We need a closer conformity to the character of Christ, a closer communion with Him who has said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

Tell them that Christ gave His life on Calvary’s cross to save to the uttermost all who come to Him, and that He has commissioned His disciples to carry on His work in the world, saying, “All power is given unto me, in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

Let us seek to understand the commission which Christ gave to His disciples. “Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

After Christ had broken the fetters of the tomb, prior to ascending on high, leading captivity captive and giving gifts unto men, He declared to His disciples: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

16LtMs, Ms 102, 1901, par. 20

God “hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.” [Verse 13.] We are to be “conformed to the image of his Son.” “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” [Romans 8:29; 12:2.] In this world we are to be transformed by the Holy Spirit of God. We are left free to choose to follow the One who said, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth” [Matthew 28:18], or to turn away from Him to the world.

16LtMs, Ms 102, 1901, par. 31

What an important work it is to properly instruct children in the home! This work must be done, not only that they may escape the corruption that is in the world through lust, but that through Christ and through a knowledge of the Word of God they may have “all power” to proclaim to others that it is their privilege to accept the gift of everlasting life. [See Matthew 28:18.]

16LtMs, Ms 102, 1901, par. 34

To every one has been given the wonderful talent of speech. Let us cultivate this talent, never misrepresenting Christ, never casting a shadow on those with whom we speak. We are to speak the truth in love. This truth may cut those to whom we tell it, because they are not in harmony with it; but the truth must be spoken. If while we are talking we see the Spirit of God exerting an influence upon human hearts, we are to take no glory to ourselves; for it is Christ Himself working through the human instrumentality. He says, “Lo, I am with you alway.” [Verse 20.] “Without me ye can do nothing.” [John 15:5.] In the presence of such a Companion, we ought to walk worthy, realizing that as His representatives we are in this world to glorify Him.

Power to Be Obtained Through Prayer—My mind has been dwelling upon the subject of prayer. Little groups should gather and seek the Lord earnestly. We are, as a people, sadly neglecting this means of grace. Christ declares—and the words were spoken after His resurrection—“All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” And because of this power, He adds the great gospel commission: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” [Matthew 28:18-20].—Letter 320, 1906.—(To S. All these developments, in addition to the scenes of the crucifixion and the resurrection, gave the disciples courage. The raising of Jesus from the dead and His ascension to heaven, as well as the horrible death of Judas, placed the disciples on vantage ground. If Christ had not borne with Judas until the end, the results of the betrayer’s course would not have been impressive enough to stay the hands of the persecutors, and the most terrible scenes would have been witnessed after Christ’s ascension. Instead of putting to death only Stephen, they would have made an effort to destroy all the apostles. But God worked by His Holy Spirit, and five thousand were converted in one day. Let God be true and every man a liar. Christ Jesus stands at the helm. “Lo,” He declares, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]

God forbids that our churches and institutions shall be content to leave untouched the fields that are still unworked. The Saviour is saying to us, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] “Teaching them”—not merely preaching a discourse now and then, but teaching them how to find the way to heaven.

“Who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks.” [Verse 1.] Christ’s presence is constantly with His church. Constantly He is imparting knowledge and grace to His representatives; and He expects them to impart others the gifts they receive. To His disciples He says, “Go, go!” As the disciples were conversing with Him just before his ascension, He gave them the gospel commission. “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth,” He declared. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,” is the commission Christ has given us. [Mark 16:15.] This is our great missionary charter. And Christ has declared, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] Success will reward obedience to this command. Go just where the Lord sends you, to bear His message and do His work. Souls are to be saved. How?—By being brought to a knowledge of the truth. “Sanctify them through thy truth,” the Saviour prayed. [John 17:17.] Acquaintance with God’s truth is the only means of sanctification.

To all comes the temptation to gratify selfish, extravagant desires, but let us remember that the Lord of life and glory came to this world to teach humanity the lesson of self-denial. Ever bear in mind that a Paul plants, an Apollos waters, but God gives the increase. The people need to be educated to understand the Word of God. Help every soul to build on a sure foundation. The Word of God is to be their counsellor. Our ministers, physicians, and evangelists are to understand that they are to be shepherds of the flock of God. “Feed my sheep;” “feed my lambs,” was the word of God to Peter. [John 21:15-17.] “When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.” [Luke 22:32.] The instruction the Lord of glory gave to His disciples when He was on this earth is a type and pattern of the instruction His servants are to give to the people who in this our day are seeking for truth. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His last words to His disciples, just before the cloud of angels received Him out of their sight, were, “All power is given unto me in heaven and earth.

The Lord’s human agents are to do just as the Saviour commanded them. Faithfully they are to discharge the commission, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” [Matthew 28:20.] “All things.” This comprehends much. Christ has authority over all, and power to direct and govern all. We are to put our trust in Him whose we are by creation and by redemption. Constantly exercising faith, putting full confidence in His power, following His example, as we strive to save souls we shall see the fruit of our labor. Christ has given us the assurance that He will work with us.

Matthew 28:18-20. “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go Ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

We are living in the last days of this earth’s history, and to all who claim to believe the truth comes the call, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

Money is tied up in Battle Creek that is greatly needed in the Southern Field and in other needy places. Many years have passed since the word of the Lord came to us, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations.” Why is there such a determined refusal to obey this word? Clearly and distinctly are the directions given. “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” [Verses 19, 20.]

“‘Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,’ is the commission Christ has given us. [Mark 16:15.] This is our great missionary charter, and the Saviour has declared: ‘Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.’ ‘All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations.’ [Matthew 28:18-20.] Success will reward obedience to this command. Go just where the Lord sends you to bear His message and do His work. Souls are to be saved. How?—By being brought to a knowledge of the truth. ‘Sanctify them through Thy truth,’ the Saviour prayed. [John 17:17.] Acquaintance with God’s truth is the only means of sanctification.

18LtMs, Ms 141, 1903, par. 13

Do not gather together those to whom God has given this commission and make them believe that they have to spend years in college in order to obtain a training for the Lord’s work. Christ’s presence is of more value than years of training. Let our young people come under the yoke of Christ and by faith go forth as gospel medical missionaries, taking with them the promise, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.] Let them go forth two and two, depending on God, not on man, for their wisdom and their success. Let them search the Scriptures, and then present the truths of God’s Word to others. Let them be guided by the principles that God has laid down.

18LtMs, Ms 141, 1903, par. 15

Workers—gospel medical missionaries—are needed now. We cannot afford to spend years in preparation. Soon doors now open to the truth will be forever closed. Carry the message now. Do not wait, allowing the enemy to take possession of fields now open before you. Let little companies go forth to do the work to which Christ appointed His disciples. Let them labor as evangelists, scattering our publications, talking of the truth to those they meet, praying for the sick, and, if need be, treating them, not with drugs, but with nature’s remedies. Let the workers remember always that they are dependent on God. Let them not trust in human beings for wisdom, but in the One who declares, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” [Verse 18.] Thus we labored in the early history of the message.

18LtMs, Ms 141, 1903, par. 16

My brother, my sister, you have your Bible. It is your directory. When Christ reveals His power to you, there will go with you an influence that will bring success. You are needed in the field. You will go directly contrary to the way that God has marked out if you trust in man and make flesh your arm. I raise the danger signal. What message has God given you? Is it that you are to teach what this doctor says or what that doctor says? No, no! You are to teach, Christ declares, “all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” [Verse 20.] Do as Jesus has told you to do, uniting your heart with His heart, your mind with His mind; and you will be blessed in your work. When you get into difficulty, come together, and bring the matter to the Lord. He will hear your prayers. Do not trust in your own wisdom. Ask God, and He will help you. But however prudent or however wise a man may seem to be, without the help that Christ bestows, he will never make a success.

To all comes the temptation to gratify selfish, extravagant desires, but let us remember that the Lord of life and glory came to this world to teach humanity the lesson of self-denial. Just before His ascension He gave His disciples the work to which they were to make all else subordinate. “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth,” He said. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] The conditions of the atonement had been fulfilled; the work for which Christ came to this world had been accomplished. He was on His way to the throne of God, to be honored by angels, principalities, and powers. Clothed with boundless authority, He gave His commission to the disciples, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Verses 19, 20.]

Shall we not, rather, take God at His word, in every perplexity looking to Him for aid? Shall we not show our faith by our works? We have a right to claim the legacy that Christ has left us. He has promised power to every soul who works in faith and love and truth, believing the promise.

The minister who is merely a speaker, who does not labor as Christ labored, putting his whole soul intelligently into the work, needs true conversion.

Those who have been buried with Christ in baptism are to rise to newness of life.... Upon us is laid a sacred charge. The commission has been given us: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19, RSV).... You are dedicated to the work of making known the gospel of salvation. AA 105.3

Among those to whom the Saviour had given the commission, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19), were many from the humbler walks of life—men and women who had learned to love their Lord and who had determined to follow His example of unselfish service. To these lowly ones, as well as to the disciples who had been with the Saviour during His earthly ministry, had been given a precious trust. They were to carry to the world the glad tidings of salvation through Christ.

The Saviour Himself, during His earthly ministry, foretold the spread of the gospel among the Gentiles. And after His resurrection He commissioned His disciples to go “into all the world” and “teach all nations.” They were to leave none unwarned, but were to “preach the gospel to every creature.” Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15.

To the disciples Christ gave the commission, “Go; make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” [Matthew 28:19.] Churches are to be raised up. By the ordinance of baptism the converted souls are to be dedicated to God, who is known by the manifestation of His Name. Before man can find a home in the church, before passing the threshold of God’s spiritual kingdom, he is to receive the impress of the divine Name, “The Lord our Righteousness.” [Jeremiah 23:6.]

15LtMs, Lt 65, 1900, par. 28

Let us strive with earnestness for the victory over sin. Let us be determined not to give place to the enemy by criticizing, by picking flaws, by demeriting others and seeking to be first. Let us study the prayer made in our behalf, and work for its fulfillment. Let us keep our eyes fixed upon the perfect Pattern. The only way to avoid dissension and strife is to behold Him who came to this world to save sinners. It is for this object that His followers are to work. They are to yoke up with the Saviour, learning of Him His meekness and lowliness. He says to us, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] How then can there be dissension and strife among us?

But the Holy Spirit can so convert these hindering ones that they will be prepared to place the stone behind the wheel, so that it will not roll back. Let us each seek to be ready to place the stone in the proper position. Work, brethren, work with zeal and fervor. Help by prayer and thanksgiving to God. Act as though you believed the promise, “I am with you always.” [Matthew 28:20.]

Why, it is to be fitting for the upper grade. There is a heaven to win and a hell to shun. What are we to do? Why, we are to take advantage of that promise, “Baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” [Matthew 28:19.] All heaven is pledged that wherever you are, in whatever position you are, if you look unto the Author and the finisher of your faith, you will find a Helper in God. Lend your neighbors some of our smaller books. If their interest is awakened, take them some of the larger books. Show them Christ’s Object Lessons, tell them its history, and ask them if they do not want a copy. If they already have it, ask them if they do not want to read other books of a similar nature. If possible, secure an opportunity to teach them the truth. Beside all waters the workers are to sow the seeds of truth, not knowing which shall prosper, this or that, but ever walking in humility and trust beside the One who has declared, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” [Matthew 28:20.]

19LtMs, Lt 169, 1904, par. 20

Let every one who has eaten of the bread which came down from heaven labor in all simplicity to teach others what they must do to be saved. Little missionary work is done, and what is the result? The truths that Christ gave are not taught. God’s people are not growing in grace. Many are in an unpleasant, complaining frame of mind. Those who are not doing their duty, who are not helping others to see the importance of the truth for this time, must feel dissatisfied with themselves. Satan takes advantage of this feature in their experience and leads them to criticize and find fault. If they were busily engaged in seeking to know and do the will of God, they would feel such a burden for perishing souls, such an unrest of mind, that they could not be restrained from fulfilling the commission, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,” “teaching them all things whatsoever I have commanded.” [Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:19.]

21LtMs, Ms 139, 1906, par. 15

When you baptize them, and you see that they are in error in any respect, do you, any one of you that feel that you have a message from God, go to them kindly, and tell them, between them and you alone, where their trouble is, and where their difficulties will come in unless they change the course of their action? This is the work that is to rest upon us. And then what? Why, it says, “Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” [Verse 19.] Three personalities; and these three personalities are the pledged power from God that His people shall have, if they have been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Now there is no excuse for souls to be left in ignorance and weakness if they will be gospel believers, if they will carry out these principles, and know that the three great Worthies, the Powers in heaven, are pledged to the church of God that will work in harmony with Christ’s teachings.

There are those who once were teachers of righteousness, but who have turned from the truth and are wandering in the mists of error. Satan with much persistency is striving for the mastery. Christ calls upon many who are in training for His service to obtain an education of a character altogether different from that which they have been receiving. The Lord Jesus calls upon us to fulfil His commission given just before His ascension to meet the heavenly armies that escorted Him to the city of God. We have the battle of tribulation before us, but our commission is, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] Who will pass this by and continue in any commercial business that will not bring souls to Christ? “For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.” [Verse 20.] Just before His ascension Christ said to the disciples, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

What commission has Christ given just before His ascension? (Matthew 28:19, 20): “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” What shall we teach the people? “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” (Acts 2:42, 43): “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.” Verses 44-47. This is the teaching that will come from men who are imbued with the Holy Spirit.

We have the battle of tribulation before us, but our commission is, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] Who will pass this by and continue in commercial business that will not bring souls to Christ? Shall this condition change? Will you give the last note of warning to the world?

Since Christ has done so much for us, why should we not labor, as He has bidden us, to “go into all the world, and preach the gospel,” teaching to men, “whatsoever I have commanded you.” “And lo,” He adds, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] Why shall we not do the work that God has left for us to do?

Christ came to this world to give an expression of the character of God. And the commission that He gave His disciples is, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] There is to be no such thing as limiting the gospel ministry, and no such thing as hovering over the churches that already know the truth, or collecting large numbers of believers in one place. Under the Holy Spirit’s unction, the gospel message will be proclaimed in the power of the Spirit.

Jesus Christ is the world’s greatest Teacher. I have tested and proved the blessed evidence of this. He has made me His messenger, to communicate great spiritual truths to many thousands. With pen and voice I have been doing this for the past half century. How greatly I desire so to present His instruction that many will be led to Him. I never question His leading, and I know that I am sustained by the One who bade His disciples go forth and proclaim the gospel message, “teaching them all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

Now the outdoor work in camp-meetings should be well managed and every minister understand his commission as from Jesus Christ. And if the ministers are truly converted and copy the pattern Christ Jesus, your faith in the work to be accomplished will testify of the sanctification of the Holy Spirit upon human minds. No careless, reckless work is [to] be accepted. There need to be men that evidence they are born of God through the Holy Spirit. All who are daily under the influence of the Holy Spirit, as Seventh-day Adventists carrying the burden of the work, will be often in humble prayer. Why? Because Satan will try every effort to make them act as superiors. All who take hold of the work are to be under the Holy Spirit of Christ’s dictation, making the Saviour’s words a verity and bringing truth into their daily experience. They will reveal the virtues of Christ’s character, united in the bonds [of] solemn sanctification through the truth of the lessons Christ has taught His disciples. When the people are thus united to Christ and they [go] before a congregation, they will in words and in their manners reveal the virtues of Christ’s character. When in the pulpit or on the platform, they will not act like pugilists, traveling and talking from one end of the platform to the other, even in camp meetings. If they have the Word of God in their heart, there will be no rough presentations. We are to consider Paul’s words, “I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians.” [Romans 1:14.] “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

Chapter 3—The Great Commission

AA 29.2

Christ’s sacrifice in behalf of man was full and complete. The condition of the atonement had been fulfilled. The work for which He had come to this world had been accomplished. He had won the kingdom. He had wrested it from Satan and had become heir of all things. He was on His way to the throne of God, to be honored by the heavenly host. Clothed with boundless authority, He gave His disciples their commission, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” Matthew 28:19, 20.

In the same way the work is to be carried now. Let those preparing to be laborers study Acts 14. Let them become familiar with this whole chapter, for those who will become laborers together with God in these last days will realize similar experiences as those recorded in verse nineteen. “And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, (who had so recently refused to be worshiped as a god), drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. Howbeit, as the disciples stood about him, he rose up, and came into the city; and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. And when he had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch.” Thus they fulfilled the commission given in Matthew 28:19, 20: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Their special work was, “Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must, through much tribulation, enter into the kingdom of God.” Acts 14:22-28. These experiences were of great value to the churches.

The commission reaches those who shall believe on His word through His disciples. And all who are called of God to stand as ambassadors for Him should take the lessons upon practical godliness given them by Christ in His word and teach them to the people.

Success in any mission necessarily means support, and brings increased responsibilities and liabilities, in order to increase and widen the work. But souls are converted to the truth, and these return the means invested. Mission work must not cease because of limited means. Let every church member practice self-denial. The Word of God gives the commission, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” [Verse 15.] There is no restriction, no limit, to the work. This is the work we want to do more fully in this country. We want to represent Christ by reaching out to others. We are to work under the commission Christ gave to His disciples, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe whatsoever I have commanded you, and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] This then is our work, to reach the people who are neglected, and win them to Christ. Until recently our people have made but little or no effort to help these.

But we are to enlarge the circle of our operations, as those who believe they are giving the last message of warning to the world, <as Christ gave to His disciples just before His ascension (Matthew 28:19, 20; Mark 16:19, 20).> God’s professed people in America should have been awake to do this work. In the place of centering so many interests in Battle Creek, plants should have been made in city after city. If they had been filled with zeal for the truth, they would have let their light shine to others, and would have labored to prepare a people to stand in the day of the Lord.

Now how shall the state of things be broken up? [Read] Mark 16:15-18. “So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, confirming the word with signs following.” [Verses 19, 20.] When the Holy Spirit bears the confirmation of the truth at the time of the ministration of the Word, working under the supervision of God, the work will be accompanied with results. The Word of God is then quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword. The promise of God is sure.

The Lord calls for sincere, earnest, determined efforts and for a faith that will not fail nor be discouraged. This world is the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, and it is to be purified and subjected to the rule of Him who shall take the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever and ever. The true missionary spirit is a spirit of implicit, unwavering reliance upon the Word of God. We are now to exercise that faith which takes God at His word. He has commanded us, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

God uses human instrumentalities to communicate His will to those who need help. By preaching and reading and praying, a constant communication is to be kept up between earth and heaven. To His disciples and to us Christ gave the commission: “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” [Mark 16:16-18.]

Thus they fulfilled the commission given in (Matthew 28:19, 20): “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Their special work was “confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.” Acts 14:22. These experiences were of great value to the churches.

After Christ’s resurrection, just before He ascended to heaven, He gave to His disciples the message, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] This is a great and solemn work; but what greater help could we ask than the assurance given in the words, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world”?

By His death, Christ provided a way whereby man might be saved. Ambassadors for Christ

GW92 11.1

While Christ is the minister in the sanctuary above, he is also, through his delegates, the minister of his church on earth. He speaks to the people through chosen men, and carries forward his work through them, as when, in the days of his humiliation, he moved visibly upon the earth. Although centuries have passed, the lapse of time has not changed his parting promise to his disciples. “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] From Christ’s ascension to the present day, men ordained of God, deriving their authority from him, have become teachers of the faith. Christ, the True Shepherd, superintends his work through the instrumentality of these under-shepherds. Thus the position of those who labor in word and doctrine becomes very important. In Christ’s stead they beseech the people to be reconciled to God.

GW92 19.2

The commission which Christ gave to the disciples, just prior to his ascension to heaven, was, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word.” [Matthew 28:19, 20; John 17:20.] The commission reaches those who shall believe on his word through his disciples. And all who are called of God to stand as ambassadors for him, should take the lessons upon practical godliness given them by Christ in his word, and teach them to the people.

The third angel’s message is now to be proclaimed not only in America, but in every other land. The message is to be borne to English-speaking peoples and to the peoples of every other language. Let the believers, as active recipients of God’s blessings, diffuse the light of His truth to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people in obedience to the commission, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] We are not half awake to the importance of this commission. May God place the burden of the proclamation of the message upon His people now, just now, is my prayer.

One soul saved is worth more to Christ than the whole world. Know you not the commission given, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] Christ understands the value of human souls, and He desires His people to put forth all their powers in the work of soul-saving. Then souls will be convicted and converted. This work of soul-saving is to be our burden at this time.

God has made every provision for our justification and sanctification. He has given Christ as the author and finisher of our faith, that He and the heavenly angels may rejoice over those who are made complete in Him. Christ gave His life for sinners. By His death He opened a fountain in which all may wash their robes of character and make them white. Upon the rock of Calvary He laid the corner stone of His church. He died on the cross, but He rose from the tomb, and proclaimed, “I am the resurrection and the life.” [John 11:25.] He made His followers joint heirs with Him of His glory. In His name they were to go forth to carry out His purpose of bringing many souls to a knowledge of the truth. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

In the humble and intelligent performance of this work is the assurance of acceptance with God. His Word is, “Go, ... teach all nations;” and to the command is added the promise, “Lo, I am with you alway.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] The Lord requires of us nothing that He does not give us power to perform. The disciples obeyed the command to bear witness for Christ, and of their experience we read: “They went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” [Mark 16:20.] To you as well as to the disciples these words may be spoken.

When at one time a brother came to me with the message that the world is flat, I was instructed to present the commission that Christ gave His disciples, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations: ...and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] In regard to such subjects as the flat-world theory, God says to every soul, “What is that to thee? follow thou Me. I have given you your commission. Dwell upon the great testing truths for this time, not upon matters that have no bearing upon our work.”

Let all who have light consider the words of Christ to His disciples, spoken before a large audience. Matthew 5, the first two verses, in [Christ’s] Sermon on the Mount, reads, “And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him.” It was always their place to be in the inner circle where they could be nigh the Great Teacher, for they were charged to give attention to every word, which was spoken slowly and distinctly, so that not one idea should be lost or misinterpreted. They were to be prepared to be His messengers to all people, to receive the truth from His lips and impart the truth to others who knew it not. The promise, after His resurrection from the sepulcher of Joseph, was, “Lo, I am with you.” “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you ... even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] His disciples went everywhere teaching the people these precious truths, so plainly specified. These ten verses, [Matthew 5:3-12], embrace so much that is indeed the science of practical godliness. When this science has thoroughly been understood and appreciated, there is a vast field [beyond] to be understood. This whole chapter is a lesson given for the believers in every age to bring into their practical life. How fully is the science of saving, practical godliness defined! These verses, from 10 to 20 are of the greatest importance to be kept before the people to whom the message is to be borne. This lesson, verse 27, read and understand, also verse 28. Had we not better understand by practical purity and by possessing that faith that works by love and purifies the soul?

I felt so thankful when the college in Battle Creek was moved from there to Berrien Springs. This was a right move. If there had been a further carrying out of the principles that God has laid down—the instruction that He has given to make centers in many places—His salvation would have been revealed. A wrong policy has been followed in centering so much in Battle Creek. The Lord has told us that His work is to be established all over America. In every city a memorial for Him is to be established. Are we ready for this work? “Lo,” said Christ, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, speaking the things that I have commanded you.” [Matthew 28:20, 19.] We are to proclaim to all the world the truths by which every one is to be judged. If everyone feels the responsibility of giving the Word of God to the people; if every speaker knows that he has an angel right by his side, the word spoken, and the work done will prosper. Christ says, “You go out, and teach the words that I have commanded you;” and He tells them to baptize those that shall be converted. [Matthew 28:19, 20.] They are to go. No one is to be appointed to stay right in one place. But as they feel the burden of the work of God upon them, they are to go out; they are not to go to places where every one knows just as much of the truth as they know. They are to go to places where men know not the truth. They are to lay hold of souls, and in a wise and winning manner try to draw them to the truth. Now, that is the work that Christ gave His disciples. He commanded that they should teach those things that He has commanded them, and then He says, “Lo, I am with you”—now and then?—“always, even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.]

Suppose every teacher realized this. Suppose every teacher felt the accountability that is upon them before God. Those who are seeking to get an education in the places where schools are appointed—those students must be educated to carry with them that spirit that God said them might have. “Lo, I am with you.” [Verse 20.] Is He here in person today? I do not see Him. But I see Him by the eye of faith, or I would not be here. Then I am to realize that I am in the presence of the Lord God of hosts, that I am accountable for the words that I speak to the people. And so with every one who shall have a special work to do, whether he is a gospel medical missionary, or whether he is at the head of a sanitarium, it places every one in that particular position where he cannot afford to do a dishonest action.

Just before His ascension Christ gave His disciples their commission. “Go ye therefore,” He said, “and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] This commission is the great missionary charter of Christ’s kingdom. The disciples were to work earnestly for souls, raising up churches in every place. They were not to wait for the people to come to them; they were to go to them. They were to use every means in their power to gather in other workers.

Remember that we are the Lord’s heralds, His ambassadors. It is Christ who stands beside His messengers. “Go ye therefore and teach all nations,” He said to His disciples, “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

We do not propose to colonize, to build up strong centers to the neglect of other fields. But we are to enlarge the circle of our operations, as those who believe they are giving the last message of warning to the world, as Christ gave to His disciples just before His ascension (Matthew 28:19, 20; Mark 16:19, 20). God’s professed people in America should have been awake to do this work. In the place of centering so many interests in Battle Creek, plants should have been made in city after city. If they had been filled with zeal for the truth, they would have let their light shine to others, and would have labored to prepare a people to stand in the day of the Lord.

But we cannot act hastily. We must move steadily, in the power of the Lord Jesus that He promised to His disciples just before His ascension. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

Our work has been outlined. Over and over again we are to repeat the words of Christ: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] This commission is never to lose its force upon the minds of the believing people of God. Into the darkness of sin the light of truth is to shine forth, that the darkness may be expelled. Those who reflect light will receive more light to reflect. New power will be brought into the church.

A wonderful harvest of souls is to be gathered into the service of the Lord Jesus Christ, standing under the blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel. Let all labor as unto the Lord. As Christ’s representatives, there is need to guard carefully every word that falls from the lips. Remember the promise, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Every disciple is to advance in the knowledge of carrying the work of soul-saving on to a high level.

Christ and His complete righteousness as the Son of God—let this be our immovable platform, the very life of our faith and godliness. That which He taught we are to teach. There is not a zeal and earnestness. If the power of the Holy Spirit was upon you, you could no more be so content with unwarned neighbors all around you. I cannot see a man or woman in the street, but what I think, O, do they know the Lord is coming? As I ride on the cars through the cities I think: Have they been warned, has the light been shining into these cities that they shall have the truth? I think, if those fishermen could be called right from their fishing boats and set to work, the very same Jesus Christ calls, the very same teacher calls you to go. “Go,” He says, “teach them all that I have commanded you. And lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

We are to be consecrated channels through which the heavenly life is to flow to others. The Holy Spirit is to animate and pervade the whole church, purifying and cementing hearts. Those who have been buried with Christ is baptism are to rise to newness of life, giving a living representation of the life of Christ. The commission has been given to us. Upon us is laid a sacred charge. “Go then,” Christ says to them. “Make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded, and baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” “And lo,” He declared, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] You are dedicated to the work of making known the gospel of salvation. Heaven’s perfection is to be your power. As God’s followers, by converted lives, make known the power of His grace, a clear distinction is drawn between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not.

I have come to the narrative in our history when two buildings are now, through much labor, prepared to begin their work in Los Angeles and in Paradise Valley. These places need the very best kind of work done in them, and they can only be a success as their dependence is placed in the Lord God of Israel. We are now to feel that to us are committed the oracles of God, and we must make it our very first work to adorn the doctrine we claim to believe, with a well-ordered life and godly conversation. Self, yes, the self of every soul must no longer strive for the mastery. Christ’s character in us must appear as the one altogether perfect in every respect, and His children are to grow up into Christ their living Head. His mind must be revealed through the mind and behaviour of His witnesses. Self must be exercised in good works after the example given in the life of Christ. There is to be no striving for the mastery. Oh, how my mind is drawn out and exercised in regard to the work to be done! And if self will be hid with Christ in God, then all the pettishness of self will die, and Christ, with all the excellencies of His character, will be formed within, “the hope of glory.” [Colossians 1:27.] Holy angels in heaven are gazing with pitiful eyes upon the company of workers struggling among themselves to do something, but not laying hold of the One who declared in His resurrected body, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.]

Should we not see in the world today medical missionaries who in all the features of their work are worthy of the name they bear? who aspire to the doing of deeds worthy of valiant soldiers of Christ? We are living near the close of the great conflict, when many souls are to be rescued from the slavery of sin. We are living in a time when to Christ’s followers the promise specially belongs, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] He who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, He who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light bids us let our light shine brightly before men, that they may see our goods works, and glorify our Father who is in heaven. In such rich measure has light been given to God’s people that Christ is justified in telling them that they are to be the light of the world.—Unpublished MS. (Ms 134, 1903).

We feel sorry to have your wife in constant worriment and anxiety, but the Lord will not leave you. Jesus the precious Saviour will give you peace and the consolation of His Holy Spirit. Jesus, in giving His commission to His disciples, bade them go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to all nations, tongues, and people. From His divine lips came these words, “Lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]

We keep the Saviour too far apart from our lives. We want Him abiding with us as an honored, trusted Friend. We want to consult Him in all things. We want to tell Him all our trials and then let His peace into our souls, and let our joy be full as we contemplate that this Jesus is our Saviour, that He has said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Let the peace and joy of heaven into our hearts, and let them be expressed by our lips. Let us make melody to God, and the sunshine of heaven will be reflected to others around us.

If Christ is abiding in your heart, you will show meekness and gentleness and purity of thought. You will follow elevated, noble principles, because you have learned the lessons taught in the school of Christ. If you have not felt the need of learning every day in this school, it is time you did feel this need. Learn of Christ, and then go forth in the strength of Him who has said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] A divided heart God will not accept. Put your whole soul into your work, and never leave your work half done because you wish to go to another place. God will accept only faithful work. Reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and doctrine. Bind off your work thoroughly. Leave no dropped stitches for someone else to pick up. Do not disappoint Christ. Determine that you will succeed, and in the strength of Christ you may give full proof of your ministry.

Now, Christ left us His work when He went away, and He said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] We are not left alone in the hands of the devil. Do you think our heavenly Father would leave us alone to carry on the work of redemption and bringing up the fallen race, that He would leave us in a world flooded with evil with no help, no support, after He had endured the agonies of the cross? Do you think He will leave us now?—No! Says the Saviour, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” And again, “If I go away, I will come again.” [John 14:3.] “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” [Verse 14.] This is on the condition that we keep His commandments. Is not this a blessed promise? Why do we not talk of it more and praise God for it? Here are the precious promises of the Word of God to us, and why do we not take them?

God will be with you if you will be with Him. Take care that you do not leave a wrong impression upon minds in reference to yourself, and be thought to be what you are not, and thus fail to do that good which you might, because you do not put the courtesy, the fragrance, and the concentrating of your ideas into the work when others plan and others devise, but when you lead then you have spirit and life. Look carefully at these things; study them. Do not cease your efforts to reform. God help you to be what He would have you to be. Our prejudices, our weaknesses, our self-deceptions, and our ignorance often prompt us to say and do things which ought not to be said or done, and the brother laborer whom God is moving upon to work is pricked at his way. If left to our own selves we would miss our way. We need the cloudy pillar to lead us constantly. Out of weakness they would become strong; for they would be doers of the work. They would hear the voice of Jesus: “Lo! One who died for the recovery of the world? Have you not a sufficiency? Is not He your counselor? and is He not devising fresh methods for the saving of the souls for whom He died? While we are His instruments to seek and save the lost, we must permit the work of saving to rest on our Saviour. While in your prayers you present the great want of souls before the world’s Redeemer, commit both yourself and them to Him as His own purchased possession.
