enemies. Torrential rain would have turned the ground into mud, making Sisera’s chariots a problem instead…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4-54-5. Allusion is here made, in general terms, to God's interposition on behalf of His people. Seir ... the field of Edom--represent the mountain range and plain extending along the south from the Dead Sea to the Elanitic Gulf. thou wentest out--indicates the storm to have proceeded from the south or southeast.Read the comment
