Context of Psalms 30:5
3O Lord, You have brought my life up from Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead); You have kept me alive, so that I would not go down to the pit (grave). 4Sing to the Lord, O you His godly ones, And give thanks at the mention of His holy name. For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may endure for a night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning. 6As for me, in my prosperity I said, “I shall never be moved.” 7By Your favor and grace, O Lord, you have made my mountain stand strong; You hid Your face, and I was horrified.

Commentaries on Psalms 30:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5For his anger endureth but a moment - There is an elegant abruptness in these words in the Hebrew text. This is the literal translation: "For a moment in his anger. Lives in his favor. In the evening weeping may lodge: but in the morning exultation." So good is God, that he cannot delight in either the depression or ruin of his creatures. When he afflicts, it is for our advantage, that we may be partakers of his holiness, and be not condemned with the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5For his anger endureth but a moment - Margin: There is but “a moment in his anger.” So the Hebrew. That is, his anger endures but a short time, or brief period. The reference here is to the troubles and sorrows through which the psalmist had passed, as compared with his subsequent happiness. Though at the time they might have seemed to be long, yet, as compared with the many mercies of life, with the joy which had succeeded them, and with the hopes now…Read the comment
