Context of Isaiah 37:30
28But I know your sitting down And your going out and your coming in [every detail of your life], And your raging against Me. 29Because your raging against Me And your arrogance has come up to My ears, I will put My hook in your nose And My bridle in your mouth, And I will turn you back by the way you came. “This shall be the sign [of these things] to you [Hezekiah]: you are to eat this year what grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from the same, and in the third year you are to sow and harvest, and plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 31The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 32For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant and from Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.” ’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 30And this shall be a sign unto thee - It is evident that the discourse here is turned from Sennacherib to Hezekiah. Such transitions, without distinctly indicating them, are common in Isaiah. God had in the previous verses, in the form of a direct personal address, foretold the defeat of Sennacherib, and thc confusion of his plans. He here turns and gives to Hezekiah the assurance that Jerusalem would be delivered. On the meaning of the word sign,‘ see the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30This year … the second year … the third year: Due to the Assyrian siege and its impact on farming, the people of Judah could not plant and harvest as usual. The promise that life would return to normal after the siege reassured them that God was with them and would provide for their daily needs. They needed to build their trust in God over three years, believing that God's word would come true (see Isaiah 30:15, 18). The idea was that after escaping the…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3030. Addressed to Hezekiah. sign--a token which, when fulfilled, would assure him of the truth of the whole prophecy as to the enemy's overthrow. The two years, in which they were sustained by the spontaneous growth of the earth, were the two in which Judea had been already ravaged by Sennacherib (Is 32:10). Thus translate: "Ye did eat (the first year) such as groweth of itself, and in the second year that ... but in this third year sow ye," &c., for in…Read the comment
