Context of Ezekiel 18:9
7He does not oppress another, but restores the pledge to the debtor. He does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing. 8He does not engage in usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between men. He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances. That man is righteous; surely he will live, declares the Lord GOD. 10Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things, 11though the father has done none of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain and defiles his neighbor’s wife.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Live die - In the writings of Ezekiel there is a development of the meaning of “life” and “death.” In the holy land the sanctions of divine government were in great degree temporal; so that the promise of “life” for “obedience,” the threatening of “death” for “disobedience,” in the Books of Moses, were regarded simply as temporal and national. In their exile this could not continue in its full extent, and the universality of the misfortune…Read the comment
