Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students

To the Teachers at Berrien Springs:

CT 253.2

With a deep, earnest interest to help your students, carry them over the ground of knowledge. Come as close to them as you can. Unless teachers have the love and gentleness of Christ abounding in their hearts, they will manifest too much of the spirit of a harsh, domineering schoolmaster. “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” Jude 21-23.

Chapter 54—To the Teachers in Our Schools

7T 267.5

The Lord wishes you to learn how to use the gospel net. That you may be successful in your work, the meshes of your net must be close. The application of the Scriptures must be such that the meaning shall be easily discerned. Then make the most of drawing in the net. Come right to the point. However great a man’s knowledge, it is of no avail unless he is able to communicate it to others. Let the pathos of your voice, its deep feeling, make an impression on hearts. Urge your students to surrender themselves to God. “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” Jude 1:21-23. As you follow Christ’s example you will have the precious reward of seeing your students won to Him.

The day is breaking, and I must stop for a little rest. But I want you to know that we sympathize with you and with Brother Waggoner. We have no time to lose. While the day lasts, let us work to turn the wandering ones to the path of life. “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire: hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever.” [Jude 21-25.]

Chapter 4—Enduring Victory

Te 116.2

The Rescued to Help Others—All who give evidence of true conversion should be encouraged to work for others. Let none turn away a soul who leaves the service of Satan for the service of Christ. When one gives evidence that the Spirit of God is striving with him, present every encouragement for entering the Lord’s service. “Of some have compassion, making a difference.” Jude 22. Those who are wise in the wisdom that comes from God will see souls in need of help, those who have sincerely repented, but who without encouragement would hardly dare to lay hold of hope. The Lord will put it into the hearts of His servants to welcome these trembling, repentant ones to their loving fellowship. Whatever may have been their besetting sins, however low they may have fallen, when in contrition they come to Christ, He receives them. Then give them something to do for Him. If they desire to labor in uplifting others from the pit of destruction from which they themselves were rescued, give them opportunity. Bring them into association with experienced Christians, that they may gain spiritual strength. Fill their hearts and hands with work for the Master.

TSB 264.2

Welcome for the Repentant—“And of some have compassion, making a difference” [Jude 1:22]. Those who are wise in the wisdom born of God will see souls in need of help, souls who have been overcome, and who, though they have sincerely repented, would scarcely dare, without encouragement, to lay hold of hope. The Lord will put it into the hearts of those who are stewards of His grace to welcome these trembling, repentant souls to their loving fellowship. His true followers will not treat sinners as if they were beyond forgiveness. They will have compassion on those whose circumstances have been unfavorable, and who have allowed Satan to lead them in forbidden paths.

Our God wants His people to cherish loving-kindness and tender sympathy. There is not among us half the practical godliness that there should be. Fine discernment is needed. We need to learn the meaning of the words, “Of some have compassion, making a difference.” [Jude 22.] A true Christian is the poor man’s friend. He deals with his perplexed and unfortunate brother as one would deal with a delicate, tender, sensitive plant.

Chapter 18—“Go Into the Highways and Hedges”

COL 235.3

Christ will impart to His messengers the same yearning love that He Himself has in seeking for the lost. We are not merely to say, “Come.” There are those who hear the call, but their ears are too dull to take in its meaning. Their eyes are too blind to see anything good in store for them. Many realize their great degradation. They say, I am not fit to be helped; leave me alone. But the workers must not desist. In tender, pitying love, lay hold of the discouraged and helpless ones. Give them your courage, your hope, your strength. By kindness compel them to come. “Of some have compassion, making a difference; and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire.” Jude 22, 23.

Qualifications for the Work

GW92 255.1

We are living in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, and our nice and exact plans cannot always be carried out to the advantage of all. If we stand back upon our dignity, we shall fail to help those who need help the most. The servants of Christ should accommodate themselves to the varied conditions of the people. They cannot carry out exact rules, if they meet the cases of all. Labor will have to be varied to meet the people where they are. “Of some have compassion, making a difference; and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” [Jude 22, 23.]

Some will be most earnest and zealous in their resistance to the truth; but while their faults must be exposed unflinchingly, and their evil practices condemned, long-suffering, patience, and forbearance must be exercised toward them. <[“And of] some have compassion, making a difference: [and] others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garments spotted [by] the flesh.” [Jude 22, 23.]>

But let us not forget that different methods are to be employed to save different ones. “Of some have compassion, making a difference; and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” [Jude 22, 23.]

An Unchanging Promise

8T 17.4

To the minister of the gospel God has given the work of guiding to Christ those who have wandered from the narrow way. He is to be wise and earnest in his efforts. At the end of each year he should be able to look back and see souls saved as the result of his labors. Some he is to save with fear, “pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh,” “holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught.” Jude 23; Titus 1:9. Paul’s charge to Timothy comes to the ministers of today: “I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ; ...Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine.” 2 Timothy 4:1, 2.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 2 (1869 - 1875)

2LtMs, Lt 1, 1875, par. 34

You can do but little in your own strength, but God’s messengers will unite with your efforts [and] bring you power from above. You may lay hold on the strength of Christ from above and on your fellow men below you, and if you do not fail or become discouraged, you will see fruit for your work of faith and labor of love. Do your little with faithfulness in the fear of God and enlighten those who are in darkness. You will have to work for some with your utmost vigor, for some are to be saved “so as by fire,” pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment spotted with the flesh. [1 Corinthians 3:15; Jude 23.]

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 3 (1876 - 1882)

You will now go decidedly forward or backward to Egyptian darkness. There must be no halting between two opinions. Your case is, “Others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted with the flesh.” Jude 23. This is why I am so thorough now. I do think it would be best for you to prove yourself at home, where you have so decidedly failed, before you shall go elsewhere. Redeem yourself on the field of battle where Satan has conquered you through the artifices of an unprincipled girl.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

Lt 74b, 1897

12LtMs, Lt 74b, 1897, par. 2

As we work, we see the need of prayer and of striving continually for a deeper insight into the mystery of God’s love to us through Christ Jesus. In beholding His glory, we are reflecting His image from glory to glory, to a more perfect character. It is the Christlikeness we bear with us before those who are seeking for truth that thaws the frozen-up affections of their souls and our own souls as well. There will be times when you will find you will have to lay hold of souls as represented in Jude, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garments spotted with the flesh. [Jude 23.] Reach down deep, pull hard, never let go your hold upon the line of faith and determined purpose. Draw, draw, draw, for all the work is of God and the universe of heaven draws with you.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Lt 72, 1899

14LtMs, Lt 72, 1899, par. 3

I believe the Lord will give more souls as sheaves in the very field where you are now laboring. Christ is your Helper and your God. Take firm hold of His strength, and you will see the salvation of God. We must reach the people just where they are. One phase of our work is to give the compelling message, for there are those who need your urgency to make them decide to obey the Word. “Come, for all things are now ready.” [Luke 14:17.] I am so glad that so many have taken hold of the truth. This is as it should be. Everything should be done that can be done to win souls to Christ. Then everything possible should be done to draw them to Him. The work is to be done that is represented by Jude as “pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” [Jude 23.] God will work to co-operate with His chosen workers. We are never alone. One can chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight.

We need to be constantly on our guard, to watch and pray lest we enter into temptation. The indulgence of spiritual pride, of unholy desires, of evil thoughts, of anything that separates us from an intimate and sacred association with Jesus imperils our souls.... If the thought of apostasy is grievous to you, and you do not desire to become the enemies of the truth, the accusers of the brethren, then “abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good” (Romans 12:9), and believe in Him who is “able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 24).5The Review and Herald, May 8, 1888.

Christ is coming with clouds and with great glory. A multitude of shining angels will attend Him. He will come to raise the dead, and to change the living saints from glory to glory. He will come to honor those who have loved Him, and kept His commandments, and to take them to Himself. He has not forgotten them nor His promise. There will be a relinking of the family chain. When we look upon our dead, we may think of the morning when the trump of God shall sound, when “the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” 1 Corinthians 15:52.
