Context of 2 Samuel 5:11
9So David took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built it up all the way around, from the supporting terraces inward. 10And David became greater and greater, for the LORD God of Hosts was with him. Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. 12And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel. 13After he had arrived from Hebron, David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Hiram king of Tyre - He was a very friendly man, and no doubt a believer in the true God. He was not only a friend to David, but also of his son Solomon, to whom, in building the temple, he afforded the most important assistance.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-16Verses 11-16 David's house was not the worse, nor the less fit to be dedicated to God, for being built by the sons of the stranger. It is prophesied of the gospel church, The sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee, Is 60:10. David's government was rooted and built up. David was established king; so is the Son of David, and all who, through him, are made to our God kings and priests. Never had the nation of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11Hiram king of Tyre: Although the meeting of these two neighboring kings is reported just after Jerusalem’s conquest, it probably happened much later. Another tradition suggests Hiram became king of Tyre just eight years before Solomon became king of Israel. This same king later did a similar favor for Solomon (1 Kings…Read the comment
