Context of 2 Chronicles 16:9
7At that time Hanani the seer came to King Asa of Judah and told him, “Because you have relied on the king of Aram and not on the LORD your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. 8Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast army with many chariots and horsemen? Yet because you relied on the LORD, He delivered them into your hand. For the eyes of the LORD roam to and fro over all the earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are fully devoted to Him. You have acted foolishly in this matter. From now on, therefore, you will be at war.” 10Asa was angry with the seer and became so enraged over this matter that he put the man in prison. And at the same time Asa oppressed some of the people. 11Now the acts of Asa, from beginning to end, are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-9Hanani the seer told Asa he would face war from then on because he disobeyed. This judgment contrasted with Asa’s earlier victory over Zerah, when he trusted in the Lord despite the odds (2 Chronicles 14:9–13). Asa's earlier trust in the Lord brought peace to the land (2 Chronicles 14:5), but now his reliance on military power would lead to ongoing warfare.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 7-107-10. Hanani the seer came to Asa ... and said--His object was to show the king his error in forming his recent league with Ben-hadad. He added, that in consequence of this want of faith, Asa had lost the opportunity of gaining a victory over the united forces of…Read the comment
