Context of Mark 13:7
5And Jesus began to say unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray. 6Many shall come in my name, saying, I am he; and shall lead many astray. And when ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be not troubled: these things must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet. 8For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there shall be earthquakes in divers places; there shall be famines: these things are the beginning of travail. 9But take ye heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in synagogues shall ye be beaten; and before governors and kings shall ye stand for my sake, for a testimony unto them.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences. When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to ourselves. And the disciples of Christ, if it be not their own fault, may enjoy holy security and peace of mind, when all around is in disorder. But they must take heed that they are not drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings they…Read the comment

In both places, the word emphasizes God’s control and authority over events. but the end is still to come: These events would happen before Jerusalem’s destruction. Jesus compared them to birth pains, which come before childbirth. In the same way, these troubles would come before God’s judgment on Jerusalem. However, they did not mean that the destruction would happen at once.Read the comment
