Context of Isaiah 38:11
9This is the writing of Hezekiah king of Judah after he had been sick and had recovered from his illness: 10I said, “In mid-life I am to go through the gates of Sheol (the place of the dead), I am to be summoned, deprived of the remainder of my years.” I said, “I will not see the Lord, The Lord in the land of the living; I will no longer see man among the inhabitants of the world. 12My dwelling (body) is pulled up and removed from me like a shepherd’s tent; I have rolled up my life as a weaver [rolls up the finished web]. He cuts me free from the warp [of the loom]; From day to night You bring me to an end. 13I lay down until morning. Like a lion, so He breaks all my bones; From day until night You bring me to an end.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11The Lord "Jehovah" - יה Yah, יה Yah, seems to be יהוה Yehovah, in MS. Bodl., and it was so at first written in another. So the Syriac. See Houbigant. I believe יהוה Yehovah was the original reading. See the note on Isaiah 12:2; (note).Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11I shall not see the Lord - In the original, the Hebrew which is rendered Lord,‘ is not Yahweh, but יה יה yâhh yâhh On the meaning of it, see the note at Isaiah 12:2 (compare the note at Isaiah 7:14). The repetition of the name here denotes emphasis or intensity of feeling - the deep desire which he had to see Yahweh in the land of the living, and the intense sorrow of his heart at the idea of being cut off from that privilege. The idea here is, that…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-22Verses 9-22 We have here Hezekiah's thanksgiving. It is well for us to remember the mercies we receive in sickness. Hezekiah records the condition he was in. He dwells upon this; I shall no more see the Lord. A good man wishes not to live for any other end than that he may serve God, and have communion with him. Our present residence is like that of a shepherd in his hut, a poor, mean, and cold lodging, and with a trust committed to our charge, as the…Read the comment
