Context of Job 14:12
10But [the brave, strong] man must die and lie face down; Man breathes his last, and where is he? 11As water evaporates from the sea, And a river drains and dries up, So man lies down and does not rise [again]. Until the heavens are no longer, The dead will not awake nor be raised from their sleep. 13“Oh, that You would hide me in Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead), That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past, That You would set a definite time and then remember me [and in Your lovingkindness imprint me on your heart]! 14If a man dies, will he live again? I will wait all the days of my struggle Until my change and release will come.

Commentaries on Job 14:12
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12So man lieth down - He falls asleep in his bed of earth. And riseth not - Men shall not, like cut down trees and plants, reproduce their like; nor shall they arise till the heavens are no more, till the earth and all its works are burnt up, and the general resurrection of human beings shall take place. Surely it would be difficult to twist this passage to the denial of the resurrection of the body. Neither can these expressions be fairly understood as…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12So man lieth down, and riseth not - He lies down in the grave and does not rise again on the earth. Till the heavens be no more - That is, never; for such is the fair interpretation of the passage, and this accords with its design. Job means to say, undoubtedly, that man would never appear again in the land of the living; that he would not spring up from the grave, as a sprout does from a fallen tree; and that when he dies, he goes away from the earth…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-15Verses 7-15 Though a tree is cut down, yet, in a moist situation, shoots come forth, and grow up as a newly planted tree. But when man is cut off by death, he is for ever removed from his place in this world. The life of man may fitly be compared to the waters of a land flood, which spread far, but soon dry up. All Job's expressions here show his belief in the great doctrine of the resurrection. Job's friends proving miserable comforters, he pleases…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12does not rise: Job did not have even the minimal evidence of resurrection found in the Old Testament (2 Kings 13:21; Isaiah 26:19; Daniel 12:2; see also Job 19:25). Job was not focusing on the end of the universe when the heavens will disappear (Psalm 102:25–26; Isaiah 34:4; 51:6; Hebrews 1:10–12). He was referring to the eternal nature of the heavens (Psalm 148:6; see also Psalms 72:5, 7, 17; 89:29, 37). His phrase refers to the permanent state of death.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1212. heavens be no more--This only implies that Job had no hope of living again in the present order of the world, not that he had no hope of life again in a new order of things. Psa 102:26 proves that early under the Old Testament the dissolution of the present earth and heavens was expected (compare Ge 8:22). Enoch before Job had implied that the "saints shall live again" (Jude 14; He 11:13-16). Even if, by this phrase, Job meant "never" (Psa 89:29) in…Read the comment
