Context of Hebrews 6:5
3And we will do this [that is, proceed to maturity], if God permits. 4For [it is impossible to restore to repentance] those who have once been enlightened [spiritually] and who have tasted and consciously experienced the heavenly gift and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted and consciously experienced the good word of God and the powers of the age (world) to come, 6and then have fallen away—it is impossible to bring them back again to repentance, since they again nail the Son of God on the cross [for as far as they are concerned, they are treating the death of Christ as if they were not saved by it], and are holding Him up again to public disgrace. 7For soil that drinks the rain which often falls on it and produces crops useful to those for whose benefit it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God;

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5And have tasted the good word of God - Have had this proof of the excellence of the promise of God in sending the Gospel, the Gospel being itself the good word of a good God, the reading and preaching of which they find sweet to the taste of their souls. Genuine believers have an appetite for the word of God; they taste it, and then their relish for it is the more abundantly increased. The more they get, the more they wish to have. The powers of the world…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5And have tasted the good word of God - That is, either the doctrines which he teaches, and which are good, or pleasant to the soul; or the Word of God which is connected with good, that is, which promises good. The former seems to me to be the correct meaning - that the Word of God, or the truth which he taught, was itself a good. It was what the soul desired, and in which it found comfort and peace; compare Psalm 119:103; Psalm 141:6. The meaning here…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5who have tasted the goodness of the word of God: These people heard God's word preached (Hebrews 2:3–4; 4:1–2) and saw its impact. the powers of the coming age: They witnessed signs and wonders when they heard the good news (2:4; compare Exodus 7:3–4; Deuteronomy 7:19; Psalms 66:3; 77:15–20; 78:9–16; 1 Corinthians 10:1–13).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. tasted the good word of God--distinct from "tasted OF (genitive) the heavenly gift"; we do not yet enjoy all the fulness of Christ, but only have a taste OF Him, the heavenly gift now; but believers may taste the whole word (accusative case) of God already, namely, God's "good word of promise." The Old Testament promise of Canaan to Israel typified "the good word of God's" promise of the heavenly rest (He 4:1-16). Therefore, there immediately follows…Read the comment
