Context of Genesis 11:10

8So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9That is why it is called Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth. This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad. 11And after he had become the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters. 12When Arphaxad was 35 years old, he became the father of Shelah.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10These are the generations of Shem - This may he called the holy family, as from it sprang Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the twelve patriarchs, David, Solomon, and all the great progenitors of the Messiah. We have already seen that the Scripture chronology, as it exists in the Hebrew text, the Samaritan, the Septuagint, Josephus, and some of the fathers, is greatly embarrassed; and it is yet much more so in the various systems of learned and unlearned…Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-26Verses 10-26 Here is a genealogy, or list of names, ending in Abram, the friend of God, and thus leading towards Christ, the promised Seed, who was the son of Abram. Nothing is left upon record but their names and ages; the Holy Ghost seeming to hasten through them to the history of Abram. How little do we know of those that are gone before us in this world, even of those that lived in the same places where we live, as we likewise know little of those who…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10This account of Shem continues from 10:21–32, focusing on the family line leading to Abram. Only Abram and Israel inherit Shem’s God (see 9:26–27; Deuteronomy 32:8–9). The Babel story strongly rejects the culture that God called Abram to abandon (Genesis 12:1; 24:6–7). Together with the account of Terah’s descendants (11:27–32), this account of Shem’s line forms a bridge from the universal history of chapters 1–11 to Israel's national history that begins…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-321. the whole earth was of one language. The descendants of Noah, united by the strong bond of a common language, had not separated, and notwithstanding the divine command to replenish the earth, were unwilling to separate. The more pious and well-disposed would of course obey the divine will; but a numerous body, seemingly the aggressive horde mentioned (Ge 10:10), determined to please themselves by occupying the fairest region they came to.Read the comment
