Context of Hosea 2:19
17For I will remove from her lips the names of the Baals; no longer will their names be invoked. 18On that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the creatures that crawl on the ground. And I will abolish bow and sword and battle in the land, and will make them lie down in safety. So I will betroth you to Me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in loving devotion and compassion. 20And I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will know the LORD.” 21“On that day I will respond—” declares the LORD— “I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth.

Commentaries on Hosea 2:19
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19I will betroth thee unto me - The people are always considered under the emblem of a wife unfaithful to her husband. In righteousness - According to law, reason, and equity. In judgment - According to what is fit and becoming. In lovingkindness - Having the utmost affection and love for thee. In mercies - Forgiving and blotting out all past miscarriages. Or there may be an allusion here to the dowry given by the husband to his wife: "I will give…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-23Verses 14-23 After these judgments the Lord would deal with Israel more gently. By the promise of rest in Christ we are invited to take his yoke upon us; and the work of conversion may be forwarded by comforts as well as by convictions. But usually the Lord drives us to despair of earthly joy, and help from ourselves, that, being shut from every other door, we may knock at Mercy's gate. From that time Israel would be more truly attached to the Lord; no…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20I will betroth you: This Hebrew verb, used three times in these verses, can be translated with the word betroth. The Lord promised to betroth Israel to himself forever. To ensure this eternal marriage, God provided a bride price with five priceless qualities: Righteousness…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 19-2019-20. "Betroth" is thrice repeated, implying the intense love of God to His people; and perhaps, also, the three Persons of the Triune God, severally engaging to make good the betrothal. The marriage covenant will be as it were renewed from the beginning, on a different footing; not for a time only, as before, through the apostasy of the people, but "forever" through the grace of God writing the law on their hearts by the Spirit of Messiah (Jr 31:31-37)…Read the comment
