Isaiah 6:13
13And though a tenth [of the people] remain in the land, It will again be subject to destruction [consumed and burned], Like a massive terebinth tree or like an oak Whose stump remains when it is chopped down. The holy seed [the elect remnant] is its stump [the substance of Israel].”

Context of Isaiah 6:13
11Then I said, “Lord, how long?” And He answered, “Until cities are devastated and without inhabitant, And houses are without people And the land is utterly desolate, 12The Lord has removed [His] people far away, And there are many deserted places in the midst of the land. And though a tenth [of the people] remain in the land, It will again be subject to destruction [consumed and burned], Like a massive terebinth tree or like an oak Whose stump remains when it is chopped down. The holy seed [the elect remnant] is its stump [the substance of Israel].”

Commentaries on Isaiah 6:13
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13A tenth - This passage, though somewhat obscure, and variously explained by various interpreters, has, I think, been made so clear by the accomplishment of the prophecy, that there remains little room to doubt of the sense of it. When Nebuchadnezzar had carried away the greater and better part of the people into captivity, there was yet a tenth remaining in the land, the poorer sort left to be vinedressers and husbandmen, under Gedaliah, 2 Kings 25:12, 2…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13But yet - The main idea in this verse is plain, though there is much difficulty in the explanation of the particular phrases. The leading thought is, that the land should not be “utterly” and finally abandoned. There would be the remains of life - as in an oak or terebinth tree when the tree has fallen; compare the notes at Isaiah 11:1. A tenth - That is, a tenth of the inhabitants, or a very small part. Amidst the general desolation, a small part…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 God sends Isaiah to foretell the ruin of his people. Many hear the sound of God's word, but do not feel the power of it. God sometimes, in righteous judgment, gives men up to blindness of mind, because they will not receive the truth in the love of it. But no humble inquirer after Christ, need to fear this awful doom, which is a spiritual judgment on those who will still hold fast their sins. Let every one pray for the enlightening of the Holy…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13Even if a tenth, a remnant, survives, the judgment would continue until almost all are destroyed. Isaiah often spoke about near destruction or decimation (almost complete destruction; Isaiah 9:18–21; 10:20; 22:4; 48:19; 51:18). But Isaiah also kept hope alive. A remnant would survive and begin again (7:21–22; 29:23; 37:31; 44:26; 49:19; 54:1). the holy seed will be a stump in the land: The stump is like the base of a tree that remains after it is cut…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. and it shall return, and ... be eaten--Rather, "but it shall be again given over to be consumed": if even a tenth survive the first destruction, it shall be destroyed by a second (Is 5:25; Eze 5:1-5, 12), [Maurer and Horsley]. In English Version, "return" refers to the poor remnant left in the land at the Babylonish captivity (2Ki 24:14; 25:12), which afterwards fled to Egypt in fear (2Ki 25:26), and subsequently returned thence along with others who…Read the comment
