The stewards of God have nothing to fear if they do their duty in appropriating the means entrusted to them. Christ has made ample provision for the ignorant, the poor, the down trodden. They are the objects of His mercy and eternal love. The apportioning of rewards at the last day turns upon the question of our practical benevolence: “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” [Matthew 25:40.] Christ puts Himself in the poor man’s place, identifying His interest with that of the poor. “For I was an hungered and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.” [Verses 42, 43.] He calls upon each disciple to dispense with grateful liberality the gifts entrusted to him, as if he were bestowing the same upon his Redeemer.Matthew 25:40-45

Some have been placed in leading positions in the church who have received an education that was continually unfitting them to enter that city whose builder and maker is God. The medical fraternity, I have seen, was sick and needed a physician higher than any earthly skill can furnish to heal them of their wrong transactions. The record book in heaven will tell every transaction. I now, as God’s servant, tell you to break up your relationship with Dr. Kellogg. If possible, take your wife and family and move to California. But do not sell your soul to do an unfair action. All connected with that sanitarium in Mexico is wrapped up in papers that no one will want to bring to light; and there are many such things that have been done that God has condemned. Read Micah 6. This chapter testifies the mind of God. I shall only warn you to be guarded. If you have placed things in an uncertain light to do injustice to one soul, the Lord Jesus says, “Ye have done it unto Me in the person of my saints.” [See Matthew 25:40, 45.] We are now brought into terrible perplexities. Sanitarium after sanitarium has become loaded down with debts. Shall these institutions [be] tied up with the commercial work brought in so largely of the food enterprise? God did not place this upon Dr. Kellogg, and his mixing in this matter has been a mistake. His work, the Lord had signified, was to act as His physician. As a physician he was not to embrace such commercial business. The Lord is not honored or glorified. The Holy Spirit of God is misrepresented, and I am so sorry. May the Lord God reveal Himself and place His stamp so definitely upon that which is right that Dr. [Kellogg] will come to his senses is my prayer.Matthew 25:41

PP 469.2
The infinite love of God has been manifested in the gift of His only-begotten Son to redeem a lost race. Christ came to the earth to reveal to men the character of His Father, and His life was filled with deeds of divine tenderness and compassion. And yet Christ Himself declares, “Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law.” Matthew 5:18. The same voice that with patient, loving entreaty invites the sinner to come to Him and find pardon and peace, will in the judgment bid the rejecters of His mercy, “Depart from Me, ye cursed.” Matthew 25:41. In all the Bible, God is represented not only as a tender father but as a righteous judge. Though He delights in showing mercy, and “forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,” yet He “will by no means clear the guilty.” Exodus 34:7.The Upward Look

I will not write more on this subject at this time. But I entreat that there may be a putting away from the life every action which does not bear the approval of God. We are drawing near to the close of earth’s history; the battle is growing daily more fierce. There is a day appointed when men who have bowed to the mandates of Satan will find themselves the subjects of the wrath of God, when the Judge of all the earth shall pronounce the sentence against Satan and his adherents, “Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” [Matthew 25:41.]Matthew 25:41-45

In the last great day we shall be judged in accordance with what we have done. Christ will say, “I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?” (Matthew 25:42-44). Christ will then say, “Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me” (verse 45). And Christ will say, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” (verse 41).Matthew 25:41-46

Sinners, who are perishing for lack of knowledge, must be left in ignorance and darkness unless men carry to them the light of truth. God will not send angels from heaven to do the work which He has left for man to do. He has given all a work to do, for the very reason that He might prove them and that they might reveal their true character. Christ places the poor among us as His representatives. “I was anhungered,” He says, “and ye gave Me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave Me no drink.” Matthew 25:42. Christ identifies Himself with suffering humanity in the persons of the suffering children of men. He makes their necessities His own and takes to His bosom their woes.Matthew 25:42-43

Chapter 22—Dress
MH 287.4
In the professed Christian world enough is expended for jewels and needlessly expensive dress to feed all the hungry and to clothe the naked. Fashion and display absorb the means that might comfort the poor and the suffering. They rob the world of the gospel of the Saviour’s love. Missions languish. Multitudes perish for want of Christian teaching. Beside our own doors and in foreign lands the heathen are untaught and unsaved. While God has laden the earth with His bounties and filled its storehouses with the comforts of life, while He has so freely given to us a saving knowledge of His truth, what excuse can we offer for permitting the cries of the widow and the fatherless, the sick and the suffering, the untaught and the unsaved, to ascend to heaven? In the day of God, when brought face to face with Him who gave His life for these needy ones, what excuse will those offer who are spending their time and money upon indulgences that God has forbidden? To such will not Christ say, “I was an hungered, and ye gave Me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave Me no drink: ...naked, and ye clothed Me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited Me not”? Let all bear in mind the words of inspiration; “The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” [James 3:17.] When you pass by one who is in need of your sympathy and kindly acts, and bestow your favors upon others simply because they are more pleasing to you, remember that Jesus is insulted in the person of His afflicted ones. He says, “I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; I was a stranger and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.” [Matthew 25:42, 43.]11LtMs, Lt 74, 1896, par. 37

The Lord Jesus has a special interest in every member of His family. Those who follow Him and are entrusted with a special line of work are to be as carefully and interestedly looked after by those at the head of the work as if they were members of their own family. It is this careless neglect and unfulfilled daily duties toward those who are doing service in the love of Christ that brings the displeasure of God upon His stewards. He cannot impart His Spirit to these neglectful ones. He will arraign them before His bar, saying, “I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. ... Brethren and sisters, will you this Thanksgiving live and act the Christian as well as bear the name? Remember the words of Jesus: “I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.... Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of the least of these, ye did it not unto me.” Matthew 25:42-45. Never let it pass from our minds that Christ identifies his interest with suffering humanity. And we are to work for them as he worked for us. Jesus says, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” We may show our love and benevolence to Jesus in the person of his saints, saying as did David, “All things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 3 (1876 - 1882)

Christ has passed judgment upon such. He says, “I was an hungred, and ye gave Me no meat; ... I was ... naked and ye clothed Me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited Me not.” The answer comes back, “When saw we Thee thus and administered not unto Thee?” Said Christ, “Inasmuch as ye have not done it unto one of the least of these My servants, ye have not done it unto Me.” [Matthew 25:42-45.] Thus Christ shows that He identifies His interest with suffering humanity. A neglect of the duties due to suffering humanity whom Christ calls His brethren is a neglect of Himself in the person of His saints. Many seem willing to do some great work for the Master, but when He places directly before them work to do in the common duties of life, they will not accept it, but call for some greater work. Would they bear these lessor responsibilities, be faithful in that which is least, they would then evidence that they were qualified for higher trusts.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 3 (1876 - 1882)

What do all these things mean? What misery and distress has come to flow out of the idea that because one can use means that he will use it unwisely and so absorb means that God’s wrath is kindled against them? Christ is suffering hunger in the persons of His saints. I could say more that would not be wise at this time. There are nations and individuals who are suffering today because of the wrong use of means and property which has come under the control of unsanctified managers. Money has been handled to enrich some places largely, when the places that needed this money the most receive nothing of it. Some who have done this have not known what they were doing. They supposed that all that came into their hands should be used just as they disposed. As God looks upon His suffering missionaries, He says decidedly, “Ye have done it unto Me. I was hungry but ye fed Me not; thirsty, but ye gave Me no drink; naked, and ye clothed Me not; sick and in prison, and ye visited Me not.” [Matthew 25:42-45.] The sight which has been presented to me a few months since is terrible, terrible. My heart aches for Africa. What might the sums of money spent in Gospel Wagons and to abundantly supply the lowest class of people have done for those who never have had the privilege of hearing the gospel? They are in foreign countries. I have the word of the Lord. What a shameful neglect has been in our missionary board in being members of that board and refusing to do as the necessities were made known to them. The money spent in that Colorado institution was not a necessity, but there was necessity—deep and full—in foreign missions. Who at the heart of the work has carried that burden for Africa or India, instituting measures to create relief for these destitute regions? The sight is before God, and the test upon men who have not relieved the necessities.Matthew 25:44

The Lord has given me a very sharp testimony for those who have had no respect for the men who were carrying the load. They would not help to bear this load, but they committed the grievous sin of criticizing and making misstatements, talking at the same time of their great wisdom. This evil comes of self-worship, of making self the center, of admiring and exalting one’s own capabilities. When people allow their minds to become soured, the influence they exert is just that which a soured man might be expected to exert. Could they see their works as others see them, pretense, boasting, and self-sufficiency would be swept away. In the day of judgment none will be more surprised than those who respond to their condemnatory sentence by saying, “Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?” [Matthew 25:44.] They did not know that they were under the enemy’s generalship, learning of him to do harm, but supposed that they were doing good.Matthew 25:45

We shall have a debt to settle with the Master by and by, when He shall say: “Give an account of thy stewardship.” Luke 16:2. If men prefer to set aside the claims of God and to grasp and selfishly retain all that He gives them, He will hold His peace at present and continue frequently to test them by increasing His bounties and letting His blessings flow on, and these men may pass on receiving honor of men and without censure in the church; but by and by He will say: “Give an account of thy stewardship.” Says Christ: “Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to Me.” Matthew 25:45. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price,” and are under obligation to glorify God with your means as well as in your body and in your spirit, which are His. “Ye are bought with a price,” not “with corruptible things, as silver and gold,” “but with the precious blood of Christ.” He asks a return of the gifts that He has entrusted to us, to aid in the salvation of souls. You have failed to do this ignorantly. Nevertheless, had you stood in the light, you would have recognized the voice of Jesus in His servants, whom He has sent to you to do you good. This slight, and distrust, and withdrawal of sympathy had been as though manifested toward the Master Himself. “Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, My brethren, ye did it not to Me.” [Matthew 25:45.] This is a bad work, which will stand against you in the day of God, unless you repent of this great sin and put it away. Those who claim to believe in Christ are to represent Christ in deeds of kindness and mercy. Such will never know until the day of judgment what good they have done in seeking to follow the example of the Saviour. In heaven a book is written for those who interest themselves in the needs of their fellow beings, a book whose record will be revealed in that day when every man will be judged according to the deeds written therein. God will repay every act of injustice done to the poor. Those who manifest indifference or disregard for the unfortunate must not expect to receive the blessing of Him who declared, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.” [Matthew 25:40.]
