Context of Joshua 19:29
27then turned eastward toward Beth-dagon, touched Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah-el, and went north to Beth-emek and Neiel, passing Cabul on the left. 28It went on to Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, as far as Greater Sidon. The border then turned back toward Ramah as far as the fortified city of Tyre, turned toward Hosah, and came out at the Sea in the region of Achzib, 30Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob. There were twenty-two cities, along with their villages. 31This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Asher, including these cities and their villages.

Commentaries on Joshua 19:29
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29The strong city Tyre - I suspect this to be an improper translation. Perhaps the words of the original should be retained: And the coast turneth to Ramah and to the city, צר מבצר mibtsar tsor . Our translators have here left the Hebrew, and followed the Septuagint and Vulgate, a fault of which they are sometimes guilty. The former render the place ̔ , unto the fortified city of the Tyrians. The Vulgate is nearly the same: ad civitatem munitissimam Tyrum…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28-30Verses 28-30 These verses refer to the northern portion of the territory of Asher, on the Phoenician frontier. Some names may have dropped out of the text, the number Joshua 19:30 not tallying with the catalogue. Ramah still retains its ancient name, and lies about twelve miles southeast of Tyre. Achzib is the modern “Zib,” on the coast, eight or nine miles north of Acre.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-51Verses 17-51 Joshua waited till all the tribes were settled, before he asked any provision for himself. He was content to be unfixed, till he saw them all placed, and herein is an example to all in public places, to prefer the common welfare before private advantage. Those who labour most to do good to others, seek an inheritance in the Canaan above: but it will be soon enough to enter thereon, when they have done all the service to their brethren of…Read the comment

To the north, the Phoenician cities of Tyre and Sidon restricted Asher's growth.Read the comment
