Context of 2 Samuel 8:7
5When the Arameans (Syrians) of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David struck down 22,000 Arameans. 6Then David put garrisons among the Arameans in Damascus, and the Arameans became his servants and brought tribute. The Lord helped David wherever he went. David took the shields of gold that were carried by the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 8And from Betah and Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took an immense quantity of bronze. 9When Toi king of Hamath heard about David’s defeat of all the forces of Hadadezer,

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 8:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7David took the shields of gold - We know not what these were. Some translate arms, others quivers, others bracelets, others collars, and others shields. They were probably costly ornaments by which the Syrian soldiers were decked and distinguished. And those who are called servants here, were probably the choice troops or body-guard of Hadadezer, as the argyraspides were of Alexander the Great. See Quintus Curtius.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7gold shields: See 2 Kings 11:10. brought … to Jerusalem: David brought these valuable items to Jerusalem and dedicated them to God. He did this in keeping with God’s instructions for a faithful king, which warned against storing up wealth for personal glory (Deuteronomy 17:17). Instead of keeping the gold for himself, David set it apart for God’s use (see 2 Samuel 8:11).Read the comment
