Context of Acts 9:39
37And it came to pass in those days, that she fell sick, and died: and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper chamber. 38And as Lydda was nigh unto Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men unto him, entreating him, Delay not to come on unto us. And Peter arose and went with them. And when he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. 40But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning to the body, he said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes; and when she saw Peter, she sat up. 41And he gave her his hand, and raised her up; and calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-43Verses 36-43 Many are full of good words, who are empty and barren in good works; but Tabitha was a great doer, no great talker. Christians who have not property to give in charity, may yet be able to do acts of charity, working with their hands, or walking with their feet, for the good of others. Those are certainly best praised whose own works praise them, whether the words of others do so or not. But such are ungrateful indeed, who have kindness shown…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-43These verses describe Peter’s traveling ministry in Judea, especially in towns along the seacoast. As he traveled, God gave him power to do miracles. Peter healed a man named Aeneas and raised a woman named Dorcas from the dead. Jesus had promised that his disciples would do such works (John 14:12). Luke often tells stories in pairs. For example, he tells of a man being healed and then a woman being healed (see Luke 13:10–17; 14:1–6). In this passage…Read the comment
