If you walk carefully before God, those who believe in Christ will respect you for Christ’s sake. Jesus receives and welcomes you as His own friend. He loves you, He has pledged Himself to open before you all the treasures of His grace for your appropriation. He says, “At that day ye shall ask in My name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: for the Father Himself loveth you, because ye have loved Me, and have believed that I came out from God” [John 16:26, 27]. He virtually says, Make use of My name, and it will be your passport to the heart of My Father and to all the riches of His grace. “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in My name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full” [verses 23, 24]. “And whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son” [John 14:13]. You should educate the soul to have implicit trust in God; for what we need is more faith.—Letter 92, 1895.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

An Answer To Prayer
CET 71.1
We all knelt in earnest prayer to God in her behalf. We claimed the promise, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” John 16:24. The blessing of God attended our prayers, and we had the assurance that God was willing to heal the afflicted one. One of the brethren present cried out, “Is there a sister here who has the faith to go and take her by the hand, and bid her arise in the name of the Lord?”Lift Him Up

But do not forget that in coming to God as a father you acknowledge your relation to Him as a child. You not only trust His goodness, but in all things yield to His will, knowing that His love is changeless. You give yourself to do His work. It was to those whom He had bidden to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness that Jesus gave the promise, “Ask, and ye shall receive” (John 16:24).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Christ asks you, my dear brother, to choose to serve Him, to come out from the world, and be separate. As you fully consecrate yourself to Him, your heart will be filled with a joy that is deep and satisfying. “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] Believe the invitation, and ask of the precious Saviour the things you know that you need and have not yet received. Surrender yourself unreservedly to Him who gave His life for you. As you do this, you will receive power to become a son of God. You will then be the Lord’s helping hand, reaching out to help others to step up on to the platform of eternal truth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Are you one that makes mistakes? Go to Jesus, and ask Him to forgive you, and then believe that He does. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” [1 John 1:9.] Ask the Lord to pardon your errors. Then rejoice in Him. It will not help you in the least to keep mourning over your defects. Say, “Lord, I cast my helpless soul on Thee, and Thee alone. I will not worry, because Thou hast said, ‘Ask, and ye shall receive.’” [John 16:24.] Believe that you do receive. Believe that your Saviour is full of compassion, full of tender pity and love. Let not little mishaps trouble you. Small mistakes may be ordered by the Lord to save you from making larger mistakes.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

I am receiving invitations to attend the Los Angeles camp-meeting. I do not feel it wise for me to go lest I shall unwisely and unnecessarily tax my physical and mental powers and unfit myself for my writings which I wish to place in consistent form to be used. I thank the Lord that He does give me clearness of mind to write many things. My heart is full of thanksgiving to God that the precious truth is so clear and distinct, given in no uncertain sound. Our sufficiency and strength are not created by ourselves. Let us keep closely linked up with our Saviour. Oh, let us come in humility before God, but trustingly, believing His encouraging words: “Ask and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Sometimes when you pray for God’s blessing, you do not realize it at the very moment that you ask for the blessing. But will you get up from your knees, and say, I have not received that for which I have prayed? We can sympathize with you, although at a distance from you. I would say, Do not give up hope, but cling to the promise, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] Yet do not feel discouraged if He who can do the work of healing, He who knows the end from the beginning, permits His child to die, to rise in the morning of the resurrection. Say, “Not my will, but Thine, O God, be done.” [Luke 22:42.] The Lord understands what is to come upon our world. The end of all things is at hand.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

Verse 9. Shall we not hear Him? I am ready to hear you. Seek, said Christ,—it is just in harmony with what Christ said, “Ask and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] There are no ifs or ands about it, “Ye shall receive.” Do you do it? Or do you go and tell your neighbor of all your troubles and all your difficulties? Can they help you? You want to be educated that you have got a promise from the Lord God of hosts, and you are going to take that promise and you are going to depend upon it, and you are going to ask, for He has said, “Ye shall receive.” He still goes on to give us the promise threefold. “Seek, and ye shall find ... opened unto you.” [Matthew 7:7.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

As yet the disciples were unacquainted with the Saviour’s unlimited resources and power. He said to them, “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name” (John 16:24). He explained that the secret of their success would be in asking for strength and grace in His name. He would be present before the Father to make request for them. The prayer of the humble suppliant He presents as His own desire in that soul’s behalf. Every sincere prayer is heard in heaven. It may not be fluently expressed; but if the heart is in it, it will ascend to the sanctuary where Jesus ministers, and He will present it to the Father without one awkward, stammering word, beautiful and fragrant with the incense of His own perfection.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

I must do all that I can to co-operate with Him, giving the afflicted eye as much rest as possible. I have decided not to write so largely by lamplight. For sometime after I awoke this morning, I lay still in bed, pleading the promise, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] I went to sleep, and when I again awoke, it was half-past three. My brethren and sisters, let us take God at His word and seek Him in simple faith. Heaven is waiting to open opportunities before those who will walk before God in true simplicity. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” [Matthew 7:7, 8.] We do not go to God and ask Him in simplicity for the things that we need. Let us cultivate a truer humility and a firmer dependence upon Him than we have. Until we come to Him as the disciples came before the day of Pentecost, He cannot co-operate with us as fully as He desires. When we yield ourselves fully to Him, He will work as the case requires. All our needs are embraced in the promise, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

May the Lord bless her and heal her and graciously reveal to her His power, and may her voice be heard in the assembly of God’s people. Christ is our healing power. Let faith take hold of the promise and claim the assurance, “Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” [Matthew 7:7.] Do not give up the battle to the enemy. Every one of us that <has experienced the love of> Christ is to make Him known by word and by actions. We are to let our light shine <forth> by calling upon others, by studying the Scriptures with them, by praying with them, and in this way we shall find life. But it has been coming in among <many of> us to feel that our very life, as it were, depended upon our getting in to first place. If we were fitted for it, God would have provided that we should be first. The very ones that are less prepared to carry through the subjects that we must carry through are the ones that feel this way. Seek the Lord as little children; come to Him as a child comes to his parents; ask Him to teach you and to lead you and <to guide you, and> then say, I believe, <my Saviour,> because You have said it: “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

Is not God saying today to His praying, trusting, believing workers, who are opening the Scriptures to those ignorant of the precious truth they contain: “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world”? We must have [such] love for Jesus that we will consider it a privilege to suffer and even die for His sake. We may tell the Lord all our trials, tell Him all our weaknesses, tell Him all our dependence upon His might and His power. This is true prayer. If ever there was a time when the Spirit of grace and supplication was needed to be poured out upon us, God Himself indicting our prayers, it is now. And the promise is to be brought before every church and the simplicity of truth dwelt upon. “Ask and ye shall receive.” John 16:24. Shall we be less earnest than were the apostles? Shall we not by living faith claim the promises that moved them to the depths of their being to call upon the Lord Jesus for the fulfillment of his word, “Ask, and ye shall receive”? John 16:24. Is not the Spirit of God to come today in answer to earnest, persevering prayer, and fill men with power? Is not God saying today to his praying, trusting, believing workers, who are opening the Scriptures to those ignorant of the precious truth they contain, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world”? Matthew 28:20. Why, then, is the church so weak and spiritless? The Review and Herald

The disciples were unacquainted with the Saviour’s unlimited resources and power. He said to them, “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name.” John 16:24. As Christ intercedes in our behalf, the Father lays open all the treasures of His grace for our appropriation, to be enjoyed and to be communicated to others. Ask in My name, Christ says; I do not say that I will pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loveth you, because you have loved Me. Make use of My name. This will give your prayers efficiency, and the Father will give you the riches of His grace; wherefore, “ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:24.Testimony Treasures, vol. 1

Every saint who comes to God with a true heart, and sends his honest petitions to Him in faith, will have his prayers answered. Your faith must not let go of the promises of God, if you do not see or feel the immediate answer to your prayers. Be not afraid to trust God. Rely upon His sure promise: “Ask, and ye shall receive.” John 16:24. God is too wise to err, and too good to withhold any good thing from His saints that walk uprightly. Man is erring, and although his petitions are sent up from an honest heart, he does not always ask for the things that are good for himself, or that will glorify God. When this is so, our wise and good Father hears our prayers, and will answer, sometimes immediately; but He gives us the things that are for our best good and His own glory. God gives us blessings; if we could look into His plan, we would clearly see that He knows what is best for us and that our prayers are answered. Nothing hurtful is given, but the blessing we need, in the place of something we asked for that would not be good for us, but to our hurt. From Here to Forever

I answered, “Christ’s life was indeed a life of hardness. He was a burden-bearer for the whole race. ‘He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed’ [Isaiah 53:5]. But Jesus is not held up to the people in the true light. He was filled with grief because the great blessings He came to bring to man, man would not see and accept, but continued to choose the hard path of transgression. He says, ‘Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life’ [John 5:20]. He is the joy and light of the world. ‘He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness’ [John 8:12]. Show moral courage, fortitude, a becoming meekness and appropriate zeal, Edson. The eyes of angels are upon you constantly. Be circumspect, live for God, for heaven. Adorn your profession with a well-ordered life and godly conversation. Seek to do good. Help those who need help. Pray much, this is your strength. Says Christ, Ask and ye shall receive. The Need of Preaching Christ
GW92 41.1
A vital connection with the Chief Shepherd will make the under-shepherd a living representative of Christ, a light indeed to the world. An understanding of all points of our faith is indeed essential, but it is of greater importance that the minister shall be sanctified through the truth which he presents for the purpose of enlightening the consciences of his hearers. In a series of meetings not one discourse should be given consisting of theory alone, nor should one long, tedious prayer be made. Such prayers God does not hear. I have listened to many prosy, sermonizing prayers that were uncalled for and out of place. A prayer with one half the number of words, offered in fervor and faith, would have softened the hearts of the hearers; but instead of this, I have seen them wait impatiently, as though wishing that every word would end the prayer. Had the minister wrestled with God in his chamber until he felt that his faith could grasp the eternal promise, “Ask, and ye shall receive,” [John 16:24.] he would have come to the point at once, asking with earnestness and faith for what he needed.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

Remember, the ear of the Lord is open to our prayers. “Ask and ye shall receive, seek and ye shall find.” “If ye being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give his Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” [John 16:24; Luke 11:9, 13.] Then why not take God at His word? Why not believe with all the heart and mind and soul? Why not by faith take hold of the divine nature? It is our privilege. All things shall be done for him that believeth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

I know that very much depends upon every action of ours now, and none of self and all of Jesus will bring us into unity of the faith. We cannot always be upon our knees in prayer, but the way to the throne of God is always open. While engaged in active labor we may ask, and we are promised by One who will not deceive us, “we shall receive.” [John 16:24.] The Christian can and will find time to pray. Daniel was a statesman, yet three times a day he sought God, and the Lord gave him of His Holy Spirit. So, today, men may resort to the most sacred pavilion of the most High and feel the assurance of His promise, “My people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” [Isaiah 32:18.] All, who really desire it, can find a place for communion with God where no ear can hear but the One open to the cries of the helpless, distressed, and needy.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

The Lord Jesus knew the necessity for prayer. The often repeated injunction was given to His disciples, “Watch and pray.” [Mark 13:33.] And Jesus bids His disciples to return to a closet for secret prayer. He says, “Men ought always to pray and not to faint.” [Luke 18:1.] There must be constant looking unto Jesus in all our perplexities. Simple faith takes hold on the promise and becomes, when exercised intelligently, a living reality—faith that works, that grasps the eternal efficiency. Satan will taunt and mock us when with mind and soul and will we begin to believe that Christ is indeed ours and we begin to enjoy the peace that [comes from] a reliable faith that grasps the sure promises. “Ask,” saith He that is Truth, “and ye shall receive” [John 16:24], [and then] we do drink of the living waters of life.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Every saint who comes to God with a true heart, and sends his honest petitions to him in faith, will have his prayers answered. Your faith must not let go of the promises of God, if you do not see or feel the immediate answer to your prayers. Be not afraid to trust God. This class have been sadly neglected. The workers have judged from appearance and have taken it as a certainty that they would labor in vain. But these persons whom God has gifted, ministers and people, are to be laid hold of by the hand of living faith. Let the workers grasp the promises of God, saying, “Thou hast promised, ask, and ye shall receive. [John 16:24.] I must have this soul converted to Jesus Christ.” Solicit prayer for the souls for whom you labor; present them before the church as objects for their supplication. It will be just what the church needs, to have their minds called from their little, petty difficulties, to feel a great burden, a personal interest, for a soul that is ready to perish. Select another and still another soul, daily seeking guidance from God, laying everything before Him in earnest prayer, and working in divine wisdom. As you do this you will see that God will give the Holy Spirit to convict, and the power of the truth to convert the soul.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Individually we are to wait upon the Lord, putting our petitions before Him. I feel so distressed over the matter of Elder Olsen going on and on in the face of so great light. How he can be excusable I cannot define. He has acted like a blind man, like a man dazed. Their hearts, their sympathies and feelings cannot sympathize upon the most momentous of all topics, the Holy Spirit’s manifestation. “Ask and ye shall receive.” “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children; how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” [John 16:24; Luke 11:13.] The Lord was anxious to do more, much more, for His people than they could conceive of, in His benevolence toward man, His unexampled love as opposed to their limited conceptions of His goodness.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

The mind must be brought in contact with God. Our confidence in human agencies must be shaken, but our confidence in God will be firm, constant, and unshaken. We must have a knowledge of God and of the truth as it is in Jesus. When we all have a great desire to save souls, in accordance with the great love that Christ has expressed for perishing souls by giving His life a sacrifice, and taking the curse of sin upon Himself, we shall have great earnestness and perseverance. I am distressed that our ministers make long prayers in their service and preach a discourse to the Lord, and everything is brought into the prayers but the fervency of the Holy Spirit. Prayer is a holy exercise of the soul and should consist is supplication from a pure heart, softened and subdued, and drawn out after God for a renewal of His Holy Spirit, from a humble heart, seeking the correct understanding of truth. When the soul loses sight of self it is evidence that it is in communion with God. Let us educate ourselves that prayer is a sacred, pure, solemn exercise, in which the human being of the dust is in communion with God. There is no exhibition of self, but we are to tell the Lord what we desire for our souls’ interest. He says, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] Take right hold of God, whom we need.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

Last week Elder Haskell wrote me a few lines inquiring if I would take the services Sabbath at 11 a.m. W. C. White was to conduct services at Dora Creek. I answered that I was trying to put every jot of my vitality into my writings, and that having been unable to sleep past two o’clock, I dare not take the extra labor. At the commencement of the Sabbath I sought the Lord most earnestly for physical strength, mental clearness, and moral power. I urged my petition, pleading the promise of God, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] When I awoke on Sabbath morning, and looked at my watch, I was surprised to see that the short [hand] hour pointed to five o’clock. This is such a rare thing that I knew the Lord had answered my prayer. I thanked the Lord with my heart and voice. I felt so much refreshed that I sent Ernest to Brother Haskell to say that I would speak that morning.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Make up your minds: “I shall not die, but live to declare the works of the Lord.” [Psalm 118:17.] He will heal you if you come to Him in full faith and rest in His love. Be happy, be cheerful, be hopeful. Let us draw nigh and still nigher to God, in full confidence in faith. Do not let us as Seventh-day Adventists loosen faith in our Great Physician. Take right hold on the power of God: Thou hast said it, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] Pray for the Holy Spirit to be poured out upon the workers. Thus God has planned it, and I am instructed to say to you: Hold fast. Do not descend to any cheap ideal. God has planned, therefore rise by faith and practice. Rise by human endeavor co-operating with the divine. God sees the human agent struggling with great difficulties, but reach up. His promise is, “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] Say, “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me,” even me. [Genesis 32:26.] Sanctify me, and make me fit for the Master’s use. Great light comes to man as he sees the privileges that are for him. He sees God’s plans for him and he dies to self. He sees that he has been working with all his powers to do some great and wonderful thing, when he was continually at cross-purposes with his Master. Every worker, whether a child, a youth, or a person of mature age, is to put on Christ, that is, seek him in prayer and believe that the prayer is accepted by God. He has been charged to watch and pray without ceasing. Some pray during the Week of Prayer, and then suppose that their praying is to cease. They do not continue in prayer, and therefore they do not receive. They must continue to ask, that they may receive. “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] Seek me, and ye shall find me close beside you, ready to shield, to help and bless you. I will lead the current of your thoughts away from cheap, frivolous things. I will open to you subjects the contemplation of which will bring you My peace, My joy, My consolation, and these will take away your worries. Our powers are not to be employed and worn out in bearing responsibilities which belong to God, which He has not given the human agent. It has been the meetinghouse in Newcastle since the camp meeting there was closed. We need means, in this locality as well as in Hamilton, for the building of this house. I am seeking the Lord in prayer and I think many are praying. True conversion is a change of heart and thoughts and purposes. Evil habits, tobacco-using, liquor-drinking will be given up. Coffee is a stimulant, and its use is a warring lust, destructive to soul and body. This also is to be put aside. As the candidate enters upon the work of serving the Lord, the sins of evil-speaking, of jealousy, of disobedience are seen in their true character. The warfare is begun, to be continued against every evil trait of character. I cannot tell you how many letters came to me across the broad Pacific, when I was in Australia, asking for counsel. What did Christ promise His disciples if they would believe in Him as their personal Saviour? “Lo, I am with you alway,” He said, “even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Again, He says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee.” [See Isaiah 41:13.] Think of how many promises He has given us, which we may grasp by the hand of faith. When we go to the Source of power, we know that we shall receive that intelligence and wisdom which comes from a pure source, which is not mixed with anything of humanity. As we pray, it is our privilege to know that God wants us to pray, to ask Him for help. “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] It is for you to believe that you will receive. Is not God saying today to His praying, trusting, believing workers, who are opening the Scriptures to those ignorant of the precious truth they contain, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world”? But we must come, not in a spirit of self-justification, but with humility, repenting of our sins. He is able to help us, willing to do more than we ask or think. Chapter 20—Praying In The Name of Jesus
Pr 218.2
As yet the disciples were unacquainted with the Saviour’s unlimited resources and power. He said to them, “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in My name.” John 16:24. He explained that the secret of their success would be in asking for strength and grace in His name. He would be present before the Father to make request for them. The prayer of the humble suppliant He presents as His own desire in that soul’s behalf. Every sincere prayer is heard in heaven. It may not be fluently expressed; but if the heart is in it, it will ascend to the sanctuary where Jesus ministers, and He will present it to the Father without one awkward, stammering word, beautiful and fragrant with the incense of His own perfection.—(The Desire of Ages, 667.)Pr 219.2
Jesus said, “Ye shall ask in My name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: for the Father Himself loveth you.”“I have chosen you: ... that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in My name, He may give it you.” John 16:26, 27; John 15:16. But to pray in the name of Jesus is something more than a mere mention of that name at the beginning and the ending of a prayer. It is to pray in the mind and spirit of Jesus, while we believe His promises, rely upon His grace, and work His works.—(Steps to Christ, 100, 101.)Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Make use of My name. This will give your prayers efficiency, and the Father will give you the riches of His grace. As we come in the name of Christ, the Father’s heart of love is open to hear us and to bestow upon us all the riches of His grace. “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [Verse 24.] “Whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” [John 14:13.] All the human encouragement we could receive falls far short of the divine assurance.John 16:24-33

Jesus said, “Ye shall ask in My name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: for the Father Himself loveth you.” ... John 16:26, 27.... Chapter 8—The Teacher of Truth the Only Safe Educator
CE 75.2
O what an assurance is this, that the love of God may abide in the hearts of all who believe in him! O what salvation is provided; for he is able to save unto the uttermost all that come unto God by him. In wonder we exclaim, How can these things be? But Jesus will be satisfied with nothing less than this. Those who are partakers of his sufferings here, of his humiliation, enduring for his name’s sake, are to have the love of God bestowed upon them as it was upon the Son. One who knows, has said, “The Father himself loveth you.” [John 16:27.] One who has had an experimental knowledge of the length, and breadth, and height, and depth of that love, has declared unto us this amazing fact. This love is ours through faith in the Son of God, therefore a connection with Christ means everything to us. We are to be one with him as he is one with the Father, and then we are beloved by the infinite God as members of the body of Christ, as branches of the living Vine. We are to be attached to the parent stock, and to receive nourishment from the Vine. Christ is our glorified Head, and the divine love flowing from the heart of God, rests in Christ, and is communicated to those who have been united to him. This divine love entering the soul inspires it with gratitude, frees it from its spiritual feebleness, from pride, vanity, and selfishness, and from all that would deform the Christian character.Faith and Works

There are those who have known the pardoning love of Christ and who really desire to be children of God, yet they realize that their character is imperfect, their life faulty, and they are ready to doubt whether their hearts have been renewed by the Holy Spirit. To such I would say, Do not draw back in despair. We shall often have to bow down and weep at the feet of Jesus because of our shortcomings and mistakes, but we are not to be discouraged. Even if we are overcome by the enemy, we are not cast off, not forsaken and rejected of God. No; Christ is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. “God is love.” [1 John 4:8.] He showed us that He loved us by giving His well-beloved Son to die for our sins. The angels wondered at God’s love when they saw that He “so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish (come to nothing) but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] Jesus said, “The Father himself loveth you.” [John 16:27.] God loves us, not because He gave His Son for us, but He loves us so much that He gave His well-beloved Son, so that we might believe in His tender love toward us. God gave His Son to suffer with us and for us, but in the pain that Christ suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross of Calvary, the great God, the Father of all, the Heart of unmeasured love, suffered also, and in Christ paid the price of our salvation.7LtMs, Ms 45, 1892, par. 27
Though the murderous throng are surprised and awed by what they have seen and felt, yet they are ready to lay hands upon Him as they see the boldness of Judas, who dared to touch the person of Him whom they had just seen glorified. But the disciples did not think that He would give Himself up into the hands of His enemies, and they were offended when they saw that He did not intend to free Himself from their hands. Then they forsook Him and fled, leaving their Master alone. Christ has told them in the upper chamber that they would forsake Him in this manner. He had said, “Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.” [John 16:32.]John 16:31-32

Oh, how I want daily to press close to Jesus, for He knows. The deep humanity of the soul of Christ was full of fine sensibilities. The human who stood in need of a friend and who needed his sympathy! Jesus felt a sense of solitude and loneliness at times, when He said, “I am not alone, the Father is with Me.” [John 16:32.] These words express a struggle, an inward conflict and reasoning, a suggestion to His mind, hence the reply. He said, “You will leave Me alone.” Those who understood Him best only did so partially. The disciples thought they knew the Lord. Jesus said, “Do ye now believe? Behold, the hour cometh that ye shall be scattered every man to his own, and shall leave Me alone.” [Verses 31, 32.]John 16:32

Following this suggestion, “they all forsook Him, and fled.” But Christ had foretold this desertion, “Behold,” He had said, “the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave Me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.” John 16:32.The Story of Jesus

The stability and nobility of the Christian character is estimated in heaven by the strength drawn from the armory of heaven to war successfully against the mighty foe. The soul who thus battles with the enemy makes manifest his reliance upon a power mightier than the strong man armed. He is registered in the books of heaven as uncontaminated by the pollutions of the world. He is a partaker of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. When we patiently endure temptation, standing strong in His strength who hath said, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33), we reveal the development of the graces of the Spirit that make us complete in Him.Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 1

What is our path to heaven? Is it a road with every inviting convenience? No, it is a path that is narrow and apparently inconvenient; it is a path of conflict, of trial, of tribulation and suffering. Our Captain, Jesus Christ, has hid nothing from us in regard to the battles we are to fight. He opens the map before us and shows us the way. “Strive,” He says, “to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able” (Luke 13:24). “Wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat” (Matthew 7:13). “In the world ye shall have tribulation” (John 16:33). The apostle echoes the words of Christ, “We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom” (Acts 14:22). “In the world ye shall have tribulation” (John 16:33), says Christ; but in Me ye shall have peace. The trials to which Christians are subjected in sorrow, adversity, and reproach are the means appointed of God to separate the chaff from the wheat. Our pride, selfishness, evil passions, and love of worldly pleasure must all be overcome; therefore God sends us afflictions to test and prove us, and show us that these evils exist in our characters. We must overcome through His strength and grace, that we may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. “For our light affliction,” says Paul, “which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:17, 18). Afflictions, crosses, temptations, adversity, and our varied trials are God’s workmen to refine us, sanctify us, and fit us for the heavenly garner.47Testimonies for the Church 3:115.Sons and Daughters of God

And while much of the fruit of their labor is not apparent in this life, God’s workers have His sure promise of ultimate success. As the world’s Redeemer, Christ was constantly confronted with apparent failure. He seemed to do little of the work which He longed to do in uplifting and saving. Satanic agencies were constantly working to obstruct His way. But He would not be discouraged. Ever before Him He saw the result of His mission. He knew that truth would finally triumph in the contest with evil, and to His disciples He said: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33. If we can bear persecution for His dear name’s sake, His love becomes a ruling power in our hearts, for we have the assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. Never is the tempest-tried soul more dearly loved by his Saviour than when he is suffering reproach for the truth’s sake. When for the truth’s sake the believer stands at the bar of unrighteous tribunals, Christ stands by his side. All the reproaches that fall upon the human believer fall upon Christ in the person of His saints. “I will love him,” said Christ, “and will manifest myself to him” (John 14:21). Christ is condemned over again in the person of His believing disciples. When for the truth’s sake the believer is incarcerated in prison walls, Christ manifests Himself to him and ravishes his heart with His love. When he suffers death for the sake of Christ, Christ says to him, They may kill the body, but they cannot hurt the soul. “Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).32Letter 116, 1896.The Acts of the Apostles

He has been tempted in all points as we are tempted, and just the right kind of help has been provided for us, that if we only put our feet in the prints of Jesus’ footsteps, we will be safe. He has hallowed the path His feet have trod. We hear His inviting voice, “Follow Me. I am the Light of the world. They that follow Me shall not walk in darkness. In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (see Matthew 4:19; John 8:12; 16:33).To Be Like Jesus

The life of Christ’s disciples is to be like His, a series of uninterrupted victories, not seen to be such here, but recognized as such in the great hereafter.—Testimonies for the Church 6:305-307.Sermons and Talks, vol. 1

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24). If you center your thoughts upon the world, you will be worldly; you cannot help but be. But if you weave into your life the principles of heaven, keeping your attention fixed on Christ, you will be prepared for association with the angels. Remember that God wants you to bring Christ into your business transactions just as surely as into the house of prayer. He wants us to bear the testimony that in a world corrupted by sin, human beings can live untainted by worldliness. He wants us to show that we are standing under the bloodstained banner of prince Emmanuel. He does not tell us that the path to heaven is a smooth one. He takes us to an eminence and shows us the powers of darkness arrayed against us. But He tells us that more than men are in the army fighting on the side of right. “Be of good cheer,” he says, “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).The Bible Echo

“These things I have spoken unto you,” He said, “that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33.) Christ did not fail, neither was He discouraged; and the disciples were to show a faith of the same enduring nature. They were to work as He had worked, depending on Him for strength. Though their way would be obstructed by apparent impossibilities, yet by His grace they were to go forward, despairing of nothing and hoping for everything.—The Acts of the Apostles, 22, 23.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 1 (1844 - 1868)

Our Saviour does not leave His followers in ignorance as to what is before them in the spiritual warfare. With simplicity and faithfulness He lays open before them the character of the warfare in which He asks them to engage. He urges them to count the cost. He points them to the vast confederacy of evil arrayed against them, but He tells them that they will not fight alone, that God and the angels will fight with them if they will faithfully act their part, steadfastly resisting the temptations of the enemy. “Be of good cheer,” He says, “I have overcome the world. While the Lord Jesus shows us the vast confederacy of evil we must meet for principalities and powers are arrayed against us, He tells us we struggle for an invisible world. The whole universe of heaven are watching the conflict, and if our eyes could be opened we would see angels in the ranks, for the Holy Spirit is promised to all who fight manfully the battles of the Lord. There are soldiers engaged in the battle who are not perfect, compassed with infirmities, falling into sin, ignorant, and needing instruction at every step; but to feel their need, to sense their poverty, is essential before they can be helped. When they fall upon the Rock and are broken then the everlasting arms are around the helpless. Heavenly agencies are employed to do their work, fit them as vessels of honor, overpowering the enemies, piercing the cloud and shadow of Satanic agencies. The heavenly instrumentalities surround them with an element of light—even the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness. The Captain of the Lord’s host leads them to the field of battle with these words, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. “Strive,” He says, “to enter in at the straight gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” [Luke 13:24.] “Wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.” [Matthew 7:13.] “In the world ye shall have tribulation.” John 16:33. You shall become changed into His likeness if you have chosen Him as your Counselor. Your confessions should be to Christ. Never confess to any man unless you have wronged him. Jesus Christ is the one that bears our sins. Many think they do not want religion if it would do no more for them than it does for Brother X. The Bible, the garden of God, is full of rich promises. I long to see the Spirit of God striving with human hearts, and the souls who have been in darkness thirsting for God, and the hearts, fully determined in their purpose of entire surrender to God, cultivating higher views and aiming for a loftier standard, carrying their way through the hellish shadow of Satan cast athwart their path to intercept their progress to the throne of God. They are striving for the mastery of some easy besetting sin, sometimes defeated and sometimes with the shout of victory on their lips as the defeat is turned into victory, because they trusted less to themselves, and pressed onward in the name of Jesus, repeating His words, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.] As the compass to the pole, with certain movements still pointing to the glorious attraction Jesus, with increased humility and stronger faith, and courage that will not die, and love that becomes more and more intense, the warfare is continued, fighting at every step the good fight of faith.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

There the heavenly boughs hang over this side of the wall by the Holy Spirit. When we patiently endure temptations, standing strong in His strength who hath said, “Fear not; I have overcome the world” [John 16:33], we reveal the development of the graces of the Spirit which makes us complete in Him.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

But in man’s behalf Christ met the specious temptations of Satan, and left to man an example as to how to overcome Satan in the conflict. He exhorts His followers, saying, “Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.] Satan has made masterly efforts to perpetuate sin. He arrayed all his evil agencies to war against Jesus Christ in an active, desperate conflict, in order that he might bruise the heart of infinite love. He seduced the people to bow to idols, and thus gained supremacy over earthly kingdoms. He considered that to be the god of this world was the next best thing to gain possession of the throne of God in heaven. In a large measure he has been successful in his plans and has led the people to reject Christ in His holy character, and to choose Barabbas who in character represented Satan, the god of this world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The Lord would do large things for man in giving him heavenly endowments, doing to his disciple today as he did to them of old, if he could entrust large blessings to them, and they could bear them. Satan has tempted men to weave themselves into all that they do for God, and with every spiritual connection, that God cannot bestow his rich blessing, because men would exalt themselves, misinterpret and misapply the heavenly gift. A greater than Moses or Joshua is among us, and when we fully realize this fact, and will roll back all the glory to God and to him alone, then the Lord can safely bless his people, and lead them on to victory. We need to understand that all power in heaven and in earth has been committed to the Captain of our salvation, who said for our encouragement, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] “Be of good cheer I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.] Then let us take heed to the injunction of Christ, and not be found guilty of either receiving or giving a title to men that belongs only unto the Lord God of hosts. It is our privilege to understand that God loves us as He loves His Son. When we believe in Christ as our personal Saviour, the peace of Christ is ours. The reconciliation provided for us in the atonement of Christ is the foundation of our peace. But gloomy feelings are no evidence that the promises of God are of no effect. You look at your feelings, and because your outlook is not all brightness, you begin to draw more closely the garment of heaviness about your soul. You look within yourself and think that God is forsaking you. You are to look to Christ. “In me,” Christ says, “ye shall have peace.” [John 16:33.] Entering into communion with our Saviour, we enter the region of peace. There are souls perishing. They must know the terms of salvation. They must be taught that the conditions of acceptance are the same now as they were in Adam’s day—obedience to all God’s commandments. Many appear to be entombed in the darkness of ignorance, entrenched behind an invincible barrier—full of error taught them by priest and ruler;—but bear in mind that heavenly intelligences are working with the human agents. Jesus, Name Above All Names
Advocate at the Throne of God, March 1
JNN 69.3
In obedience to Christ’s command, they waited in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father—the outpouring of the Spirit. They did not wait in idleness. The record says that they were “continually in the temple, praising and blessing God” (Luke 24:53). They also met together to present their requests to the Father in the name of Jesus. They knew that they had a Representative in heaven, an Advocate at the throne of God. In solemn awe they bowed in prayer, repeating the assurance, “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in My name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full” (John 16:23, 24). Higher and still higher they extended the hand of faith, with the mighty argument, “It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us” (Romans 8:34).
