Context of Ezekiel 27:35
33When your wares went out to the sea, You met the desire, and the demand, and the necessities of many people; You enriched the kings of the earth With your abundant wealth and merchandise. 34Now you are shattered by the seas In the depths of the waters; Your merchandise and all your crew Have gone down with you. All the inhabitants of the coastlands Are aghast and appalled at you, And their kings are horribly frightened and shudder; Their faces twitch and pale. 36The merchants among the people hiss at you [with malicious joy]; You have become a horror and a source of terrors. You will cease to be forever.’ ” ’ ”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-36Verses 26-36 The most mighty and magnificent kingdoms and states, sooner or later, come down. Those who make creatures their confidence, and rest their hopes upon them, will fall with them: happy are those who have the God of Jacob for their Help, and whose hope is in the Lord their God, who lives for ever. Those who engage in trade should learn to conduct their business according to God's word. Those who possess wealth should remember they are the Lord's…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-36The second part of the prophet’s message to Tyre (see study note on Ezekiel 26:1–28:19) is a funeral song. The song compares Tyre’s past glory with its present loss. It connects with the previous chapter in several ways. Both speak directly to Tyre. Both describe Tyre as a gateway and a center of trade (see Ezekiel 26:1–2). Both end with the same message: Tyre has come to a terrible end and will exist no more (compare Ezekiel 26:21).Read the comment
