Context of Ezekiel 42:16

14When the priests enter [the Holy Place], they shall not go out from the sanctuary into the outer court unless they lay there their garments in which they minister, for these are holy (set apart). They shall put on other garments before they approach that which is for the people.” 15Now when he had finished measuring the inner temple, he brought me out toward the gate which faced east and measured the outer area all around. He measured the east side with the measuring rod, five hundred rods by the measuring rod. 17He measured the north side, five hundred rods by the measuring rod. 18He measured the south side, five hundred rods by the measuring rod.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16He measured the east - north - south - west side - Each of which was five hundred reeds: and, as the building was square, the area must have been nearly thirteen thousand paces. No wonder this was called a city. See Ezekiel 40:2.Read the comment

Measured it round about - The precincts, into which he had brought the seer through the eastern gate of the outer court.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-20After finishing his tour of the inner courtyard, Ezekiel saw the overall dimensions of the area. The entire complex was square, symbolizing holiness. This shape set it apart from Solomon's Temple and the tabernacle, where only the Most Holy Place was square. The description of the temple ends where it started, mentioning a wall surrounding it (see Ezekiel 40:5). Ezekiel reminds us that the wall's purpose was to separate the holy from the common.Read the comment

Fairbairn rightly supports English Version, which agrees with the Hebrew. The vast extent is another…Read the comment
