The parting words of the Saviour to His early disciples should speak encouragement to every servant of God till the close of time. “Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain, where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth; go ye therefore and teach all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:16-20.]

22LtMs, Ms 119, 1907, par. 6

What greater assurance than this can we ask? We have the Lord’s positive assurance that while we instruct others, He will be with us to be our Instructor. Those who work for God will meet with discouragement, but the promise is always theirs, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.] God will give a most wonderful experience to those who will say, “I believe Thy promise; I will not fail nor become discouraged.” [See Isaiah 42:4.]

In connection with this, let us read Christ’s great commission to His disciples: “Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. ... And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:16-20.

After His resurrection Christ made an appointment for the disciples to meet Him in Galilee. “And when they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted.” [Matthew 28:17.] There will always be some who will cherish unbelief and leaven other minds. Christ spoke with assurance and authority, saying, “All power is given unto me in heaven and on earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Verses 18-20.]

Shall we not strive to use to the very best of our ability the little time that is left in this life, adding grace to grace, power to power, making it manifest that we have a source of power in the heavens above? Christ says: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). What is this power given to Him for? For us. He desires us to realize that He has returned to heaven as our Elder Brother and that the measureless power given Him has been placed at our disposal....

What an honor He confers upon us, in urging us to be holy in our sphere, as the Father is holy in His sphere. And through His power we are able to do this; for He declares, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). This unlimited power it is your privilege and mine to claim.44Our High Calling, 108.

Christ said: “No man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him” (Matthew 11:27). O how dimly the exalted work of the Son of God is comprehended! He held the salvation of the world in His hands. The commission given to the apostles is also given to His followers in this age. “Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47). Our Saviour has “all power in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18), and this power is promised unto us. “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

DA 24.3

By His humanity, Christ touched humanity; by His divinity, He lays hold upon the throne of God. As the Son of man, He gave us an example of obedience; as the Son of God, He gives us power to obey. It was Christ who from the bush on Mount Horeb spoke to Moses saying, “I AM THAT I AM.... Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” Exodus 3:14. This was the pledge of Israel’s deliverance. So when He came “in the likeness of men,” He declared Himself the I AM. The Child of Bethlehem, the meek and lowly Saviour, is God “manifest in the flesh.” 1 Timothy 3:16. And to us He says: “I AM the Good Shepherd.” “I AM the living Bread.” “I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” John 10:11; 6:51; 14:6; Matthew 28:18. I AM the assurance of every promise. I AM; be not afraid. “God with us” is the surety of our deliverance from sin, the assurance of our power to obey the law of heaven.

Chapter 32—The Centurion

DA 319.1

He who stood beside the sorrowing mother at the gate of Nain, watches with every mourning one beside the bier. He is touched with sympathy for our grief. His heart, that loved and pitied, is a heart of unchangeable tenderness. His word, that called the dead to life, is no less efficacious now than when spoken to the young man of Nain. He says, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” Matthew 28:18. That power is not diminished by the lapse of years, nor exhausted by the ceaseless activity of His overflowing grace. To all who believe on Him He is still a living Saviour.

Chapter 83—The Walk to Emmaus

DA 800.1

Thus Christ discoursed to His disciples, opening their minds that they might understand the Scriptures. The disciples were weary, but the conversation did not flag. Words of life and assurance fell from the Saviour’s lips. But still their eyes were holden. As He told them of the overthrow of Jerusalem, they looked upon the doomed city with weeping. But little did they yet suspect who their traveling companion was. They did not think that the subject of their conversation was walking by their side; for Christ referred to Himself as though He were another person. They thought that He was one of those who had been in attendance at the great feast, and who was now returning to his home. He walked as carefully as they over the rough stones, now and then halting with them for a little rest. Thus they proceeded along the mountainous road, while the One who was soon to take His position at God’s right hand, and who could say, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth,” walked beside them. Matthew 28:18.

The Upward Look

The Great Medical Missionary, August 3

UL 229.5

This work Christ did to show men that He was the tabernacle of witness; that the Word had been made flesh. In the human encampment, amongst the erring and sinful, Christ pitched His tent. He lived close to the poor and the lowly, yet He was the King of glory. He would make all familiar with His character, that we might be partakers of the divine nature, and thus become one with Him in faith and practice. He declares, “All things are delivered unto me of my Father” (chap. 11:27). “All things that the Father hath are mine” (John 16:15). “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). Why was this wonderful transfer made but that Christ might be the world’s Redeemer, the incarnate Saviour! ... The great Teacher, while on this earth, gave His whole life to teach us how to work as devoted, consecrated missionaries for God.—Letter 281, August 3, 1904, to Dr. W. H. Riley.

Jesus declares, “All things are delivered unto me of my Father; all things that the Father hath are mine.” “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 11:27; 28:18.] What for? That He may give gifts unto men; that He may lay all His powers under tribute to make known the wondrous love wherewith He hath loved us. Oh, what treasures of knowledge and experience you both might have obtained if, instead of consecrating your lives to self-worship, the worship of one another, you had left these idolatrous shrines [to] worship at the holy shrine of God. What contemplations you might have had, what conceptions of the character of God! What earnestness, what zeal you might have manifested! Christ has every agency arranged to bring back the world to loyalty to God through the union of the divine influence with the human sanctified agency. He is full of grace and truth. “All power,” He claims, “is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] The treasures so abundant in heaven are to be brought down to earth. The angels look with amazement upon men who will not be influenced by all the agencies brought under tribute to Jesus Christ through His dying upon the cross that all men may be saved—and yet they will not be saved. Christ has invested His church with the most abundant capabilities and divine power to be workers together with God to draw the world to Christ by representing the attributes of Christ’s character.

What can we ask for more than that? Christ has declared, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] When God gave His Son, He gave all heaven in one gift; He exhausted all He had. He gave His Son to die for the penalty of the law transgressed. And when you gather about the throne of God in the judgment, when the cross of Calvary shall there be made to appear as it is, it will be enough to condemn every soul who has transgressed. He has shown the value of the law, that its claims are everlasting upon man. Could God have changed one jot or tittle to meet man in his fallen condition, then Christ need not have died. But because He could not, Christ had to die; He became man’s sacrifice, his penalty. He opened His bosom to take the arrows of [Satan] that man might be saved.

Man is enabled to discern the Saviour, and by beholding he is changed into the likeness of His character. Will you come just as you are, and pray in faith to be healed of all manner of diseases, of all maladies which afflict the soul and the body? I want it understood: Those who have been connected with the work of largest importance in our world have been terribly blinded. The Word does not set the boundary to man’s activity and his progress, but the right way is put before him in distinction from the wrong. The prevailing iniquities surrounding the Christian are to be shunned. There is God’s call and the devil’s call, he professing to be as God. Will the still, small voice calling, attracting, inviting, “Come unto me, take my yoke upon you,” be heard? [Matthew 11:28, 29.] Will the many exciting enterprises and selfish, ambitious pursuits in every branch of business lead us to run after the evil in the place of choosing the good? All who have received the endowment of God from on high will have their eyes fixed on the Captain of their salvation, and will advance. As Christ walks, they will walk. Confidence placed in man will prove a snare. He who sets the Lord ever before him will be sustained by Him who hath said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.]

In giving Christ, God gave all the facilities of heaven. His pledges of help are made to every troubled soul. Christ has won the victory over the enemy; and in every conflict with the powers of darkness we have the assurance of His pledge, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] The Lord God of heaven “hath put all things under” Christ’s “feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all.” [Ephesians 1:22, 23.]

Christ has a claim on all in this world. “All things are delivered unto Me of My Father,” He said. “All things that the Father hath are Mine.” “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 11:27; John 16:15; Matthew 28:18.] All in heaven and in earth is at His service. The great gift of heavenly love was not to be shut up in the bosom of the Father. It was given to Christ, to give to needy human beings.

Then the apostle set before them the great truths that are the foundation of the Christian’s hope. He told them of Christ’s life on this earth and of His cruel death of shame. He told them how the Lord of life had broken the barriers of the tomb and risen triumphant over death. He repeated the Saviour’s commission to His disciples: “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Matthew 28:18, 19. He told them also of Christ’s promise to send the Comforter, through whose power mighty signs and wonders would be wrought, and he described how gloriously this promise had been fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost.

Let us begin to work for those who have not had the light. “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth,” the Saviour declares, “and, lo, I am with you alway.” Matthew 28:18, 20. What we need is a living faith, faith to proclaim over the rent sepulcher of Joseph that we have a living Saviour, one who will go before us and who will work with us. God will do the work if we will furnish Him the instruments. There needs to be among us a great deal more of prayer and much less of unbelief. We need to lift up the standard higher and still higher before the people. We need to remember that Christ is always at our right hand as we proclaim liberty to the captives and deal the bread of life to hungry souls. When we keep before our minds the urgency and importance of our work, the salvation of God will be revealed in a remarkable manner.

With outstretched hands He blessed them before He was taken up to join the glorious angels waiting to escort Him on His upward way.

Do you suppose that after Christ gave His precious life to redeem the beings He created He would fail to give them sufficient power to enable them to overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony? He has power to save every individual. At the time of His ascension He said, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). For our redemption all power is given to Him who stood at the head of humanity. For nearly six weeks the Sinless One fought a battle with the powers of darkness in the wilderness of temptation, overcoming not on His account, but on our account, thus making it possible for every son and daughter of Adam to overcome through the merit of His sinlessness.

This was the only interview Jesus had with many of them before His ascension. He came and spake to them, saying, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] The disciples had worshiped Him before He spoke, but His words, falling from lips that had been closed in death, thrilled with the peculiar power. He was now the risen Saviour. They had seen Him exercise His power in healing the sick and controlling satanic agencies. They believed that He possessed power to set up His kingdom in Jerusalem, power to quell all opposition, power over the elements of nature. He had stilled the angry waters; He had walked upon the white-crested billows. He had raised the dead to life. Now he claims that “all power” is given to Him. His words carried the minds of the people above earthly and temporal things to the heavenly and eternal. They were lifted from the lower to the highest conception of His dignity and glory. Every word spoken by Him was as heavenly music in their ears.

12LtMs, Ms 138, 1897, par. 5

“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” [Verse 18.] This power was given Him by the Father. In His life and character He had magnified and highly exalted the law. It was not relaxed one iota to reconcile man to God. Instead of annulling the law by His death, Christ showed its immutability and changeless character. But through Christ’s sacrifice a way was prepared for the fallen race to receive pardon. All who are made partakers of His divine nature will be crowned with honor and glory with Him. By the suffering of the Son of God, who bore the penalty of transgression, it was made possible for the minds of repentant sinners to be elevated and made loyal. Through His power they may be brought to the divine level, into sanctified and holy surrender to the mind of God. This is Christ’s work. This is why He died for a guilty world.

12LtMs, Ms 138, 1897, par. 7

The Father loved His Son in His abasement. Through all Christ’s humiliation, God’s love knew no variableness neither shadow of turning. Now Christ had conquered. Now He could say to His disciples, “All power is given unto me.” [Verse 18.] Thus the divine Teacher’s truth and love and goodness were pledged to those who receive Him. This is the assurance that His power will be exercised forever in behalf of those who believe in Him as their Lord and their Redeemer.

12LtMs, Ms 138, 1897, par. 8

Christ’s words on the mountainside were the announcement that His sacrifice in behalf of man was full and complete. The conditions of the atonement had been fulfilled; the work for which He came to this world had been accomplished. He had won the kingdom. He had wrested it from Satan, and had become heir of all things. He was on His way to the throne of God, to be honored by angels, principalities, and powers. He had entered upon His mediatorial work. Clothed with boundless authority, He gave His commission to the disciples, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Verses 18-20.]

12LtMs, Ms 138, 1897, par. 23

“All power is given unto me, in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] Christ has every resource at His command, and He is willing and rejoices to give His blessings to those that appreciate them. He knows that His followers need His love, His care, His grace, His righteousness, in order correctly to represent Him in character. The power He gave His disciples made their calling of men to repentance a success. The Holy Spirit can use consecrated men, and the Lord Jesus, full of mercy, tenderness, and love, shows His perfect willingness to forgive transgressions and sins if men will accept the conditions—repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

The true beauty of the soul is found in obedience to the will of God. Adam and Eve’s disobedience in a very small matter lost Eden to them. God’s commands are for the regulation of the human heart. If we observe them, our lives will be lives of obedience because we love Jesus. “Ye are my friends,” He said, “if ye do whatsoever I command you.” [John 15:14.] Enoch was a friend of God, and he walked with God. Christ’s followers will esteem every precept He has given them to be right. They have the guarantee, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]

Canvasser-evangelists are needed to hunt and fish for souls. The canvassing work should now be earnestly and decidedly taken up. The canvasser whose heart is meek and lowly and humble can accomplish much good. Going out two and two, canvassers can reach a class that cannot be reached by our camp-meetings. From family to family they carry the message of truth. Thus they come into close touch with the people and find many opportunities to speak of the Saviour. Let them sing and pray with those who become interested in the truths they have to give. Let them speak to families the words of Christ. They may expect success; for theirs is the promise, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Canvassers who go forth in the spirit of the Master have the companionship of heavenly beings.

Those in the darkness of error are the purchase of the blood of Christ. They are the fruit of His suffering, and they are to be labored for. Let our canvassers know that it is for the advancement of Christ’s kingdom that they are laboring. He will teach them as they go forth to their God-appointed work, to warn the world of a soon-coming judgment. Accompanied by the power of persuasion, the power of prayer, the power of the love of God, the evangelist’s work will not, cannot be without fruit. Think of the interest that the Father and the Son have in this work. As the Father loves the Son, so the Son loves those that are His, those who work as He worked to save perishing souls. None need feel that they are powerless; for Christ declares, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] He has promised that He will give this power to His workers. His power is to become their power. They are to link their souls with God. Christ desires all to enjoy the wealth of His grace, which is beyond all computation. It is limitless, exhaustless. It is ours by eternal covenant if we will be workers together with God. It is ours if we will unite with Him to bring many sons and daughters to God.

God calls upon His people everywhere to awake and arouse to action. Let no one prescribe the great and solemn work that is to be done. Those who have been entrusted with the talent of means are to bear in mind that this talent is the Lord’s, to be used in the work of proclaiming the message to every kindred and nation and tongue and people. Then let God’s people accept their privilege of uniting with Him in the work that waits to be done, and claim the fulfilment of His promise, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]

The Lord has a great work to be done in our world, and how shall this work be accomplished? The work of redemption, who can fathom it? Matthew 28:18, 20. The accomplishment of this great work means everything to true believers. The low standard of spirituality the church [members] allow themselves to be in [in] religious attainments is dishonoring to the kingdom of God. They show they have a name to live and are dead. This low, feeble standard if a reproach to Christianity, a great dishonor to God, for it is so much less in comparison with the great provision made in behalf of the saving of the world.

Man cannot by any human effort thwart the purposes of God. “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” “There are many devices in a man’s heart, nevertheless the counsel of the heart that shall stand.” [Proverbs 16:9; 19:21.] “All power is given unto Me .... MR No. 817—What Being Saved Means

10MR 290.1

What Being Saved Means—“All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). This power was given Him by the Father. In His life and character He had magnified and highly exalted the law. It was not relaxed one iota to reconcile man to God. Instead of annulling the law by His death, Christ showed its immutability and changeless character. But through Christ’s sacrifice a way was prepared for the fallen race to receive pardon. All who are made partakers of His divine nature will be crowned in honor and glory with Him.

10MR 291.3

The true beauty of the soul is found in obedience to the will of God. Adam and Eve’s disobedience in a very small matter lost Eden to them. God’s commands are for the regulation of the human heart. If we observe them, our lives will be lives of obedience because we love Jesus. “Ye are My friends,” He said, “if ye do whatsoever I command you” (John 15:14). Enoch was a friend of God, and he walked with God. Christ’s followers will esteem every precept He has given them to be right. They have the guarantee, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20).—Manuscript 138, 1897, 2, 3, 9, 10. (“The Gospel Message,” December 2, 1897.)

The commission of Christ to His disciples is the great missionary charter of His kingdom. His disciples were thus made His ambassadors, bearing the divine credentials. If they should be asked by what authority they, unlearned fishermen, went forth as teachers of the people and healers of the sick, they could make reply, “He who was crucified, but who rose again, has appointed us to preach His gospel, to be ministers of His Word. He has declared, ‘All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.’” [Matthew 28:18.]

23LtMs, Lt 330, 1908, par. 15

Christ bids us to go into all parts of the world, but only as we know that His presence is with us. We are to labor in meekness and humility. The lapse of time has brought no change either in the commission of Christ or to His parting promise, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Those who will not swell to large proportions, but will put their trust and confidence in Christ may claim the promise, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” [Hebrews 13:5.]

I am charged with a message to you, my son. Do not try to do so much that you are always in a hurry, and weariness leads to impatience and discouragement. Fight, my son, fight with all the power that God has provided for you against the enemy. Satan’s agents are industriously trying to get professing Christians to speak unadvisedly. When they succeed, Satan exults, because God’s followers have hurt their influence. But we need not be overcome by the enemy. The Prince of heaven is on our side. He gives us the assurance, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

Were it not for the power received through Christ, we would have no strength. But Christ has all power. “Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] Here is our power, our comfort. Of ourselves, we have no strength. But He says, “I am with you alway,” helping you to perform your duty, guiding, comforting, sanctifying, and sustaining you, giving you success in speaking words that will draw the attention of others to Christ and awaken in their minds the desire to understand the hope and meaning of the truth, turning them from darkness to light and from the power of sin to God.

It is a wonderful thought that human beings can speak the word of God in simple words of comfort and encouragement. The humblest instruments will be used of God to sow the seeds of truth, which may spring up and bear fruit, because the one in whose heart they were sown needed help—a kind thought, a kind word, made effective by the One who has said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.]

Today the truth is to be proclaimed as Christ proclaimed it when He was on this earth. Our people who are so collected together at large centers should be out in the field working for souls. They should go to places where the truth has not yet been heard, and pray and plan and work, and gain an experience by practical work. Is not Christ in our world today as verily as He was then? Can He not heal the sick as well now as then? Let small sanitariums and treatment rooms be established, and let people be given an education in the simple methods of treating disease. Those who take up this work will increase in capability; for unseen heavenly agencies will be present to help them. “Lo, I am with you always,” Christ declares, “even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.]

20LtMs, Lt 43, 1905, par. 9

Is not this, then, the work that is to be undertaken, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth? Disease can be cured if right methods are employed. We are now to move forward in earnest, heeding the words of Christ, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” [Verse 20.] Our highest aim is to be to heed and obey the teachings of the One who gave His life for the world. Far-fetched suppositions are not needed. There is to be no lording it over God’s heritage, as there has been in the past. Those who are burdened with a desire to proclaim the message are not to be bound about. They are not to be required to place themselves under the control of any man’s ideas or plans. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind, and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.” [James 1:5-7.]

Bitter and relentless will be our enemies; nevertheless, we are to do the work given us. If we are making the life and teachings of Christ our study, every passing event will furnish a text for an impressive discourse. It was thus the Saviour preached the gospel in the highways and byways; and as He spoke, the little group that listened to Him swelled to a great company. Present-day evangelists are to be workers together with Christ. These, just as verily as the first disciples, have the assurance: “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. [Matthew 28:19.] There is a promise for us in His assurance, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.” [Verse 18.] Brethren, shall we not take up our work, not seeking to carry burdens which the Lord has not committed to us, but doing that to which we are called with a spirit of thoroughness, earnestness, and willingness? If we do our work faithfully, the Lord will complete His part of the contract, fulfilling the promise of His presence, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.] Let us not allow our faith to waver, but putting our dependence in God, let us “teach all things whatsoever He hath commanded.” [Verse 20.] Day by day we need to receive divine instruction. I pray that every laborer may ask, and believe, and receive.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Matthew 28:18-20.

TDG 107.4

Christ’s last words to His disciples show the importance to be placed on the work of spreading the truth. Just before His ascension He gave them the commission, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (chap. 28:19, 20).

The great tendency of the human heart is to depart from God and to make flesh its arm. Those who are daily seeking to perfect a Christian character will look to Christ for their example and their counsel. When, after His resurrection, Christ outlined to His disciples their work as His representatives, He said, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

The Saviour has given the promise of His presence to all who labor in the spirit of true service. “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth,” He says; “go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] As you present the Word to your hearers, claim this promise of Christ’s presence. There is no day, no hour of the day, when He will not be near you by His Holy Spirit. He is in every meeting that is held in His name. His promise is given for as long as time shall last.

In visions of the night I was given a view of the present situation. One of authority stood in our midst; and as He looked upon teachers and students, He said, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth; go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

Matthew’s record of the great commission is: “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] There is no limit to the missionary work to be done in fulfilling this commission, and yet because of a lack of faith on the part of God’s people, the work has often come almost to a standstill. The lack of any record of work accomplished in some lands testifies to the fact that many of those who have claimed to believe the truth have not revealed their faith by their works. If God’s people had possessed the true missionary spirit, the lands lying in darkness would ere this have been enlightened by their self-sacrificing labors. Our publications would have been multiplied, and this literature circulated, and the message of truth would have gone forth with no uncertain sound. This message which God bids us carry to all parts of the world is His last message of mercy to a perishing race.

22LtMs, Ms 145, 1907, par. 10

A similar work will be done for us in the giving of the last message to the world. Angels of God will go with us, Christ will be our chief Teacher, and right ways will be opened before us. Never are we to lose sight of our commission, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] In order to follow this divine instruction, there needs to be thorough consecration to God. The heart of the worker must seek wisdom from God; he must make God his dependence and improve every advantage given him.

The workers in our sanitariums should understand that each has an individual work. Each should realize his duty to keep his soul and body under discipline to the great Physician, who gave His life to rescue us from the control of a powerful foe. After He had burst the fetters of the tomb, He said to His disciples, “I am the resurrection and the life.” [John 11:25.] And before He ascended to heaven He declared, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

22LtMs, Lt 56, 1907, par. 8

A wonderful responsibility rests upon those connected with the sanitariums established in His name for the treatment of the sick. This is to be done without the use of poisonous drugs. Those who become workers in the sanitarium are to believe the words of Christ, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.] Those who have the fear of God in the heart will cultivate a sweet disposition. Forbearance and courtesy will be manifested in the life. Duties will be faithfully discharged, and in a way that will not leave a disagreeable impression on the minds of the sick or the well.

22LtMs, Lt 56, 1907, par. 10

In your care of the sick, act tenderly, kindly, faithfully, that you may have a converting influence upon them. You have need of the grace of Christ in order to properly represent the service of Christ. And as you present the grace of truth in true, disinterested service, angels will be present to sustain you. The Comforter will be with you to fulfil the promise of the Saviour, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.]

I lay this matter before you. There is so much means that is used for self-indulgence, to no benefit to the one who has the means and no benefit to those who are receiving, but not imparting. We must give these men and women an opportunity to help us. We are sustaining missionary work in nearly all parts of our world. We do not leave the nonreligious, but have sustained them. But here are necessities right at home, neglected. The commission has been given by the first great Missionary to our world, in (Matthew 28:18-20): “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”

23LtMs, Ms 136, 1908, par. 5

Now this work we are trying to do. This promise has sustained the self-denying, self-sacrificing workings in all parts of the world. The Lord will sustain in doing His work. “Teach all nations” is the command; proclaim to them the gospel. [Verse 19.] The presentation of Bible truth is to go to all cities and countries, awakening the sinners. All people are to have the gospel message, and Christ declares, “I am with you in this work, to guide, comfort, and sanctify to the very close of this earth’s history.” At our large gatherings, in camp-meetings, and in our institutions we are to bear in mind the commission. We have a worldwide message.

These, just as verily as the first disciples, have the assurance, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth; go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

The Spirit of the Lord rested upon me and was revealed in the words that were given me to speak. I asked those present who felt the urgency of the Spirit of God, and who pledged themselves to live the truth and to teach the truth to others, and to work for their salvation, to make it manifest by rising to their feet. I was surprised to see the whole congregation rise. I then asked all to kneel down, and I sent up my petition to heaven for that people. I was deeply impressed by this experience. I felt the deep moving of the Spirit of God upon me, and I know that the Lord gave me a special message for His people at this time. I realized that I had with me the presence of Him whom the Jews took and crucified, but who rose from the dead and declared to His followers, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. I want you to think of the commission given to the disciples by Christ just before His ascension. “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth,” He said. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] I see distinctly that our ministering brethren need to reach a high standard. They are not to listen to the evil things said of their brethren in any place until they first talk with those spoken against to learn whether the reports are just or most cruelly unjust. But there are those who do not follow this course. They believe the disparaging things said of their fellow workers and tell them from place to place all over the field. Thus impressions that are false in every respect are left on minds.

Here is brought to view the change that must take place in the heart. And “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The Scriptures are the great agency in this transformation. Christ prayed, “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth” [John 17:17]. In this great work we are laborers together with God. With the divine agency there is to be the cooperation of the human instrument. To each of His followers Christ says, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” [Matthew 28:18-20].

[Verse 19.] His first act in heaven corresponded with His expressed will on the earth. His Holy Spirit was sent to them in rich abundance. The heavenly endowment was given. We know the apostles commenced their work in Jerusalem; three thousand were converted in a day.

Christ is called the minister of the true tabernacle. He is the head of His church on earth. He declares, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:18-20). He is the minister of the true tabernacle, and He is constantly sending messages to His people. The rich nutriment of sound doctrine will be given to all true laborers. Christ’s faithful ambassadors will be taught of God in every sermon that speaks truth to the heart. Christ is indeed the minister of holy things in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched and not man.

Christ said to His disciples, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” [Mark 16:15.] He said, “All power is mine.” “Go, and you shall gain an experience; for you move under the shield of Omnipotence: Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] These precious words, followed by His blessing, made a lasting impression upon the minds of those who were holding in trust the gospel of salvation. The Holy Spirit was the legacy which Christ left them when He ascended on high. As their Advocate on high, He petitions that His disciples should be endowed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Christ engages to use men as His instrumentalities. He takes the whole matter into His own hands, and all He asks is the co-operation of the human agent. We are to do His work in His own appointed way, manifesting supreme love to God, and loving the human family as Christ has loved them. We are to live for Christ, to be constantly watching, waiting, praying, and working. We are to walk by faith and not by sight, looking unto Jesus, who is the Author and Finisher of our faith.

If men in humble life had been encouraged to do all the good that they could do, if men had not laid restraining hands upon them, and continually repressed their zeal, there would now be a hundred workers where there is one. The one who loves Christ the most will do the greatest amount of good. We have a large work to do for the Master in new and untried places, but if we will move in faith, trusting in God, we shall find that Jesus will be the Chief Workman. He has taken upon Himself the responsibility of our success. Christ’s last words to His disciples, who were depositaries for His truth, was to be conveyed to all the world. He said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” [Verses 19, 20.]

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] While these words were upon His lips, He ascended, a cloud of angels received Him, and escorted Him to the city of God. The disciples returned to Jerusalem, knowing now for a certainty that Jesus was the Son of God. Their faith was unclouded, and they waited, preparing themselves by prayer and by humbling their hearts before God, until the baptism of the Holy Spirit came.

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” [Mark 16:15.] Again and again the words are repeated, that they may not lose their significance. Upon all creatures under heaven, high and low, rich and poor, was the light of heaven to shine in clear strong rays. The disciples were to be co-laborers with Him, their Redeemer, in the work of saving the world. Christ assured them “all power is given unto me in heaven and earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] They were to go forth in His name, and He promised them the ministry of His Spirit. He did not lay before them a plain and easy path. They were to be partakers of His sufferings. But He told them of the legacy they would receive. If they united with each other and with Him, His righteousness would shine upon them, and from them to a world constantly increasing in wickedness.

Look to the source of all strength for perfection of understanding. “All power is given unto me in heaven and earth,” said Christ. [Matthew 28:18.] If God withheld not His only begotten Son, but gave Him up to death that man might be restored to the image of the Creator, how much more will He not, with Him, freely give us all things?

There are others who have not realized that they needed to behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. These become interested, inspired with hope. They believe in the One who said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] He fills their souls with His grace, and how precious to them does the light appear. How different are their attitude and words from the attitude and words of the scorner of grace. They understand the meaning of the words, The entrance of thy word giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. They eat the bread that comes down from heaven. They are surprised that their companions turn from precious truth, which is such a valued treasure to them. Even in the infancy of their experience they see that their companions use every device to turn souls away from hearing the word of life. If these scorners see any one inquiring in concern, What shall I do to be saved, they make light of his convictions, and try by every false method to hinder him from seeking the truth as hidden treasure.

Angels are sent to minister to those who shall be heirs of salvation. Could the eyes of God’s children be opened, they would see from how many evils they have been saved, from how many perils they have escaped. “Lo, I am with you alway,” Christ says, “even unto the end of the world.” [Verse 20.] You may be taken by councils, and accused and condemned by the men chosen to administer justice; but who are themselves trampling under foot the highest of all laws, even the law of Jehovah. “But be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.]

If we only believed, there would be less need for <so many> council meetings and committee meetings. If we prayed in faith and took God at His word, He would work for us.

The indifference among our ministers in regard to health reform and medical missionary work is surprising. Even those who do not profess to be Christians treat the subject with a greater reverence than do some of our own people, and they are going in advance of us. The word given to me for you is, “Go forward.” “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. In Christ’s work preaching the gospel and healing the sick were bound together. Thus we are to work today. Those who obtain a knowledge of medical missionary work need to connect this work with the proclamation of the last message of mercy. The ministry must be sustained. Christ declared, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] The worker is to obtain a deep and earnest religious experience. He is to seek the Lord by faith. Then by healing the sick and casting out devils the Holy Spirit will show that there is a power in the gospel commission.

Here is brought to view the change that must take place in the heart. And “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” [Romans 10:17.] The Scriptures are the great agency in this transformation. Christ prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] In this great work we are laborers together with God. With the divine agency there is to be the co-operation of the human instrument. To each of His followers Christ says, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

As men and women who profess godliness, are we obeying the Word of God? Is the leaven of truth hidden in the heart, working in the character, and conforming the entire being to the will and ways of God? Our churches need the converting power of God. The leaven of evil which works in disobedience and denial of the truth must be eradicated, and the leaven of the Word of God implanted in the heart. This will work with its vital properties, restoring the lost image of God in man. And, the transformation having taken place through the leaven of truth, a work is entrusted to us. Christ commissions us, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]

All that men enjoy they receive from the Lord’s great firm, and He is pleased to have His heritage enjoy His goods; but with all who stand under the bloodstained banner of Prince Emmanuel He has made a special contract that they show their dependence upon God and their accountability to Him by returning to the treasury a certain portion as His own. This is to be invested in supporting the missionary work which must be done to fulfill the commission given by the Son of God just before He left His disciples: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations.” “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature,” “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15.]

He who gave commandment in the New Testament is the One also who gave the instruction contained in the Old Testament. The formation of the Christian church, and the union of all that it embraces, and preserving the consecration of all its powers as the appointed agencies of God, for the spiritual recovery of the moral image of God in man, was the object of Christ’s assuming human nature. Christ was the foundation of the whole Jewish economy, which was the symbol prescribed in type for the religious faith and obedience of all people. The Lord is not pleased with the indifference in recognizing the sacredness of the service of God, when the sample of what a church should be in all its instrumentality, its entire consecration in service, with a decided spirituality and zeal and exactitude in all service concerning the worship of God and exalted religious privileges, are to be treated in far greater reverence in all service; since we have the example of the great Founder of all the religious economy, should not we as a Christian people, in all our religious Christian worship, take in the lessons given and express a greater devotedness, which God requires in all who believe in Christ as type has met antitype in the giving of Himself to die on Calvary’s cross? His resurrection from the dead, His full and ample promise to His disciples just before His ascension to heaven escorted by the heavenly throng in triumph to the city of God, we now have assurance of a living Saviour, our Advocate in the heavenly courts, and the promise made (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20; Luke 24:44-53).

We must not lay snares for the feet of anyone, but we must make straight paths for our feet, lest the lame be turned out of the way. A crown of life for the overcomer. A crown of life for the victor. Do you want to be victors? Do you want to be victors in the war? Well then, let us begin just now.
