Context of Haggai 2:19
17I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew, and hail, but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD. 18Consider carefully from this day forward—from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid—consider carefully: Is there still seed in the barn? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will bless you.” 20For the second time that day, the twenty-fourth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to Haggai, saying, 21“Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am about to shake the heavens and the earth:

Commentaries on Haggai 2:19
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-19Verses 10-19 Many spoiled this good work, by going about it with unholy hearts and hands, and were likely to gain no advantage by it. The sum of these two rules of the law is, that sin is more easily learned from others than holiness. The impurity of their hearts and lives shall make the work of their hands, and all their offerings, unclean before God. The case is the same with us. When employed in any good work, we should watch over ourselves, lest we…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19Is there still seed in the barn?: This promise of a plentiful harvest highlights God's faithfulness to his covenant people. The temple was not yet finished, but God promised to extend its blessings immediately. But from this day on, I will bless you: God graciously responded right away to his people's efforts toward spiritual renewal and obedience (see Psalm 111:4–5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. Is the seed yet in the barn?--implying, It is not. It has been already sown this month, and there are no more signs of its bearing a good crop, much less of its being safely stored in the barn, than there were in the past season, when there was such a failure; yet I promise to you from this day (emphatically marking by the repetition the connection of the blessing with the day of their obedience) a blessing in an abundant harvest. So also the vine…Read the comment
