The Lord Jesus assures us by asking, “Who can bring a charge against God’s elect?” [Romans 8:33.] It is Christ that died to atone for our sins, to become our surety. No one of the host of Satan can pass condemnation upon a child of God who believes in Him as his personal Saviour, because God justifies him.11LtMs, Lt 98d, 1896, par. 6
No power of evil angels can separate you from Christ if you believe and trust in Him as your Sin-bearer, for He identifies His interest with you. He will carry your individual sorrows. He says, Bring them all to Me, I will carry them for you. He holds out to you the strongest consolation. He challenges the whole force of Satan’s accusing power, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” [Verse 35.] He loves His children as Himself, and the Father loves all who believe in Jesus as He loves His Son. They are as Himself, for their life is hid with Christ in God.Romans 8:34

SC 74.1
As they met together after the ascension they were eager to present their requests to the Father in the name of Jesus. In solemn awe they bowed in prayer, repeating the assurance, “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in My name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:23, 24. They extended the hand of faith higher and higher with the mighty argument, “It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Romans 8:34. And Pentecost brought them the presence of the Comforter, of whom Christ had said, He “shall be in you.” And He had further said, “It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.” John 14:17; 16:7. Henceforth through the Spirit, Christ was to abide continually in the hearts of His children. Their union with Him was closer than when He was personally with them. The light, and love, and power of the indwelling Christ shone out through them, so that men, beholding, “marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8

We may claim the blessed assurance, “I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions” (Isaiah 44:22). Thy “sins, which are many, are forgiven” (Luke 7:47). O how precious, how refreshing, is the sunlight of God’s love! The sinner may look upon his sin-stained life, and say, “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died” (Romans 8:34). “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound” (Romans 5:20). Christ the Restorer plants a new principle of life in the soul, and that plant grows and produces fruit. The grace of Christ purifies while it pardons, and fits men for a holy heaven. We are to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ until we reach the full stature of men and women in Christ. O that we might all reach the high standard which God has set before us, and no longer remain dwarfs in the religious life! What beams of light would be reflected to the world in good works if we should become light bearers such as God would have us! 32The Review and Herald, July 14, 1891.The Acts of the Apostles

In obedience to Christ’s command, they waited in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father—the outpouring of the Spirit. They did not wait in idleness. They knew that they had a Representative in heaven, an Advocate at the throne of God. In solemn awe they bowed in prayer, repeating the assurance, “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in My name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:23, 24. But Jesus alone is my dependence. In Him I trust. He loveth even me. He is at this moment standing at the altar of incense presenting before the Father my prayers, my heart-longing desires for His grace, His heavenly endowment, that I may through the grace given unto me reveal to others His great love and complete efficiency. I grasp the promises of Him who hath given His life for the world that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life. “Then who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Romans 8:34. This we can plead. This is an argument Satan cannot overcome. Then we will, in His name and through His grace, sanctify ourselves—soul and body and spirit—that our words and our works shall be wrought in God, and that we may have an influence over others that will win them to Jesus Christ.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Looking upon the great antitype, we can say, “It is Christ that died; yea rather, that is risen again; who is even at the right hand of God; who also maketh intercession for us.” [Romans 8:34.] The Sun of Righteousness shines into our hearts to give the knowledge of the glory of Jesus Christ. Of the Holy Spirit’s office He says, “He shall glorify Me; for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you.” [John 16:14.] The Psalmist prays, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. ... Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me by Thy free Spirit. Then will I teach transgressors Thy way, and sinners will be converted unto Thee.” [Psalm 51:7, 10-13.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

“It is Christ that died” is an argument that cannot be refuted. [Romans 8:34.] To it nothing can be added. To the repentant soul it is Yea and Amen. Christ leads the penitent soul upward step by step and gives to the mind His peace. “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” [1 John 1:9.] Angels of God guard the penitent, believing soul, that evil angels may not intrude.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

How can the sinner be redeemed? When the conscience has been awakened to a sense of an intolerable burden of guilt, what will give a hope that outweighs all discouragement and despair? “It is Christ that died.” [Romans 8:34.] O price above all price! Rejoice, sinful one, sin is not infinite. However aggravated its character, however oppressive the guilt of conscience, there is blessed hope. “Though your sins be as scarlet,” repentant one, despair not. “They shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” [Isaiah 1:18.] “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” [1 John 1:9.]Jesus, Name Above All Names

When Satan comes in with his suggestions, look unto Jesus and say, “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ who died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us” (Romans 8:34). Only think of this, my sister. Christ is the one who has died for you, who has purchased you with His own precious blood. Will He permit those whom He values so highly to walk alone? Nay, He will not. The apostle continues, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation?” (Romans 8:35). Nay. Jesus bore all this in my behalf when He accepted humanity, and He bore it in order that I might not perish, but have everlasting life. Will He who has done all this for you be indifferent to you when it is difficult for you to engage in the warfare and to fight the good fight of faith? You are weak, and the trembling hand of faith can scarcely grasp the promises, but cannot you now say, “Lord, I am now too weak to use the weapons of warfare, but I can repose in Thee as my only hope. In Thee, and in Thee alone, my Redeemer, is my only hope of eternal life. Thou art my refuge.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

What a change was wrought in the hearts of the disciples as they looked once more on the loved countenance of their Master! Luke 24:32. In a more complete and perfect sense than ever before they had “found Him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write.” The uncertainty, the anguish, the despair, gave place to perfect assurance, to unclouded faith. What marvel that after His ascension they “were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.” The people, knowing only of the Saviour’s ignominious death, looked to see in their faces the expression of sorrow, confusion, and defeat; but they saw there gladness and triumph. What a preparation these disciples had received for the work before them! They had passed through the deepest trial which it was possible for them to experience, and had seen how, when to human vision all was lost, the word of God had been triumphantly accomplished. Henceforward what could daunt their faith or chill the ardor of their love? In the keenest sorrow they had “strong consolation,” a hope which was as “an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast.” Hebrews 6:18, 19. They had been witness to the wisdom and power of God, and they were “persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature,” would be able to separate them from “the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” “In all these things,” they said, “we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.” Romans 8:38, 39, 37. “The word of the Lord endureth forever.” 1 Peter 1:25. And “who is he that condemneth? Do not worry. “Be still and know that I am God.” [Psalm 46:10.] This is a great and very precious privilege. You love Jesus, and Jesus loves you. Your love to Jesus may oft appear feeble and fluctuating, yet is never failing, being supplied with His fulness, which is never failing. No one can separate a believer from Christ, or Christ from a believer. The apostle refers not to our love to Jesus, but the love of Jesus to us. You are beloved of Jesus. My dear sister, the Lord has been very merciful to you and your family. You are laid under obligation to your heavenly Father to praise and glorify His holy name upon the earth. In order to continue in His love, you should labor constantly for humbleness of mind and that meek and quiet spirit which is in the sight of God of great price. Your strength in God will increase while you consecrate all to Him; so that you can say with confidence: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35, 38, 39.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

The branch has a living union with the living vine, and as such the words of Paul are appropriate, “Who shall separate us from the love of God, in Christ Jesus?” [Romans 8:35, 39.] Shall affliction, storm, tempest, persecution, life, or death? Paul says, No, nothing shall be able to do this. The branch derives all its fruit-bearing qualities from the parent stock. The branches do not sustain the vine, but the vine sustains the branches. “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit.” [John 15:8.] Here is the test, the criterion before the world that we are branches of the True Vine. Our profession alone is no proof. The only real proof that we bear to the world that we are Christians is the quality of fruit which we bear. “By their fruits ye shall know them.” [Matthew 7:20.] Heavenly intelligences never make a mistake.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

I have been deeply afflicted; but the grace of Christ has been sufficient, and I have been enabled to be cheerful and happy amid all that I have been called upon to pass through. I could lift up my head and rejoice that the coming of the Lord draweth nigh, for then we shall see Him as He is, and be made like Him. Our faith is founded upon infallible promises. We can say, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation?” [Romans 8:35]—no, for this makes us feel that Christ alone is our refuge, and we flee to Him for shelter.7LtMs, Lt 25, 1892, par. 10
“Or sword?” Of Mary, the mother of Jesus, Simeon prophesied, “Behold this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; yea, a sword shall pierce through thine own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts might be revealed.” [Luke 2:34, 35.] The sword cannot kill the soul for the life is hid with Christ in God. Well may we ask with Paul, “Who shall separate us from the love of God?” And answer, “For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” [Romans 8:38, 39.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The question is asked, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” [Romans 8:35.] Hear the triumphant cry of victory from the apostle Paul, that hero of faith: “I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” [Verses 38, 39.] “I know in whom I have believed.” [2 Timothy 1:12.] We are not to be ignorant as to whose precious blood was shed for us, [in order] that we may rejoice in a personal Saviour. When the branch is united with the living vine, it will bear much fruit. What a beautiful representation Christ has given us in the symbol of the vine and the branches. Those who believe in Christ are represented as being brought into as close connection with him as the branch is connected with the vine, which sustains and nourishes it. The branch grows from the vine, is a part of the vine; and believers in Christ are represented as one with Christ, as Christ is one with the Father. The union is so close and vital that the words of Paul have a precious significance, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” Shall affliction, storm, tempest, persecution, life, or death? “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.” [Romans 8:35, 37-39.]Education

I had great freedom in dwelling upon the establishment of the Christian church, showing that Paul was hunted from place to place by the bigoted Jews. They would give him no rest, but stirred up both Jews and Gentiles in opposition and to persecute and attempt to assassinate him. Paul knew what it was to preach Christ and Him crucified under difficulties. Yet as he looked over his trying experience, he faced future trials and threatenings of suffering like a bold soldier of the cross of Christ and exclaimed, “I am persuaded,” etc. [Verse 38.] Just such opposition those who keep the Sabbath of the fourth commandment may expect to receive. They have tasted of the same spirit of malice, of unreasonable opposition, from the First-Day Adventists. In Newburyport John Pierson had acted over the same part Miles Grant had acted and was still acting. He had made me the subject of his falsehood and with bitterness of malice had sought to disgust the people, that they would have no more to do with the Sabbath. But his efforts turned against himself; he overdid the matter. He was following Elder Canright with the bitter spirit of opposition, blowing out poison against the visions.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Not because we first loved Him, does God love us; but “while we were yet sinners” (Romans 5:8) Christ died for us, making full and abundant provision for our redemption. Although by our disobedience we have merited God’s displeasure and condemnation, He has not forsaken us; He has not left us to grapple with the power of the enemy in our own finite strength. Heavenly angels fight our battles for us; and co-operating with them, we may be victorious over the powers of evil. Trusting in Christ as our personal Saviour, we may be “more than conquerors through him that loved us” (Romans 8:37).3The Review and Herald, September 15, 1896.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Like a roaring lion, Satan is seeking for his prey. He tries his wiles upon every unsuspecting youth; there is safety only in Christ. It is through His grace alone that Satan can be successfully repulsed. Satan tells the young that there is time enough yet, that they may indulge in sin and vice this once and never again; but that one indulgence will poison their whole life. Do not once venture on forbidden ground. In this perilous day of evil, when allurements to vice and corruption are on every hand, let the earnest, heartfelt cry of the young be raised to heaven: “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?” And may his ears be open and his heart inclined to obey the instruction given in the answer: “By taking heed thereto according to thy word” (Psalm 119:9). The only safety for the youth in this age of pollution is to make God their trust. Without divine help they will be unable to control human passions and appetites. In Christ is the very help needed.... You can say with the apostle: “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us” (Romans 8:37). The psalmist, when viewing the many snares and temptations to vice, inquires, “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?” This question is appropriate for every one connected with our missions and every instrumentality of God. At this stage of our work, the answer comes, “By taking heed thereto according to Thy word.” [Psalm 119:9.] It is necessary to maintain a living connection with Heaven, seeking as often as did Daniel—three times a day—for divine grace to resist appetite and passion. Whenever you are tempted to sin remember that Christ’s eye is upon you, and that Satan desires to have you that he may sift you as wheat. Send up an earnest cry to God, “Lord, save me; I perish,” and you will not be overcome; you will not enter into sin. The more we feel the influence of this love, the more meek and humble shall we be. “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” Paul exclaims; “how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” Romans 11:33. “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” [Romans 8:38, 39.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

God has marked out the way with His prophetic guideposts. We are not left to depend on man’s wisdom. The great waymarks God Himself has raised show us that the path of obedience is the only path we can follow with certainty. Men break their word, and prove themselves untrustworthy, but God changes not. His Word will abide the same forever. Those who love and obey the law of Jehovah will meet with trials and temptations, but this is only what Jesus met, and He declares, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” [John 10:27, 28.] If we hope and pray and by faith trust His Word, we shall be able to say with Paul, “I am persuaded that neither life nor death, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” [Romans 8:38, 39.]Early Writings

TSB 255.2
The souls that turn to Him for refuge, Jesus lifts above the accusing and the strife of tongues. No man or evil angel can impeach these souls. Christ unites them to His own divine-human nature. They stand beside the great Sin Bearer in the light proceeding from the throne of God. “Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us” [Romans 8:33, 34].—The Desire of Ages, 568.The Desire of Ages

Though every individual is a probationer, and every day men are deciding their own future destiny, though this is an awful thought, and you feel intensely over the matter, yet you cannot make those who will not place themselves in the channel of light stand where they may reflect the glory of God. One thing is certain, the names of all the chosen are upon the breastplate of our great High Priest. He says, “I have graven thee on the palms of my hands.” [Isaiah 49:16.] O, He loves us! He loves us! Praise His holy name! He has bound us to His great heart of love. “Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died.” But we are not left with Christ in Joseph’s new tomb. “Yea, rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” [Romans 8:33, 34.]
