Context of Hosea 14:2
1O Israel, return [in repentance] to the Lord your God, For you have stumbled and fallen [visited by tragedy], because of your sin. Take the words [confessing your guilt] with you and return to the Lord. Say to Him, “Take away all our wickedness; Accept what is good and receive us graciously, So that we may present the fruit of our lips (gratitude). 3Assyria will not save us; We will not ride on horses [relying on military might], Nor will we say again to [the idols who are] the work of our hands, ‘You are our gods.’ For in You [O Lord] the orphan finds love and compassion and mercy.” 4I will heal their apostasy and faithlessness; I will love them freely, For My anger has turned away from Israel.

Commentaries on Hosea 14:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2Take with you words - And you may be assured that you pray aright, when you use the words which God himself has put in your mouths. On this very ground there is a potency in the Lord's Prayer, when offered up believingly, beyond what can be found in any human composition. And it may be presumed that it was this consideration that induced our reformers to introduce it so frequently in the public liturgy. See the order of God's directions here: - Hearing…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Take with you words - He bills them not bring costly offerings, that they might regain His favor; not whole burnt-offerings of bullocks, goats or rams; with which, and with which alone, they had before gone to seek Him (see the note above at Hosea 5:6); not the silver and gold which they had lavished on their idols; but what seems the cheapest of all, which any may have, without cost to their substance; “words;” worthless, as mere words; precious when…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3Hosea created a prayer of confession to guide his people back to the Lord. God’s prophets felt both God's anger over Israel’s rebellion and the people's suffering (see also Daniel 9:4–19). Take away all our iniquity: The Israelites should rely on God’s mercy and grace, openly admitting their many sins. that we may present the fruit of our lips: Israel often offered animal sacrifices for sin, but the Lord made it clear that sacrifices were not the answer…Read the comment

"Words," in Hebrew, mean "realities," there being the same term for "words" and "things"; so God implies, He will not accept empty professions (Psa 78:36; Is 29:13). He does not ask costly sacrifices, but words of heartfelt penitence. receive us graciously--literally "(for) good." calves of our lips--that is, instead of sacrifices of calves, which…Read the comment
