Reflecting Christ
Christ Supplies Us With Living Water, January 4
RC 18.2
The priest ... performed the ceremony which commemorated the smiting of the rock in the wilderness. That rock was a symbol of Him who by His death would cause living streams of salvation to flow to all who are athirst. Christ’s words were the water of life. There in the presence of the assembled multitude He set Himself apart to be smitten, that the water of life might flow to the world. In smiting Christ, Satan thought to destroy the Prince of life; but from the smitten rock there flowed living water. As Jesus thus spoke to the people, their hearts thrilled with a strange awe, and many were ready to exclaim, with the woman of Samaria, “Give me this water, that I thirst not” (John 4:15).RC 18.4
The cry of Christ to the thirsty soul is still going forth, and it appeals to us with even greater power than to those who heard it in the temple on the last day of the feast. The fountain is open for all. The weary and exhausted ones are offered the refreshing draught of eternal life. Jesus is still crying, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” “Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17). “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14).—The Desire of Ages, 454.The Desire of Ages

Do you wish to do the will of your Father who is in heaven? Then you must have a vital connection with God. Have you felt that it was necessary to represent Christ in the home life, and in association one with another? Were this necessity always realized, how many unnecessary dissensions would be avoided, how much alienation and strife among brethren would be put away! How little self-denial, how little self-sacrifice is manifested in many of the homes that are called Christian homes! But true Christians must practice true godliness. They must follow the example of Christ, who declared, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” [John 4:34.] Let the words of your lips be, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh when no man can work.” [John 9:4.] Now is your time to work; soon it will be too late.10LtMs, Lt 90, 1895, par. 6
You are in no way safe in indulging in levity and carelessness, for He that is to come, will come, and will not tarry. You all have need to drink deeper draughts from the fountain of living water. Christ said, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up unto everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] Those upon whom the Spirit of God is working to mold and to fashion them after the elevated character of Christ do not cultivate commonness, cheapness of speech, trifling, jesting and joking. They pattern after Christ, who stands before us all a perfect and correct model. Imitate Christ. Be weighted with the truth of God. Be solemn and serious, for the day of God is right upon us. You will not be able to stand in that day when everything is to be shaken that can be shaken, unless Christ is formed within, the hope of glory. Do you bear the name of Christ? Then do not misrepresent Christ.John 4:14-35

Hide not yourself from your own flesh. Go to work right where you are among any people [where] there is work to do. “Lift up your eyes,” says Christ, “and look.” [John 4:35.] Why? For the fields are ripe and ready for harvest. What is interposing? Men interpose themselves right between the people and Christ. They are working in the lines of the enemy instead of in the light and power of truth, and the God of Heaven must see in the human agent the power that says, “Come, for all things are ready.” [Luke 14:17.] That is what we want. We want to give the people food. They are hungry. We do not want the froth; we do not want the fables, but we want the Word of the infinite God.9LtMs, Ms 11, 1894, par. 24
“If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity.” [Verse 9.] It is not only the body, but the soul that is expressed in this work. How many we see whose light is in obscurity. O, if I could find Jesus. I have letters come to me saying, “How shall I find Jesus? I have prayed, but I do not get any answer to my prayer.” Christ says, “If ye do these things, I will answer. I am with you. I am right by your side.” What can we suppose is the reason that we are in obscurity? The light is shining, and here Christ says, “Then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day.” [Verse 10.] Let us thank God. Let a gratitude offering come up to God. “And the Lord shall guide thee continually.” If His words to us continue we are not in darkness. “And the Lord shall guide thee continually and satisfy thy soul in drought ... thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” [Verse 11.] [For] everyone that trusts in Jesus and drinks the water that He gives them, it shall be in them “as a well of water springing up unto everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] Let us see what work we have to do.John 4:14-37

We can appreciate the words of Christ as entirely applicable to Maitland: “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. ... And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.” [John 4:35, 37.] This representation is true to the letter. The sowing and the reaping are going forward at the same time.14LtMs, Lt 218, 1899, par. 11
The Lord has a people in our churches in America, and they have become, some of them, discouraged and confused. But talk the truth. The third angel’s message is to go forth with power, and [it] will pierce the moral darkness black as velvet. Expect everything possible that God can give. Do not talk doubts; do not ponder doubts. God has a people true as steel to principle, but they are confused. They are walking like blind men. Help them, for Christ’s sake, help them. Walk with Jesus, talk with Jesus, and then you have light and comfort and love and power from your best Friend. O, it is such a privilege! “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing into everlasting life.” [Verse 14.] We need more faith. The bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness will disperse every dark cloud. May the Lord Jesus abundantly bless you, my brother and my sister. I miss you very much, but remain until your work is done. Then we welcome you back again, for there is a large work for you to do. How comforting it is to know that we do not need to stumble our way along in midnight darkness. Light is sown for the righteous, and truth and gladness for the upright in heart.John 4:14-42

I was shown that on the part of the ministers in all our conferences and churches there is a neglect to study the Scriptures, to search for the truth. If their minds were properly disciplined, and were stored with the precious lessons of Christ, then at any time and in any emergency they could draw from the treasure house of knowledge things both new and old, to feed the church of God, giving to every man his portion of meat in due season. If Christ is abiding in the soul, he will be as a living fountain, “a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.]6LtMs, Ms 19, 1890, par. 27
There is a sad neglect of reading the Bible and searching it with humble hearts for yourselves. Take no man’s explanation of Scripture, whatever his position, but go to the Bible and search for <the truth> yourselves. [After hearing Jesus, the Samaritans said,] <“Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard Him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” [John 4:42.]> There is the mine of truth. Sink the shaft deep, and you will possess that knowledge which is of highest value to you. Many have become lazy <and criminally neglectful in regard to> the searching of the Scriptures, and they are as destitute of the Spirit of God as of the knowledge of His Word. We read in the Revelation made to John of some who had a name to live while they were dead. [Revelation 3:1.] Yes, there are many such among us as a people, many who claim to be alive, while they are dead.John 4:15

Our institutions for any land are not to be crowded together in one locality. God never designed that the light of truth should be thus restricted. For a time the Jewish nation was required to worship at Jerusalem. But Jesus said to the Samaritan woman: “Believe Me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.” “The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. Chapter 2—The Temple and Its Dedication
PK 50.4
Although God dwells not in temples made with hands, yet He honors with His presence the assemblies of His people. He has promised that when they come together to seek Him, to acknowledge their sins, and to pray for one another, He will meet with them by His Spirit. But those who assemble to worship Him should put away every evil thing. Unless they worship Him in spirit and truth and in the beauty of holiness, their coming together will be of no avail. Of such the Lord declares, “This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoreth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me.” Matthew 15:8, 9. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). When our hearts are tuned to praise our Maker, not only in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs but also in our lives, we shall live in communion with Heaven.... There will be gratitude in the heart and in the home, in private as well as in public devotion. This constitutes the true worship of God.15The Youth’s Instructor, December 31, 1896.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24.) Here is declared the same truth that Jesus had revealed to Nicodemus when He said, “Except a man be born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3, margin.) Not by seeking a holy mountain or a sacred temple are people brought into communion with heaven. Religion is not to be confined to external forms and ceremonies. The religion that comes from God is the only religion that will lead to God. In order to serve Him aright, we must be born of the divine Spirit. This will purify the heart and renew the mind, giving us a new capacity for knowing and loving God. It will give us a willing obedience to all His requirements. This is true worship. It is the fruit of the working of the Holy Spirit. By the Spirit every sincere prayer is indited, and such prayer is acceptable to God. Wherever a soul reaches out after God, there the Spirit’s working is manifest, and God will reveal Himself to that soul. For such worshipers He is seeking. He waits to receive them, and to make them His sons and daughters. . . .HB 88.3
The gospel invitation is not to be narrowed down, and presented only to a select few, who, we suppose, will do us honor if they accept it. The message is to be given to all. Wherever hearts are open to receive the truth, Christ is ready to instruct them. He reveals to them the Father, and the worship acceptable to Him who reads the heart. For such He uses no parables. To them, as to the woman at the well, He says, “I that speak unto thee am He.” (John 4:26.) . . .John 4:25-42

I am unable to sleep past two o’clock a.m. The words spoken by Christ to His disciples are forcibly impressed on my mind. “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me,” He said, “and to finish his work. Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.” [John 4:34-36.]12LtMs, Lt 55, 1897, par. 2
Christ had just announced Himself to the Samaritan woman as the Messiah. As this woman had talked with Him, she was impressed with His words, and began to have some conviction of His character. The question arose in her mind, “Might not this be the long looked for Messiah?” She said to Him, “I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. ... And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?” [Verses 25, 27.]12LtMs, Lt 55, 1897, par. 7
“Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did she said, is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city and came unto him. ... And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more believed on him because of his own word; and said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying; for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” [John 4:29, 30, 39-42.]12LtMs, Lt 55, 1897, par. 15
We need to broaden our labors, and to encourage our workers to do the work that Christ did when presenting the grand truths of the gospel to one who was waiting for light. The end is near. “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” [John 4:35.]12LtMs, Lt 55, 1897, par. 20
“He that reapeth receiveth wages,” said Christ, “and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labor; other men labored, and ye are entered into their labors.” [Verses 36-38.] Christ pointed out the high and sacred service owed to God by those that received the truth. They are to be His living agencies. He requires their individual service. And whether we sow or reap, we are working for God. The reaper and the sower both receive wages. One scatters the seed; the other gathers in the harvest. One puts the seed in the soil; the other gathers the fruit.John 4:28-42

After Christ had talked with the Samaritan woman, she believed Him to be the Messiah, and she was glad to receive the truth. She wanted her brethren of Samaria to see and know Christ, and desired to carry to them the great and good tidings. “She went into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” [John 4:28, 29.] So deeply impressed was she with the truth that this was the Christ that when she went into the city, she left her waterpot behind. The men were interested in her report and came out of the city to Jesus.13LtMs, Ms 35, 1898, par. 2
After the woman had gone to the city, the disciples saw that Christ’s face was irradiated. He did not seem to notice the food they had placed before Him. They entreated Him to take the refreshment they had brought to Him. “But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.” The disciples did not understand His words and they said to each other, “Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” [Verses 32-34.]13LtMs, Ms 35, 1898, par. 3

And many more believed because of his own word; and said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” [Verses 39-42.] Oh, how Christ rejoiced! The eternal welfare of sinners regulated the conduct of Jesus. He went about doing good. Benevolence was the life of his soul. He not only did good to all who came to him soliciting his mercy, but he perseveringly sought them out. He was never elated with applause, or dejected by censure or disappointment. When he met with the greatest opposition and the most cruel treatment, he was of good courage. The most important discourse that Inspiration has given us, Christ preached to only one listener. As he sat upon the well to rest, for he was weary, a Samaritan woman came to draw water; he saw an opportunity to reach her mind, and through her to reach the minds of the Samaritans, who were in great darkness and error. Although weary, he presented the truths of his spiritual kingdom, which charmed the heathen woman, and filled her with admiration for Christ. She went forth publishing the news, “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” [John 4:29.] This woman’s testimony converted many to a belief in Christ. Through her report, many came to hear him for themselves, and believed because of his own word. That I May Know Him

The centuries that have passed since Christ was among men have not lessened the confidence of our testimony that Christ is all that He claimed to be. Today the question may be repeated, “What think ye of Christ?” (Matthew 22:42), and without a moment’s hesitation the answer may be given, “He is the light of the world, the greatest religious thinker and teacher the world has ever known.” All who hear His voice today, all who study the principles set forth in His teaching, must say, in truthfulness, as did the Jews of His day, “Never man spake like this man.” “Is not this the Christ?” (John 7:46; 4:29).22The Youth’s Instructor, September 16, 1897.John 4:29-36

Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” [Verses 31-34.]14LtMs, Ms 5, 1899, par. 18
As Christ spoke these words to His disciples, He was thinking of the way in which the Samaritan woman received His message. He had told her great truths; she had received them joyfully, and going into the city, she told her story and brought to Him those who listened to her report. Jesus used this occurrence as an opportunity to impressing truth upon the minds of His disciples. At that time the fields bore no appearance of harvest; the seed was only just sown. Christ said, “Say not ye, there are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, for they are white already for harvest.” [Verse 35.] There was no appearance of harvest in the natural world.14LtMs, Ms 5, 1899, par. 19
Between the sowing and the reaping there must be a time of waiting. But the seed that had been sown in the mind of the Samaritan woman had already borne fruit. She received the word spoken, and immediately began to impart to others the knowledge of eternal life. Jesus knew what the result would be. He knew that the Samaritans would come to Him to hear for themselves the things of the kingdom of God, and would believe on Him, “because of the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all things that ever I did.” [Verse 39.] Those who first heard of Christ from the woman listened to many more truths from His own lips. These were precious to them; they received Jesus as the Christ of God.John 4:29-41

Chapter 11—The Gospel in Samaria
AA 106.3
Christ’s message to the Samaritan woman with whom He had talked at Jacob’s well had borne fruit. After listening to His words, the woman had gone to the men of the city, saying, “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” They went with her, heard Jesus, and believed on Him. Anxious to hear more, they begged Him to remain. For two days He stayed with them, “and many more believed because of His own word.” John 4:29, 41.From Trials to Triumph

Our Lord said, “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” [John 4:35.] The disciples could not discern any flattering appearance, but rather they saw a discouraging outlook. Christ was speaking in figurative language. The seed of truth had been sown and the harvest was about to follow. The sermon Christ preached to that one woman of Samaria was the sowing of the seed, and very rapidly followed the harvest. She went quickly into the Samaritan city and voiced the words spoken by Christ to her. And with decided assurance she said, “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did; Is not this the Christ?” [Verse 29.]10LtMs, Lt 80a, 1895, par. 7
And many of the Samaritans believed on Him for the saying of the woman, who testified, “He told me all that ever I did.” And many more believed because of His own word, “And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying, for we have heard Him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” [Verses 39, 41, 42.]10LtMs, Lt 80a, 1895, par. 10
This experience was of great advantage to the disciples. It was a lesson, demonstrating the nature of the fields to be worked in the presentation of the truth. For while there would be many who would not yield to conviction, there were souls hungering for the words of life and salvation. Many would hear, and many would receive and believe. And they would testify, “We have heard Him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” [Verse 42.] This is a complete and full testimony to the truth. Those who readily received the words of Christ would sow the seed of truth in other hearts. They would take notice of the fields now open for labor.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

I felt an earnest desire to open to the people the missionary field right around us. As the disciples pressed round Christ after His conversation with the Samaritan woman, urging Him to eat, He answered, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of.” The disciples were perplexed, and said, “Hath any man brought him ought to eat?” “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. Say ye not, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes and look on the fields, for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal, that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.” [John 4:32-36.]13LtMs, Ms 77, 1898, par. 4
It was a precious satisfaction to Christ to have such an interview as He had with the woman of Samaria. Often when giving the most precious lessons, He was interrupted by the Scribes and Pharisees, while the attention of His hearers turned into channels of questions and unbelief. He could speak freely to this poor, sinful woman, giving her to drink of the water of life. He knew that she would communicate the truth to her countrymen. Leaving her waterpot, she hastened away, bearing a surprising message to those in the city. “He told me all things that ever I did,” she said. “So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own word; and said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saving: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” [Verses 29, 40-42.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

In Samaria the believers were not persecuted. Christ’s conversation with the women of Samaria was not without results. After listening to His words, the woman left Him, and going to the men of the city said, “Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did. Is not this the Christ? ... And many of the Samaritans believed on him for the saying of the woman which testified, He told me all things that ever I did. Forgetting her water-pitcher, she hastened away to communicate the good news to her Samaritan brethren. “Come,” she said, “see a man, which told me all things that ever I did.” [Verse 29.] And they came out at once to see Him. Dr. Kellogg, there is a field that should be worked, but where are the workers? Say not ye when ye have committed your seed to the ground, There are yet four months—the usual time between seed-sowing and harvest—and then cometh harvest. Christ was referring to the Samaritans. God has given His object lesson. If the world will not heed, will not the people of God take heed? In the twenty-first chapter of Luke, Christ foretold what was to come upon Jerusalem; with it He connected the scenes which were to take place in the history of this world just prior to the coming of the Son of man in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Mark the words: “Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man” [Verses 34-36].Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

The coming of these people to Christ was an object-lesson to the disciples, and it should teach important lessons to all who are interested in the salvation of souls. “Many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all things that ever I did. “He that soweth and he that reapeth.” [Verse 36.] Christ had been sowing the seeds of truth in the streets of the cities and in the synagogues. The truth had been presented to the people. The conditions of salvation had been outlined clearly and distinctly; for the truth never languished on the Saviour’s lips. As the result of His words an interest had been created, and the disciples were to follow up the work of the great Sower, that both Sower and reapers might unitedly rejoice.16LtMs, Lt 20, 1901, par. 8
“I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labor.” [Verse 38.] These words were spoken in anticipation of the ordination and sending forth of the disciples. The earthly work of the great Leader and Teacher was soon to close, but He had prepared the way by sending holy men before Him, and the apostles were to follow after to perfect the work by reaping the harvest.16LtMs, Lt 20, 1901, par. 10
God will use them as His instruments in the conversion of souls. They will reap the harvest of the seed sown by the great Teacher. Let those who go forth into the great harvest field, some to sow and some to reap, ever remember that they are not to take to themselves the glory of the result of their work. God’s appointed agencies have been at work before them, preparing the way for the sowing of the seed and the reaping of the harvest. “I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labor; other men labored, and ye are entered into their labors.” [Verse 38.]16LtMs, Lt 20, 1901, par. 13
Read these verses carefully. Take in their meaning; for in them the plan of God is revealed. “He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.” [Verse 36.] Often God’s workers are opposed in the place where they labor, and thus their usefulness is hindered. They <may> have done their best in all wisdom. They have sown good and precious seed. But the opposing elements become fiercer and more discouraging, and it may be wise for them to go to another place, for even though some are convinced of the truth, they are intimidated by the opposition. They have not the courage to acknowledge that their reason is convinced.John 4:31-34

The life of Christ was a perfect life. It was a life of intense spirituality. Every circumstance of life Christ turned into an occasion for unfolding truth. As He sat by Jacob’s well, talking to the woman of Samaria, His disciples came to Him with food, saying, “Master, eat. And he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Therefore said his disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat? I feel cut loose from many of my brethren, they do not understand me or my mission or my work, for if they did they could never have pursued the course they have done. The words given me of God may find no place in the hearts of those who have heard them so many times, but there are fields all white ready to harvest, just such cases as this Samaritan woman, apparently the most unlikely will become the heralds of truth, while those who have had great light will be passed by; wise and prudent, they see not the workings of God, but the truth will be revealed to babes and they will respond to it.John 4:31-38

God stands toward His people in the relation of a father, and He has a father’s claim to our faithful service. Consider the life of Christ. Standing at the head of humanity, serving His Father, He is an example of what every son should and may be. The obedience that Christ rendered God requires from human beings today. He served His Father with love, in willingness and freedom. “I delight to do Thy will, O My God,” He declared; “yea, Thy law is within My heart.” Psalm 40:8. Christ counted no sacrifice too great, no toil too hard, in order to accomplish the work which He came to do. At the age of twelve He said, “Wist ye not that I must be about My Father’s business?” Luke 2:49. He had heard the call, and had taken up the work. “My meat,” He said, “is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.” John 4:34.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

Those who are divested of selfishness will love God supremely and their neighbors as themselves. “He that loveth not, knoweth not God.” [1 John 4:8.] It was love for God that made Christ say, “I delight to do thy will, O my God.” [Psalm 40:8.] “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me.” [John 4:34.] Talk, Pharisaism, and self-praise is abundant; but this will never win souls to Christ. Pure, sanctified love, expressed by Christ’s lifework, is as sacred perfume. Like an opened bottle of perfume, it fills the whole house with fragrance. Eloquence, an extended knowledge of the truth, outward devotion, rare talents, if mingled with sacred, humble love, will become as fragrant as the opened box of ointment. But gifts alone, ability alone, the choicest endowments alone, cannot take the place of love.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Amid the abounding of Israel’s sin, Christ recognized the grace of God. “He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” [John 1:11, 12.] He declared, “My meat is to do the will of my Father, and to finish his work.” [John 4:34.] At the time of His rejection, He said, “I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father; and no man knoweth the Son but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father save the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.” [Matthew 11:25-27.] Man’s rejection of God did not impair Christ’s confidence in His Father.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

All our medical missionary work is to bear the marks of heavenly, denominated power. It is to be free from stain and corruption and defilement. When Christ was engaged in medical missionary work, He declared to His disciples, “My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.” [John 4:34.] If this was His plan in doing this line work, if the Lord of life and glory thus resigned Himself in conformity to the divine will in order to give to the world an example of self-denial and self-sacrifice, how it does put to shame our human preferences, our human exaltation!Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

Said Christ, “My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.” [John 4:34.] “I seek not Mine own glory, but the glory of Him that sent Me.” [See John 8:50.] The people of God are to be aroused to a sense of their deficiencies and of the work that they must do. They are to break every yoke and make their prayers practical. “Lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.” [Isaiah 58:1.] For the eternal interest of the people of God, their sins and their defects of character must be plainly pointed out. So long have they exalted themselves as supreme in wisdom that they are self-deceived. They have not on the robe of Christ’s righteousness; but it is not yet too late for them to repent and confess their sins and be converted and bring mercy, justice, and judgment into their lives. If they would receive the message and do the merciful acts of Christ, they would live a new life in Him, putting away all boasting, all falsifying, all evil speaking, and humbling their hearts before God, according to the instruction given by Christ in the Old and the New Testaments, remembering that in life and character they must be representatives of Christ. They would honor their Redeemer by daily living the new life—a life hid with Christ in God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

I am entrusted with a message. In our food work have we not been walking and working more nearly after the pattern of the world than after the pattern of Christ? What words have we spoken to the large multitudes we have fed? How are we presenting to these souls the Bread of life? Can Christ say to us, “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” [Matthew 25:23.] Can each worker truthfully say, “My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work”? Said Christ, “My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.” [Verse 34.] Shall we take up a work of preparing food for multitudes of unbelievers, and yet leave unspoken the words of life? Shall we so busy ourselves in the preparation of many lines of food that we cannot give an example of what it means to receive and to practice the Word of life?Christ’s Object Lessons

However trying their labor, the true workers do not regard it as drudgery. They are ready to spend and to be spent; but it is a cheerful work, done with a glad heart. Joy in God is expressed through Jesus Christ. Their joy is the joy set before Christ—“to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.” John 4:34. They are in co-operation with the Lord of glory. This thought sweetens all toil, it braces the will, it nerves the spirit for whatever may befall. Working with unselfish heart, ennobled by being partakers of Christ’s sufferings, sharing His sympathies, and co-operating with Him in His labor, they help to swell the tide of His joy and bring honor and praise to His exalted name.In Heavenly Places

God stands toward His people in the relation of a father, and He has a father’s claim to our faithful service. Consider the life of Christ. Standing at the head of humanity, serving His Father, He is an example of what every son should and may be. The obedience that Christ rendered, God requires from human beings today. He served His Father in love, with willingness and freedom. “I delight to do thy will, O my God,” He declared: “yea, thy law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8). Christ counted no sacrifice too great, no toil too hard, in order to accomplish the work which He came to do. At the age of twelve He said, “Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49). He had heard the call, and had taken up the work. “My meat,” He said, “is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34).Our High Calling

Christ came to this world for a purpose,—to perform a divine mission. Every other consideration was subordinated to the fulfilment of this work. “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me,” he declared, “and to finish his work.” John 4:34. And knowing that the opposition to his labors would wax stronger until finally he must cease, he said, further: “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” John 9:4. And when the sad hour came that cruel hands were laid on the son of God, on that same night when to the emissaries of the great adversary the words were spoken, “this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” Jesus “lifted up his eyes to heaven,” and could say to his father, “I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.”With God at Dawn

My husband and myself are usually well. We go forth next week to our season’s labor. The Master has said unto us, “Go, labor in my vineyard.” [Matthew 21:28.] We go cheerfully, gladly. As long as there are souls out of Christ there is work for us everywhere. Our pleasure or ease is not to be consulted in this matter. “Christ pleased not himself.” Romans 15:3. “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me.” John 4:34. Christ expects us to keep the will of God ever before us, making it our rule of life, committing the keeping of our souls to God as unto a faithful Creator. We are not to allow our own will to control, for we have been bought with a price. We are to keep ever in view the glory of God, for we are Christ’s representatives. Every purpose, every plan, every object, must bow to the supreme will. “I came” Christ said, “not to do mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me. My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me, and to finish His work.” [John 6:38; 4:34.] In the garden of Gethsemane, His soul enshrouded with darkness, the thought before Him that His life of humiliation and suffering was to be ended by an ignominious death, He looked to God, exclaiming, “Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me. Christ is our highest model. “Be ye followers of Me,” is the invitation from Christ Jesus. [1 Corinthians 4:16.] The fruit He bore was perfect obedience to the Word and will of God. He said, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me.” John 4:34. Benevolence and meekness were revealed in His life and character, and we must be like Jesus in our life practice. His example is to be kept before us. We do not half study His life and practice it, else we do not practice His Word. If we thoroughly do His will as He has revealed it, we shall know of the doctrine. We should not make movements in our own unsanctified natural temperament which divorces the soul from God.John 4:34-36

Brethren and sisters, we must take into consideration the fact that we are on missionary soil as laborers together with God. Just as soon as the standard is lifted in one locality, and it is safe to leave the converts new to the faith, we must plan to enter another new field. And we find that it is as has been represented to me in visions of the night. The words of Christ to His disciples were, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and finish his work. Say not ye, There are four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields: for they are white already to harvest. God is calling, and He means that we shall hear His voice. About a week since, I was shown the needy fields close around us. The sight was pitiful. Companies of people were gathered in localities, as sheep without a shepherd. These were the words spoken by Christ: “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” These words were spoken to me with much power: “Say not, There are four months, and then cometh harvest. Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields: for they are white already to harvest. We have talked this plan, and we have made desperate efforts to raise from these poor people all they could possibly give. We are in great need. What is the use of our remaining here, wrenching, twisting, and turning in every way possible to create a fund to advance the work, when we have scarcely any facilities to carry it forward? I am glad that I came to this place. I was hardly willing to come, and decided not to do so, but in the visions of the night I was addressing a large audience, whose hands were reached out as if they were saying, We are in darkness. We need light. Will you help us? I was shown several companies, reaching out their hands to me and asking for help. I looked at these companies varying in size, but all painfully in earnest, and the words came as distinctly to me as though spoken by Christ Himself, “Say not ye, there are four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white, already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.” [John 4:35, 36.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

We call upon those of our people who have money to help this institution in its pressure for means. The Lord is acquainted with the circumstances that led us to make the decision to be true to principle. I ask those who have means in the Sanitarium whether they will allow a part or all of this means to remain in the institution free from interest. And I ask those who have means that they can spare to give of this means to help the Lord’s institution in its need. We have given so largely to foreign fields that the home field is unworked. Calls are now being made for means to send to foreign fields, while in the Southern states of America there are many thousands of people who have never heard of present truth. We need to arouse, and make earnest, zealous efforts for the unworked fields of America. For years the Southern field has been kept before our people, yet how much has been done for it? What efforts have been put forth for St. Louis, New Orleans, Memphis? If the Lord Jesus were here today, He would say as He said to the disciples, “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? What kind of work is to be of value and abide? The same work is to be manifest to the world that Christ did, when He was in the world. Our minds must be drawn away from self and centered upon Jesus. Have they such a realization of the importance of the work that they are willing to separate from them that which is as dear as is the right eye, or the right arm? If the missionary has decided to follow inclination to gratify selfish propensities to walk in the sparks of his own kindling, God forbid that he should be sent to foreign lands; for he will dishonor God and bring his cause into disrepute.John 4:35-38

“One soweth, and another reapeth.” [John 4:37.] The Saviour spoke these words in anticipation of the ordination and sending forth of His disciples. Throughout Judea, Christ had been sowing the seeds of truth. Clearly and distinctly He had outlined the plan of salvation; for the truth never languished on His lips. The earthly work of the great Teacher was soon to close. The disciples were to follow after, reaping where He had sown, that both the Sower and the reapers might rejoice together.GW 409.2
Today in His great harvest-field God has need of sowers and of reapers. Let those who go forth into the work, some to sow and some to reap, remember that they are never to take to themselves the glory for the success of their work. God’s appointed agencies have been before them, preparing the way for the sowing of the seed and the reaping of the harvest. “I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labor,” Christ said; “other men labored, and ye are entered into their labors.” [John 4:38.]GW 409.3
“He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.” [John 4:36.] Read these words carefully. Study their meaning; for they outline God’s plan. Those who sow the seed, presenting before large and small gatherings the testing truth for this time, at the cost of much labor, may not always gather the harvest. Often the Lord’s workers are bitterly opposed, and their work is hindered. They do their best; with earnest, painstaking effort they sow the good seed. But the element of opposition becomes fiercer and fiercer. Some of the hearers may be convinced of the truth, but they are intimidated by the opposition shown, and they have not the courage to acknowledge their convictions.John 4:39-42

A good work cannot be done by a human agent alone. For the full development and efficiency of the intellectual as well as the spiritual powers, there must be a vital connection with God, a communion with the highest source of activity. Then with the soul all aglow with the zeal for the Master, we can be a blessing to others. Jesus said, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] Those who become partakers of the grace of Christ will guide others also to the living stream.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

It is something that comes from the fountain of life. “I will be in him a well of water.” How? “Springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] Oh there is truth springing from the heart that is nourished with the water of life, pure and refreshing, that will direct the thoughts of all around us to the Fountain head.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Our hearts are to be prepared to catch the bright beams from the Sun of Righteousness, and catch the melodies of heavenly strains, and reflect light in cheerful words of hope, faith, compassion, and love in the every day life. There are souls around us starving for light. They are hungry for kindly, sympathizing words. Words of appreciation which will be uplifting and [will] strengthen them in moral courage to work righteousness. We long to tell every one, Look to Jesus. Trust in Jesus. He will never disappoint you. You will find in Him all that precious depth and love of affection that you cannot find in any human being. He carries the balm of Gilead. He can soothe the restless discontents. He can heal by a love that is immeasurable. The soul can rest for its satisfying in Jesus Christ our sufficiency. “If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.” “The water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 7:37; 4:14.] As Christ was about to leave His disciples, to yield His life as a sacrifice for man, He said to them, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give I unto you. The one who searches for hidden treasures with humble contrition of soul will be put in possession of every essential truth for the present time. Every such soul follows on to know the Lord, Whom to know aright is life eternal. These diligent students will see that they cultivate tact, and strict temperance in all things, that they have all their habits after strict temperance practices [so] that wherever they may be, there shall not be a clouded brain from the use of the narcotic tobacco, or beer, or fermented liquors of any sort; that when the want of these things are missed, then they may hear and appreciate the words of Christ, “If any man thirst let him come unto Me and drink.” “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.” [John 7:37; 4:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The Lord responds to our call and says, What shall I do for you? He will give us the very thing that our souls hunger for. Christ says, “If ye do these things, I will answer. I am with you, right at your side.” What is the reason that men are in obscurity? The light is shining, and Christ says, “Then shall light shine in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday. And the Lord shall guide thee continually.” If Christ’s words to us continue, we cannot remain in darkness. “And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” [Verses 10, 11.] [For] those who trust in Jesus, and drink of the water that He gives, it shall be in them “a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

When I am shown the great work that might be done if those who claim to know the truth would walk in the light, and co-operate with heavenly intelligences, I feel constrained by the Spirit to write early and late. Since coming to Granville, N.S.W., I have been unable to sleep after one and two o’clock in the morning, and could relieve my oppressed mind and heart only by writing and entreating souls to give proof of the sincerity of their love for Christ and His truth by holy and beneficent action. I have pleaded with many to give proof of their piety by manifesting conformity to the likeness of Christ. If they fail to do this, they are none of Christ. He who drinks of the water which Christ shall give him will refresh others. The water which Christ gives shall be in him “a well of water springing up unto everlasting life.” Out of him shall flow “rivers of living water.” [John 4:14; 7:38.] This will be evidence that we are the children of God.Gospel Workers (1892/1893 ed.)
Personal Effort
GW92 337.2
Those who have been most successful in winning souls, were men and women who did not pride themselves in their ability, but who went in humility and faith, and the power of God worked with their efforts in convicting and converting the hearts of those to whom they appealed. Jesus did this very work. He came close to those whom he desired to benefit. How often, with a few gathered about him, he began the precious lessons, and one by one the passers-by paused to listen, until a great multitude heard with wonder and awe the words of God through the heaven-sent Teacher. He did not wait for congregations to assemble. The grandest truths were spoken to single individuals. The woman at the well in Samaria heard the wonderful words, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave on the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.” [James 1:5-7.] The voice continued, “Cast thy net on the right side of the ship; walk not in the shadow of the cross, but in the path where the Sun of Righteousness is ever shining to impart life and vitality, and to give grace for grace. The cross of Calvary is to you a pledge of forgiveness, of righteousness, of peace, and of fullness of joy. It is a well of water to every believer, springing up into everlasting life. The Spirit that reveals, also works in him the fruits of righteousness. Christ is in him, “a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] He is a branch of the True Vine, and bears rich clusters of fruit to the glory of God. What is the character of the fruit borne?—The fruit of the Spirit is “love,” not hatred; “joy,” not discontent and mourning; “peace,” not irritation, anxiety, and manufactured trials. Follow the plain Bible teachings if you would follow Jesus. Souls cost too much to be imperiled by following the words of men. We cannot safely accept any man’s decision in matters that involve eternal interests unless he can open the Scriptures and present his authority as from Him who is the Truth. Obey the words of Christ by searching the Scriptures, and through diligent study have the Word of God stored in your memory, so that in any emergency you can say earnestly, solemnly, “It is written.” Jesus says, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] And He declared to the multitude at the Feast of Tabernacles, “He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” [John 7:38.] As the Word of God is received into the heart, it transforms character and life. Then the influence that flows from the believer is the influence of the Word of God, a positive life-giving power.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Continuing to drink of these, you will never thirst, for Christ says, “The water that I shall give him, shall be in him a well of water, springing up unto everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] If the heart is corrupt, it will bring forth that which is a savor of death unto death, but if the heart is sanctified by the truth as it is in Jesus, those words will be spoken which are a savor of life unto life. The divine antidote for the sin of the whole world is contained in the gospel of St. John. There is found a recipe for all the maladies of the soul. “Whoso eateth of my flesh and drinketh of my blood,” Christ declares, “hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” [John 6:54.] He may die, as Christ died, but the life of the Saviour is in him; his life is hid with Christ in God. “I am come that they might have life,” Jesus said, “and that they might have it more abundantly.” [John 10:10.] Again He said, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water, springing up unto everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] “This spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him shall receive.” [John 7:39.] Christ carries on the great process by which believers become one with Him in this present life and are one with Him in life eternal.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)
