When the minister goes forth to labor he can say, I go in the strength of the God of Israel. I have no confidence in self. I have no confidence in my finite ability, but I have a standing promise from One who says, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] You have no lack of power then. What more assurance do you want? “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” [John 15:7.] Do you believe it? Do you believe the promise?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

They regretted that I must leave them and said if I could remain with them a couple of weeks and speak to them as often as I had strength, they would consider it a great favor. They begged me that when I returned I should spend some months with them. They said, Your words have done us good, and you can be a blessing to the people at Honolulu. They blessed me in the name of the Lord, and said, The Lord will go before you that you may speak these words to many souls who need to hear them. I was glad I consented to speak to them, venturing the whole matter on the promise of the Lord, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] I felt that Jesus was indeed with me that night by His Holy Spirit.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

My burden seems at times heavier than I can bear. But the Lord will give me His grace to endure. “Lo, I am with you alway, even to the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Truth will triumph. But will Edson triumph with the truth? Will Edson bear the banner of Christ through evil report as well as good? My heart fears for him. I tremble on his behalf.Gospel Workers (1892/1893 ed.)
Pastoral Labor
GW92 78.1
In view of these grave responsibilities, the question will arise, “Who is sufficient for these things?” [2 Corinthians 2:16.] The heart of the laborer will almost faint as he considers the various arduous duties devolving upon him; but the words of Christ strengthen the soul with the comforting assurance, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] The difficulties and dangers that threaten the safety of those he loves, should make him cautious and circumspect in his manner of dealing with them, and watchful of them as one who must give an account. He should judiciously employ his influence in winning souls to Christ, and impressing the truth upon inquiring minds. He should take care that the world, by its delusive attractions, does not lead them away from God, and steel their hearts against the influence of his grace.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

It is our privilege to establish habits of looking unto Jesus who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. He hath promised to be the widow’s God and husband. You need in seasons of trial all the support and consolation which can be drawn from righteous principles, from fixed religious convictions, from an abiding trust and confidence in One who loves you and hath said, “Lo I am with you alway.” [Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

The truth must be proclaimed in the dark places of the earth. Obstacles must be met and surmounted. A great work is to be done, and those who know the truth should make mighty intercession for help now. The love of Christ must be diffused in their own hearts. The Spirit of Christ must be poured out upon them, and they must be making ready to stand in the judgment. While they are consecrating themselves to God, a convincing power will attend their efforts to present the truth to others. We must sleep no longer on Satan’s enchanted ground, but call into requisition all our resources, and avail ourselves of every facility with which Providence has furnished us. The last warning is to be proclaimed, “before many peoples and nations, and tongues, and kings;” and the promise is given, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Revelation 10:11; Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Sister Rousseau and Sister Daniells linked their forces together and opened to each other the secrets of their hearts, which should never be revealed outside of the family circle. They bound themselves together, sympathizing with each other. I have been shown that the Lord had a great blessing for you three, but you dissolved partnership because everything did not meet your ideas. You left Sister Starr to bear heavy responsibilities, while you stood off to question and find fault. Had you in the name of the Lord taken hold with her, uniting your interests as one, you would have realized a blessing, not only spiritually, but physically. You would have had the sustaining power of God, the presence of One who hath said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Your linking up together, in the Spirit of Christ, would have been health and sufficiency to all three. <You have missed a rich blessing.>Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

He says, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” [Isaiah 9:6.] Now you know just who He is. God help us to cleanse the soul temple of its impurity. God help us that we may give to God an offering that is untainted physically, mentally and morally. Well, “no man can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Those who do the work know better concerning these matters than anyone outside <as spectators.> God moves upon human minds to work according to His will and according to His purpose. Workers for God are to look to a higher Source for direction than to human minds. The minutia and detail of how they are to work is not to be laid down by human minds. When we decide that Jesus Christ will not do as He has said He will do, <“Lo, I am with you alway even unto the end of the world” [Matthew 28:20],> when we decide that God has not power, or has not time, to notice His workmen, then it might be more consistent to plan out every detail <of the work.> But we would encourage faith in those who give themselves to the work of God; we would inspire them to believe that God is not unmindful of their labors and trials. He values His human agents, and appoints divine agencies to work with them. <“Ye are laborers together with God.”> [1 Corinthians 3:9.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Time and again you have tried to do the work that God has signified was your work, but you have longed so much for human sympathy and human recognition that when you did not obtain it, you withdrew your hand from the hand of Christ, though he was the very One in whom you could have trusted implicitly, and who has promised to be a present help in every time of need. He says, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” [Hebrews 13:5.] God has chosen you from the beginning of your life to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. The Lord would do large things for man in giving him heavenly endowments, doing to his disciple today as he did to them of old, if he could entrust large blessings to them, and they could bear them. Satan has tempted men to weave themselves into all that they do for God, and with every spiritual connection, that God cannot bestow his rich blessing, because men would exalt themselves, misinterpret and misapply the heavenly gift. A greater than Moses or Joshua is among us, and when we fully realize this fact, and will roll back all the glory to God and to him alone, then the Lord can safely bless his people, and lead them on to victory. We need to understand that all power in heaven and in earth has been committed to the Captain of our salvation, who said for our encouragement, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] “Be of good cheer I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.] Then let us take heed to the injunction of Christ, and not be found guilty of either receiving or giving a title to men that belongs only unto the Lord God of hosts. Let us remember that “holy and reverend is his name.” [Psalm 111:9.]Gospel Workers (1915 ed.)
Faithfulness in Service
GW 16.3
The Lord sends His ministers to hold forth the word of life, to preach, not “philosophy and vain deceit,” nor “science falsely so called,” but the gospel, “the power of God unto salvation.” [Colossians 2:8; 1 Timothy 6:20; Romans 1:16.] “I charge thee therefore,” Paul wrote to Timothy, “before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.” [2 Timothy 4:1-5.] In this charge every minister has his work outlined,—a work that he can do only through the fulfilment of the promise that Jesus gave to His disciples, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” [Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

It is not great talent that we want now, it is humble hearts and direct, consecrated, personal effort, watching, praying, working with all perseverance. The sins of the people may seem so offensive to God as to be invincible, but Christ has sent His representative, the Holy Spirit, surrounding His living agents who are employed to pierce the ignorance with the bright beams of the Son of Righteousness. His voice will give assurance, “Lo I am with you alway, even to the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] The fact is to be ever kept before us, we are carrying forward the warfare in the presence of an invisible world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Do we not want the knowledge which will teach us what that meat is? We do not leave behind the experience we obtain here in heavenly things; we take it with us. Those who shall partake of the bread of life which the Father gives us shall find joy in Jesus Christ. Precious intelligence, that we can live upon this, even though circumstances change! Who are doers of the words of Christ, and not hearers only? How many live up to the profession they make? If we would draw men from the pit of sin, we ourselves must have a firm platform beneath our feet. The closer we keep to Christ, the more meek and lowly, the more self-distrustful, the firmer will be our hold upon Christ, and the greater will be our power through Christ to convert sinners, for it is not the human agent who moves the soul. Heavenly intelligences co-operate with the human agent, and impress the truth upon the heart. Abiding in Christ, we are able to exercise an influence over others, but it is because of the presence of Him who says, “Lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Speak short. Your discourses are generally double the length they should be. It is possible to handle a good thing in such a manner that it loses its flavor. When a discourse is too long, the last part of the teaching detracts from the force and interest of that which has preceded it. Do not wander, but come right to the point. Give the people manna from heaven, and the Spirit will bear witness with your spirit that it is not you that speaks, but that the Holy Spirit speaks through you. The teacher of the Word of God must first talk with God, and then he can stand before the people with the Holy Spirit working upon his mind. The Need of Training Workers
GW 72.2
Let those who have been trained for service now take their places quickly in the Lord’s work. House-to-house laborers are needed. The Lord calls for decided efforts to be put forth in places where the people know nothing of Bible truth. Singing and praying and Bible-readings are needed in the homes of the people. Now, just now, is the time to obey the commission, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” [Matthew 28:20.] Those who do this work must have a ready knowledge of the Scriptures. “It is written” is to be their weapon of defense. God has given us light on His word, that we may give this light to our fellow-men. The truth spoken by Christ will reach hearts. A “Thus saith the Lord” will fall upon the ear with power, and fruit will appear wherever honest service is done.—Counsels to Teachers, 535-540.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

To all who receive Him, Christ is an inexhaustible treasure house of supply for all spiritual necessities. Then let us take in all the blessedness of the provision made, that when we shall engage in the ordinance of feet washing, we take in all its significance. The Holy Watcher is present from heaven to make this season one of soul searching, one of conviction of sin, and of the blessed assurance of sins forgiven. “Wherefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” [Romans 5:1, 2.] They have the blessed assurance, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] And now, with humble, subdued, and grateful hearts, they come to the sacramental service.12LtMs, Ms 19, 1897, par. 64

One is in our midst who has said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] He is present to impress hearts. Help from Heaven

The worker in a foreign field must carry in his heart the peace and love of heaven; for this is his only safety. Amid perplexity and trial, discouragement and suffering, with the devotion of a martyr and the courage of a hero, he is to hold fast to the hand that never lets go, saying, “I will not fail nor be discouraged.” He must be a close Bible student, and should be often in prayer. If, before talking with others, he will seek help from above, he may be assured that angels of heaven will be with him. At times he may yearn for human sympathy, but in his loneliness he may find comfort and encouragement through communion with God. Let him be cheered by the words of the Saviour, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] From this divine Companion he will receive instruction in the science of soul-saving.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

Acts 1:9. We have not a dead Saviour. He is not sleeping in the tomb, but is risen and He proclaimed above the rent sepulcher of Joseph, “I am the resurrection and the life.” [John 11:25.] As the Lord ascended in the clouds, He extended His hands and blessed His disciples, and said, “Lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] While He was passing out of their sight they heard Him voice this precious promise.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

This is the work that is needed to be done. Let self be merged in Christ, and Christ in God, and there will be a display of His power such as will melt and subdue the heart. The earnest prayer from contrite souls will be lodged by the throne of God. Those who enlist in the army of Christ are expected to do difficult work, to endure trials for Christ’s sake. All are now to obtain an experience that will center their whole hope and faith and confidence in Christ. Then they will have nothing to fear when conflicts come which tear the soul asunder. They will have a refuge. Their energies will be taxed to the uttermost, but they have the assurance of Christ, “Lo, I am with you alway; even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

I have had a restless night. Yesterday my mind was troubled for fear that I would not be able to speak to the people, but I held fast by faith to Him who has said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] The meeting passed off very well. I had freedom in speaking. May the Lord bless the seed sown. I know that many were touched by the words spoken. Tears were shed as I presented the evils of intemperance. Has not Christ left His gospel to the piety of His followers? He has done this. He has presented no other plan. He has provided no other agency. He says, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” [Mark 16:15.] “And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] It is the human agent who must be a channel of light to others. This is the gospel commission. And entire surrender to God, entire dependence upon Him, to work with Him and for Him, will be recognized by the world. But many keep the truth in the outer court. They give only a superficial consent to it. There are souls whom the Lord loves, who know the truth, but who do not honor the God of truth by daily practicing the truth. In Heavenly Places

For a few weeks past I have had a deep sense of the promises of God and the hope of the Christian. The Bible never seemed to me so full of rich gems of promise as within the last few weeks. It seems that the dews of heaven are ready to fall upon us and refresh us, if we will only take the promises to ourselves. We can never overcome our own natural tendencies without the help of Heaven, and the precious Jesus places Himself right by our side to help us in this work. He says, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). We want to believe just what Christ has said. We want that our faith shall compass the promises....Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Who, I inquire, are doers of the Word of God, and not hearers only? How many live their profession? If we would draw men from the pit of sin, we ourselves must have a firm foundation beneath our feet, else the world will draw us into its plans. The closer we keep to the feet of Christ, humble, meek, lowly, distrustful of self, having a firm hold of Jesus, the more power will we have to convert sinners. It is not the human agent who moves the soul, it is the heavenly intelligences co-operating with humanity that impress truth upon minds. It is not our finite power that creates the influence over others, it is the presence of the One who says, “Lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] The power we have to overcome temptation is given us by Christ, who works in us to will and to do of His good pleasure.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

If the apostle could say of the early church, “They glorified God in me,” shall we not strive to live so that the same words can be said of us? [Galatians 1:24.] The Lord will provide ways and means for those who will seek Him with all the heart. He desires us to acknowledge the divine superintendence shown in preparing fields of labor and preparing the way for the successful occupation of these fields. God needs many more laborers in His vineyard. Those who work for Him will meet with discouragement, but the promise is always theirs, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] God will give a most wonderful experience to those who will say, “I believe Thy promise, I will not fail nor become discouraged.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

He who occupies the position of Judge is God manifest in the flesh. What a consolation it will be to recognize in the Judge our Teacher and Redeemer, bearing all the marks of the crucifixion, from which shine beams of glory, giving additional value to the crowns which the redeemed receive from His hands, the very hands outstretched in blessing over His disciples as He ascended. The very voice which said to them, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” [Matthew 28:20], bids them welcome to His presence. The very one who gave His precious life for them, who by His grace moved their hearts to repentance, who awakened them to their need of salvation, receives them now into His joy. O how they love Him! There are some other things which I shall speak of in my coming letter. Light has been given me in reference to the Lord’s way of working, and the obstructions that would be brought up to oppose; but these things should not hinder Brother and Sister Haskell and Brother Brunson from moving forward, leaning on the arm of the One who has said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Lean heavily, but only on God. Pray in faith, and believe that ye receive the things ye ask for. We have a risen Saviour, not a dead Christ. He broke the fetters of the tomb and came forth from its dark borders, triumphantly proclaiming His victory over death and the grave, saying, “I am the resurrection, and the life.” [John 11:25.] He is our Saviour. We are to have an intense interest in Christ Jesus, for He is our Saviour. He came to this world to be tempted in all points as we are, to prove to the universe that in this world of sin human beings can live lives that God will approve.... Let us seek for the blessings that Christ has placed within our reach, that we may be made capable of receiving more and still more of His grace, and that we may be filled with a living, active, growing faith—a faith that believes the promise, “Lo, I am with you always, ...” (Matthew 28:20).15The Review and Herald, March 9, 1905.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

During the Conference I was very weak with my recent sickness of malaria and bloody flux, but even when speaking I was silently praying to God whenever I could hesitate a moment. Frequently I dared not limit myself to one hour in speaking. I frequently spoke for more than one hour, and God strengthened me. How could I keep silent, how could I give an indulgent, commonplace talk, when my soul was deeply feeling the perils of the people? A burden had been laid upon me, and I felt the necessity of speaking, even though it be at the peril of my life. I knew this peril, and therefore paused for a moment from time to time to send my unuttered prayer to the One who has said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

He went about doing good, teaching the ignorant and healing the sick. And His work never stopped with an exhibition of His power to heal physical disease. I have read your letter to Brother Gowell, and the answer from Brother Evans. All these things will be. We need to take all things to God in prayer, and to look unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith. I do not advise you to make any more appeals direct to the Review and Herald. They are just now very much tried in regard to an article that I have sent for publication—not an appeal for help, but a setting-forth of some things in regard to the purification of the office and the advisability of those in positions of responsibility not being held in their positions until they feel they are a fixture. We must not look to man or trust in man. We must look beyond man to God. He is our helper. Are we not under the divine theocracy? I feel a great peace in trusting in the Lord God of heaven. Everything connected with the cause of God is sacred and is to be thus regarded by His people. The councils that have any reference to the cause of God are sacred. Christ gave His life to bring a sinful world to repentance. Those who are imbued with the Spirit that dwelt in Christ will work as God’s husbandmen in caring for His vineyard. They will not merely work in spots which they may choose. They are to be wise managers and faithful workers, making it their highest aim to fulfill the commission which Christ has given. Then they would not send thousands of miles to learn from human beings their duty. I cannot tell you how many letters came to me across the broad Pacific, when I was in Australia, asking for counsel. What did Christ promise His disciples if they would believe in Him as their personal Saviour? “Lo, I am with you alway,” He said, “even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Again, He says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee.” [See Isaiah 41:13.] Think of how many promises He has given us, which we may grasp by the hand of faith. When we go to the Source of power, we know that we shall receive that intelligence and wisdom which comes from a pure source, which is not mixed with anything of humanity. As we pray, it is our privilege to know that God wants us to pray, to ask Him for help. “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] It is for you to believe that you will receive. He wants us to become acquainted with Him, to speak to Him, to tell Him of our difficulties, and obtain an experience in asking of One who never misjudges and never makes a mistake.16LtMs, Ms 144, 1901, par. 9
When I open a letter beginning, “I am sorry to trouble you, Sister White, but I am in trouble, and I wish to know something in regard to my family and in regard to myself,” I feel so sad at heart. When it is essential for you to know, God will let you know. He has promised that if you ask wisdom from Him, He will give it to you. But it is not always essential for us to know all the why’s and wherefore’s. We dishonor God by striving to get some one whom we think understands our case to help us. Has He not given us His only begotten Son? Is not Christ close beside us, and will He not give us the help we need? “Lo, I am with you always,” He says, “even to the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] His Word repeats the promise over and over again. “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it,” He says. “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” [John 14:14, 15.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Many of the members of our churches may feel that we are sending off too many of the Conference laborers, and that the work in the home field cannot be done by the few that remain. But this is not the proper view to take of this matter. Those in the employ of the Conference are not the only ones who should work for souls. Let the churches go to work. Let them communicate to others the knowledge that they have received. Our church members in many churches have heard discourse after discourse, and yet they do not seem to have a large measure of the Holy Spirit. Many of them sent letters across the broad Pacific to me while I was in Australia, inquiring why they did not receive more power from above, and requesting me to pray for them. They did not seem to comprehend the reality of the promise of the Saviour, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] They did not seem to realize that they could gain additional spiritual strength by imparting to their neighbors and friends the light they had received. They had not learned that a great blessing comes to us from telling our fellow beings enslaved by appetite, that it is possible for them to receive a power greater than human power—a power that will enable them to overcome their appetite for tobacco, liquor, tea, coffee, and every other harmful substance in which men and women indulge, to the injury of body and mind.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

It was sincere devotion and humble, earnest prayer that brought the disciples into close communion with Christ. They sat together with Him in heavenly places. They realized the greatness of their debt to Him. Shall we be less earnest than they were? Shall we not by living faith claim the promises which moved them to the depths of their being to call upon the Lord Jesus for the fulfilment of the word “Ask, and ye shall receive”? [John 16:24.] Is not the Spirit of God to come today in answer to earnest, persevering prayer, and fill men with power? Is the throne of grace further removed from us than it was from the disciples? Is not God saying today to His praying, trusting, believing workers, who are opening the Scriptures to those ignorant of the precious truth they contain, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world”? We fail many times because we do not realize that Christ is with us by His Spirit as truly as when, in the days of His humiliation, He moved visibly upon the earth. The lapse of time has wrought no change in His parting promise to His apostles as He was taken up from them into heaven: “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). He has ordained that there should be a succession of men who derive authority from the first teachers of the faith for the continual preaching of Christ and Him crucified. The Great Teacher has delegated power to His servants, who “have this treasure in earthen vessels.” Christ will superintend the work of His ambassadors if they wait for His instruction and guidance....Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Your teachers will do all that they can to help you. They will try to show you what you must do to inherit eternal life. They will try to show you how to become conversant with the living principles of truth, that you may stand before God and men on vantage ground. Will you co-operate with your teachers? Will you strive earnestly to become useful men and women? Christ is waiting to help you, and He is an all-powerful Helper. When God gave Him to our world, He gave all heaven. He placed in His hands every power, every facility of heaven, to give to those who receive Him. Christ came to our world to give us an example of what we may become, to show us that we may live a perfect life. He says to us, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Let us press forward unitedly to the help of the Lord, all of one heart and of one mind. Let us not depend on human wisdom. Let us not lean on man. Look beyond human beings to the One appointed by God to bear our griefs and carry our sorrows and supply our necessities. Taking God at His word, move forward with steadfast, unfaltering faith. Christ’s presence and His word, “Lo, I am with you alway”—this is our wisdom and righteousness. [Matthew 28:20.] It is the living Presence that makes the living Word. We must gain complete control of the tones of the voice and of our words and actions. Always remember the promise, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Before you speak, remember who is your companion. Respect the heavenly Guest by tempering the natural impetuosity of your character with meekness and gentleness. We are to realize that the divine Presence is constantly by our side. Christ has said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Remember that He hears every unkind word, every harsh, cutting expression. Could you see Jesus standing by your side, would you speak such words? Then guard carefully every word and action. Walk in all lowliness of mind, cherishing a spirit of meekness and kindness. Live so that others may see that there is a difference between the disposition of a Christian and the disposition of those who make no claim to be Christ’s followers.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

A Precious Experience

Those who work for God will meet with discouragement; but the promise is always theirs, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20. Should we not see in the world today medical missionaries who in all the features of their work are worthy of the name they bear? who aspire to the doing of deeds worthy of valiant soldiers of Christ? We are living near the close of the great conflict, when many souls are to be rescued from the slavery of sin. We are living in a time when to Christ’s followers the promise specially belongs, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] He who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, He who has called us out of darkness into His marvellous light, bids us let our light shine brightly before men, that they may see our good works, and glorify our Father who is in heaven. Many of God’s people are to go forth with publications containing the light of present truth into places where the third angel’s message has never been proclaimed. The work of the canvasser-evangelist who is imbued with the Spirit of God is fraught with wonderful possibilities for good. The presentation of the truth, in love and simplicity, from house to house, is in harmony with the instruction that Christ gave His disciples when He sent them out on their first missionary tour. By songs of praise to God, humble, heartfelt prayers, and a simple presentation of Bible truth in the family circle, many will be reached. The divine worker will be present to send conviction to hearts. “I am with you alway,” is His promise. [Matthew 28:20.] With the assurance of the abiding presence of such a Helper, we may labor with faith and hope and courage.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Jesus is ministering in the heavenly sanctuary, but He is with His workers also; for He declares, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] He is the spiritual Director of His church on earth, and He longs to see the members filled with a determination to labor harmoniously for the advancement of His kingdom. He has raised up a succession of workers who derive their authority from Him, the great Teacher. He has chosen for His work men of varied talents and varied capabilities. Some of these might not be the men you would choose, but you will pass through an experience that will lead you to see that God exalts men whom you would regard as inferior to yourselves. When the judgment shall sit, and the books are opened, many will be surprised by God’s estimate of character. They will realize that God sees not as man sees, that He judges not as human beings judge. He reads the heart. He knows the motives that prompt to action, and He recognizes and commends every faithful effort put forth for Him.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

This morning I have read over the letters I have written you, and I will now write a letter to you both. Do not for one moment think of separating. See how much of the precious graces of the Spirit you can each bring into your lives. Soon we shall see the King in His beauty. In this life we are to get a fitting up that will enable us to act a part in the future life. Remember that the eye of Christ is upon you both. He says, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Study His life and follow His example. Never give way to your feelings, but move from a consciousness that Christ is your only hope. Commune with Him. “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you, both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” [Philippians 2:12, 13.] Take your position on the side of God. See in the beauty and perfection of His created works a revelation of His power and goodness and majesty. He desires to form in each of you a character like His own perfect character, that your record in the books of heaven may be, “Ye are complete in Him.” [Colossians 2:10.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 4 [Nos. 210-259]

Today Satan strives to lead the disciples of Christ from their allegiance. He is a wary, artful foe, and were we left to battle against him in our own strength, we should be overcome. But help has been laid upon one that is mighty. When Christ went away, He said to His disciples, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.] “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end.” [Matthew 28:20.] In this promise the lapse of time has wrought no change. Though now He has ascended to the presence of God, and shares the throne of the universe, Jesus has lost none of His compassionate nature. Today the same tender, sympathizing heart is open to all the woes of humanity. Today the hand that was pierced is reached forth to save His people that are in the world. They shall never perish, He says, “neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” [John 10:28.] The one who has given himself to God is more precious than the whole world. The Saviour would have passed through the agony of Calvary, that one might be saved in His kingdom. He will never abandon one for whom He died. Unless His followers choose to leave Him, He will hold them fast.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Nashville needs help just now, and Washington and Berrien Springs. Let all who can, place the work upon a higher ground, growing larger and larger bases. Those farmers tilling the soil can reason from cause to effect. Their seed must be put in in season. In order to be successful there is pruning to be done, pruning of the orchards, and every tree bearing fruit is to be cared for in its season. “Ye are God’s husbandry,” others are God’s building, but all, harmonious in action, are to be planting the seeds of truth in men’s hearts. [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Ministers of the Word [are] to speak a word in season. “Go, ye therefore into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,” “teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:20.] Let the farmers, the carpenters, [and] the men who have various kinds of business be diligent and acquire in order to improve your talents to impart, to be used in wisdom to the glory of God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Lend your neighbors some of our smaller books. If their interest is awakened, take them some of the larger books. Show them Christ’s Object Lessons, tell them its history, and ask them if they do not want a copy. If they already have it, ask them if they do not want to read other books of a similar nature. If possible, secure an opportunity to teach them the truth. Beside all waters the workers are to sow the seeds of truth, not knowing which shall prosper, this or that, but ever walking in humility and trust beside the One who has declared, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” [Matthew 28:20.]19LtMs, Ms 68, 1904, par. 14
Let every one who has eaten of the bread which came down from heaven labor in all simplicity to teach others what they must do to be saved. Little missionary work is done, and what is the result? The truths that Christ gave are not taught. God’s people are not growing in grace. Many are in an unpleasant, complaining frame of mind. Those who are not doing their duty, who are not helping others to see the importance of the truths for this time, must feel dissatisfied with themselves. Satan takes advantage of this feature in their experience and leads them to criticize and find fault. If they were busily engaged in seeking to know and do the will of God, they would feel such a burden for perishing souls, such an unrest of mind, that they could not be restrained from fulfilling the commission, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature, teaching them all things whatsoever I have commanded.” [Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Our medical missionary work is to be to the third angel’s message as the right hand to the body. Our sanitariums are one great means of doing medical missionary work. They are to reach the people where they are. The workers in our sanitariums are to be sympathetic, kind, and straightforward in their dealings with one another and with the patients. Their words and acts are to be noble and upright. They are ever to receive from Christ light and grace to impart to those in darkness. By their efforts the sick, the sinful, the prodigals, who have left the Father’s house, are to be encouraged to return. God’s words to these workers are, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” [Matthew 28:20.] “Fear not, neither be discouraged; for I am thy God.” [See Isaiah 41:10.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 10 [Nos. 771-850]

No amount of tribulation can separate us from Christ. If He leads us to Rephidim, it is because He sees that it is for our good and for His name’s glory. If we will look to Him in trusting faith, He will, in His own time, turn the bitterness of Marah into sweetness. He can open the flinty rock, and cause cooling streams to flow forth. Then shall we not lift our voices in praise and thanksgiving for past mercies, and go forward with full assurance that He is an ever-present help in time of trouble? We have been making earnest calls for help for mission fields, but I know of no more needy field than the South. We shall help you all we can. You will remember the poverty that we met when starting the work in New England, in Boston, New Bedford, and other places. But the difficulties we encountered only made us unite in pushing forward the harder, and we have not forgotten what wonderful victories the Lord gave us. How many times there came upon us trials that almost overpowered us. In every place, heresies came in, and every conceivable error strove for entrance. What were our weapons? Faith and prayer. In the Bible readings that are held, choose interesting subjects, which are full of encouragement and lead the minds of your hearers on step by step. In giving instruction regarding the things of God, let your language be so simple, that a child can understand it. Your own heart should be full of the Spirit of God as you strive to follow the instruction, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” [Matthew 28:20.] In your teaching, you must realize that your hearers know little about the Word of God, that their understanding in regard to heavenly things is limited. You must make the main points plain and clear, repeating them again and again.20LtMs, Lt 343, 1905, par. 11

In our sanitariums, the truth is to be cherished, not banished or hidden from sight. The light is to shine forth in clear, distinct rays. Let the churches be converted at this period of this earth’s history. Let them make a decided and determined point that they will have Jesus Christ as a member of their household. “Lo, I am with you alway, even to the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Now God wants us to act as if in His presence, to know that He hears every word. I know you understand that whoever attempts the work of reform will have decided opposition to meet. This work requires self-renunciation. The Lord has said to those who are carrying out the great gospel commission: “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Patriarchs and Prophets
Introduction
PP 20.1
To show how this promise was to be fulfilled to the church, the apostle Paul, in two of his epistles, presents formal declaration that certain gifts of the Spirit have been placed in the Church for its edification and instruction to the end of time. 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4:8-13; Matthew 28:20 Nor is this all: a number of clear and explicit prophecies declare that in the last days there will be a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and that the church at the time of Christ’s appearing will have had, during its closing experience, “the testimony of Jesus,” which is the spirit of prophecy. Acts 2:17-20, 39; 1 Corinthians 1:7; Revelation 12:17; Revelation 19:10. In these facts we see an evidence of God’s care and love for His people; for the presence of the Holy Spirit as a comforter, teacher, and guide, not only in its ordinary, but in its extraordinary, methods of operation, certainly is needed by the church as it enters the perils of the last days, more than in any other part of its experience.PP 23.1
On the Day of Pentecost the disciples were thus endued with power from on high. But this promise of Christ’s was not, any more than the prophecy of Joel, confined to that occasion. For He gave them the same promise in another form by assuring them that He would be with them always, even to the end of the world. Matthew 28:20. Mark tells us in what sense and what manner the Lord was to be with them. He says, “And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” Mark 16:20. And Peter, on the Day of Pentecost, testified concerning the perpetuity of this operation of the Spirit which they had witnessed. When the convicted Jews said unto the apostles, “What shall we do?” Peter answered, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:37-39. This certainly provides for the operation of the Holy Spirit in the church, even in its special manifestations, to all coming time, as long as mercy shall invite men to accept the pardoning love of Christ.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

The Lord is calling upon His people to take up different lines of missionary work. Those who are in the highways and the hedges are to hear the saving gospel message. Church members are to do evangelistic work in the homes of their friends and neighbors who have not received full evidence of the truth. The presentation of the truth in love and sympathy, from house to house, is in harmony with the instruction that Christ gave to His disciples when He sent them out on their first missionary tour. By songs of praise to God, by humble, heart-felt prayers, by a simple presentation of Bible truth in the family circle, many will be reached. The divine Worker will be present to send conviction to hearts. “I am with you alway,” is His promise. [Matthew 28:20.] With the assurance of the abiding presence of such a Helper, we may labor with faith and hope and courage.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 23 (1908)

Now is our time to make decided efforts to awaken the people who have never yet been warned. Much thought and labor is given to the printed page. This is well; but if more effort were given to sending forth the living missionary to preach the truth, many more souls would be aroused and won to the truth. While Jesus ministers in the true sanctuary above, He is through His Holy Spirit working through His earthly messengers. These agencies will accomplish more than the printed page, if they will go forth in the Spirit and power of Christ. Christ will work through His chosen ministers, filling them with His Spirit, and thus fulfilling to them the assurance, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Counsels on Health

Sanitariums are to be so established and conducted that they will be educational in character. They are to show to the world the benevolence of Heaven. Though Christ’s visible presence is not discerned, yet the workers may claim the promise, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20. He has assured His followers that to those who love and fear Him He will give power to continue the work that He began. He went about doing good, teaching the ignorant and healing the sick. His work did not stop with an exhibition of His power over disease. He made each work of healing an occasion of implanting in the heart the divine principles of His love and benevolence. Thus His followers are to work. Christ is no longer in this world in person, but He has commissioned us to carry forward the medical missionary work that He began; and in this work we are to do our very best. What is our work? “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” And our assurance of success? “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” [Matthew 28:20.] Verily, this is enough for us to rely upon.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

Much thought and labor is given to the circulation of the printed page. This is well, and efforts along this line are never to be permitted to slacken; but if more of an effort than is now put forth were given to the sending out of the living missionary to preach the truth, many, many souls would be aroused and won to Christ. While Jesus ministers in the true sanctuary above, He is by His Holy Spirit working through His earthly messengers. The word of the living preacher will often accomplish even more than the printed page. As the Lord’s servants go forth, trusting in divine power, the Master of the vineyard will work through His chosen ministers, bestowing upon them His Spirit and fulfilling to them the assurance, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

The principles of health reform are to be promulgated in the state of Maine. In Buffalo, New York, the voice of the third angel’s message is to be heard with power. Let the teachings of health reform be brought into every effort made to get the light of truth before the people. Let workers be selected who are qualified to teach the truth wisely in clear, simple lines. Let us not wait before beginning this work until all the way is made clear. Faith says, Move forward. Christ says, “Lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Go on, step by step, departing not from that spirit of sanctification through the truth which the presence of the Spirit of God and obedience to the truth will give. Let none who have accepted this blessed faith and hope be found lacking in the spirit of self-sacrifice as they engage in the sacred work of presenting to the people the truth in its simplicity.Jesus, Name Above All Names

His voice will give assurance, “Lo I am with you alway, even to the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). There is danger of those in our ranks making a mistake in regard to receiving the Holy Ghost. Many suppose an emotion or a rapture of feeling to be an evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit. There is danger that right sentiments will not be understood, and that Christ’s words, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20), will lose their significance. There is danger that original devisings and superstitious imaginings will take the place of the Scriptures. Tell our people: “Be not anxious to bring in something not revealed in the Word. Everything connected with the cause of God is sacred, and is to be thus regarded by His people. The counsels that have any reference to the cause of God are sacred. Just before His ascension the Saviour told His disciples that beginning at Jerusalem they must go to all nations, kindreds, tongues, and peoples; and He added, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20).—Manuscript 14, 1901.Steps to Christ
Chapter 8—Growing Up Into Christ
SC 73.2
When Christ ascended to heaven, the sense of His presence was still with His followers. It was a personal presence, full of love and light. Jesus, the Saviour, who had walked and talked and prayed with them, who had spoken hope and comfort to their hearts, had, while the message of peace was still upon His lips, been taken up from them into heaven, and the tones of His voice had come back to them, as the cloud of angels received Him—“Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20. He had ascended to heaven in the form of humanity. They knew that He was before the throne of God, their Friend and Saviour still; that His sympathies were unchanged; that He was still identified with suffering humanity. He was presenting before God the merits of His own precious blood, showing His wounded hands and feet, in remembrance of the price He had paid for His redeemed. They knew that He had ascended to heaven to prepare places for them, and that He would come again and take them to Himself.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8
Chapter 7—A View of the Conflict
8T 45.4
Should we not see in the world today Christians who in all the features of their work are worthy of the name they bear? who aspire to the doing of deeds worthy of valiant soldiers of the cross? We are living near the close of the great conflict, when many souls are to be rescued from the slavery of sin. We are living in a time when to Christ’s followers the promise specially belongs: “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” Matthew 28:20. He who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, He who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light, bids us let our light shine brightly before men, that they may see our good works and glorify our Father who is in heaven. In such rich measure has light been given to God’s people that Christ is justified in telling them that they are to be the light of the world.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9

A great work is to be done, and those who know the truth should make mighty intercession for help. The love of Christ must fill their own hearts. The Spirit of Christ must be poured out upon them, and they must be making ready to stand in the judgment. As they consecrate themselves to God, a convincing power will attend their efforts to present the truth to others. We must no longer sleep on Satan’s enchanted ground, but call into requisition all our resources, availing ourselves of every facility with which Providence has furnished us. The last warning is to be proclaimed before “many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings,” and the promise is given, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Revelation 10:11; Matthew 28:20.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7

Shall we be less earnest than were the apostles? Shall we not by living faith claim the promises that moved them to the depths of their being to call upon the Lord Jesus for the fulfillment of His word: “Ask, and ye shall receive”? John 16:24. Is not the Spirit of God to come today in answer to earnest, persevering prayer, and fill men with power? Is not God saying today to His praying, trusting, believing workers, who are opening the Scriptures to those ignorant of the precious truth they contain: “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world”? The closer we keep to Christ, and the more meek and lowly and self-distrustful we are, the firmer will be our hold on Christ, and the greater will be our power, through Christ, to convert sinners; for it is not the human agent that moves the soul. Heavenly intelligences co-operate with the human agent and impress the truth upon the heart. Abiding in Christ we are able to exert an influence over others; but it is because of the presence of Him who says: “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20. Will not His affections be centered upon that realm where He is appreciated, and where sinless angels wait to do His bidding? Introduction
GC viii.2
Jesus promised His disciples, “The Comforter which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” “When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: ... and He will show you things to come.” John 14:26; 16:13. Scripture plainly teaches that these promises, so far from being limited to apostolic days, extend to the church of Christ in all ages. The Saviour assures His followers, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20. And Paul declares that the gifts and manifestations of the Spirit were set in the church “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:12, 13.The Great Controversy

He who is “able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think,” had granted them, with the fellowship of His sufferings, the communion of His joy—the joy of “bringing many sons unto glory,” joy unspeakable, an “eternal weight of glory,” to which, says Paul, “our light affliction, which is but for a moment,” is “not worthy to be compared.”The Great Controversy (1888 ed.)

Let us strive with earnestness for the victory over sin. Let us be determined not to give place to the enemy by criticizing, by picking flaws, by demeriting others, and seeking to be first. Let us study the prayer made in our behalf, and work for its fulfillment. Let us keep our eyes fixed upon the perfect Pattern. The only way to avoid dissension and strife is to behold Him who came to this world to save sinners. It is for this object that His followers are to work. They are to yoke up with the Saviour, learning of Him His meekness and lowliness. He says to us, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20. How then can there be dissension and strife among us? If we live as in Christ’s presence, there will be no contention. There will be no hesitancy about introducing new plans of action, as the Holy Spirit may move upon some one to suggest them. The Story of Jesus

What did Christ promise His disciples if they would believe in Him as their personal Saviour? “Lo, I am with you alway,” He said, “even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). Again He says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee” (see Psalm 16:8). Think of how many promises He has given us, which we may grasp by the hand of faith. When we go to the Source of power, we know that we shall receive that intelligence and wisdom which comes from a pure source, which is not mixed with anything of humanity. As we pray, it is our privilege to know that God wants us to pray, to ask Him for help. “Ask, and ye shall receive” (John 16:24). It is for you to believe that you will receive. Jesus is ministering in the heavenly sanctuary, but He is with His workers also; for He declares, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). He is spiritual director of His church on earth, and He longs to see the members filled with a determination to labor harmoniously for the advancement of His kingdom.
