Context of 2 Samuel 8:7
5The Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, but David killed 22,000 of the Arameans. 6David placed garrisons in the territory of the Arameans of Damascus; the Arameans became David’s subjects and brought tribute. The Lord protected David wherever he campaigned. David took the golden shields that belonged to Hadadezer’s servants and brought them to Jerusalem. 8From Tebah and Berothai, Hadadezer’s cities, King David took a great deal of bronze. 9When King Toi of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 8:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7David took the shields of gold - We know not what these were. Some translate arms, others quivers, others bracelets, others collars, and others shields. They were probably costly ornaments by which the Syrian soldiers were decked and distinguished. And those who are called servants here, were probably the choice troops or body-guard of Hadadezer, as the argyraspides were of Alexander the Great. See Quintus Curtius.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7gold shields: See 2 Kings 11:10. brought … to Jerusalem: David brought these valuable items to Jerusalem and dedicated them to God. He did this in keeping with God’s instructions for a faithful king, which warned against storing up wealth for personal glory (Deuteronomy 17:17). Instead of keeping the gold for himself, David set it apart for God’s use (see 2 Samuel 8:11).Read the comment
