Context of Judges 11:5
3Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob; and worthless and unprincipled men gathered around Jephthah, and went out [on raids] with him. 4Now it happened after a while that the Ammonites fought against Israel. When the Ammonites fought against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob; 6and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, so that we may fight against the Ammonites.” 7But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and drive me from the house of my father? Why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?”

Commentaries on Judges 11:5
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6These elders were different from Jephthah’s brothers, although Jephthah’s initial response (Judges 11:7) seems to treat them as the same group. They had promised (Judges 10:18) that whoever led the attack against the Ammonites would become the ruler. Here, in typical Middle Eastern bargaining style, they only offered the position of commander, trying to reduce their initial promise.Read the comment
