Context of Isaiah 37:30
28"'I know your sitting down and your going out and coming in, and your raging against me. 29Because you have raged against me and your complacency has come to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will turn you back on the way by which you came.' "And this shall be the sign for you: this year you shall eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs from that. Then in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 32For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Commentaries on Isaiah 37:30
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 30And this shall be a sign unto thee - It is evident that the discourse here is turned from Sennacherib to Hezekiah. Such transitions, without distinctly indicating them, are common in Isaiah. God had in the previous verses, in the form of a direct personal address, foretold the defeat of Sennacherib, and thc confusion of his plans. He here turns and gives to Hezekiah the assurance that Jerusalem would be delivered. On the meaning of the word sign,‘ see the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 30This year … the second year … the third year: Due to the Assyrian siege and its impact on farming, the people of Judah could not plant and harvest as usual. The promise that life would return to normal after the siege reassured them that God was with them and would provide for their daily needs. They needed to build their trust in God over three years, believing that God's word would come true (see Isaiah 30:15, 18). The idea was that after escaping the…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3030. Addressed to Hezekiah. sign--a token which, when fulfilled, would assure him of the truth of the whole prophecy as to the enemy's overthrow. The two years, in which they were sustained by the spontaneous growth of the earth, were the two in which Judea had been already ravaged by Sennacherib (Is 32:10). Thus translate: "Ye did eat (the first year) such as groweth of itself, and in the second year that ... but in this third year sow ye," &c., for in…Read the comment
