The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.

Introduction—The Vineyard of the Lord

PK 22.3

Let Israel hope in God. The Master of the vineyard is even now gathering from among men of all nations and peoples the precious fruits for which He has long been waiting. Soon He will come unto His own; and in that glad day His eternal purpose for the house of Israel will finally be fulfilled. “He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.” Verse 6.

PK 22.2

“Sing ye unto her, A vineyard of red wine. I the Lord do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.” Isaiah 27:2, 3.

Now, let us pass to the twenty-seventh chapter of Isaiah: “In that day sing ye unto her, A vineyard of red wine. I the Lord do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.” We have been picturing the work of the church of God. While her work is glorious, her membership is weak. God, in his infinite plan, has arranged that a perfect work shall be done by a combination of imperfect people. But, brethren, the Lord wants us to look upon the church as he regards it, and sing its praises, for he says, “I the Lord do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.... Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me. He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.” Verses 2, 3, 5, 6.

This vineyard represents the Jewish church, and of it God writes, “The vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant.” “In that day sing ye unto her, A vineyard of red wine. I the Lord do keep it; I will water it every moment; lest any hurt it I will keep it day and night. Fury is not in me; who would set the briars and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them altogether. ... He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root; Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.” [Isaiah 5:7; 27:2-4, 6.]

Christ’s Object Lessons

Chapter 17—“Spare it this Year Also”

COL 218.1

With what unwearied love did Christ minister to Israel during the period of added probation. Upon the cross He prayed, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34. After His ascension the gospel was preached first at Jerusalem. There the Holy Spirit was poured out. There the first gospel church revealed the power of the risen Saviour. There Stephen—“his face as it had been the face of an angel” (Acts 6:15)—bore his testimony and laid down his life. All that heaven itself could give was bestowed. “What could have been done more to My vineyard,” Christ said, “that I have not done in it?” Isaiah 5:4. So His care and labor for you are not lessened, but increased. Still He says, “I the Lord do keep it; I will water it every moment; lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.” Isaiah 27:3.

You do great injustice to my Saviour when you walk as though in the shadow of darkness. You are never to walk in the fire and sparks of your own kindling, subject to feelings and emotions. They that follow me “shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” [John 8:12.] There is a positive promise. Now if you are following another leader than Christ, who is light and truth, and life, leave that leader at once, and follow Jesus, the light of the world. Is the Lord pleased to have you tossed about as the restless waves of the sea? No! No! I tell you, He bids you, be strengthened, stablished, rooted, and grounded, and built up in the most holy faith. “Ye are not your own.” [1 Corinthians 6:19.]

The church of Thyatira is represented as full of zeal and activity; but her charities and zeal are endangered by false teachers. This is our danger today. We need now to arouse and let our labors be marked with far greater earnestness than they have been. The Lord’s care of His church is shown in the words of the prophet: “I the Lord do keep it; I will water it every moment; lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.” [Isaiah 27:3.] The same diligence and zeal are to be revealed in the labors of those who are His representatives. To those who work in faith and self-sacrifice, the promise is given, “A little one shall become a thousand, and a [small] one a great nation.” [Isaiah 60:22.]

Child Guidance

Chapter 73—Responsibility for Eternal Interests

CG 478.3

Gather up the rays of divine light that are shining upon your pathway. Walk in the light as Christ is in the light. As you take hold of the work of helping your children to serve God, the most provoking trials will come; but do not lose your hold; cling to Jesus. He says, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” Isaiah 27:5. Difficulties will arise; you will meet with obstacles; but look constantly to Jesus. When an emergency arises, ask, Lord, what shall I do now? If you refuse to fret or scold, the Lord will show you the way. He will help you to use the talent of speech in so Christlike a way that peace and love will reign in the home. By following a consistent course of action, you may be evangelists in the home, ministers of grace to your children.26Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 156, 157.

A Helping Hand for the Despairing, October 15

It is fellowship with Christ, personal contact with a living Saviour, that enables the mind and heart and soul to triumph over the lower nature. Tell the wanderer of an almighty Hand that will hold him up, of an infinite humanity in Christ that pities him. It is not enough for him to believe in law and force, things that have no pity and never hear the call for help. He needs to clasp a hand that is warm, to trust in a heart full of tenderness. Keep his mind stayed on the thought of a divine presence ever beside him, ever looking upon him with pitying love. Bid him think of a Father’s heart that ever grieves over sin, of a Father’s hand stretched out still, of a Father’s voice saying, “Let him take hold of my strength, and make peace with me ...” (Isaiah 27:5).

“Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.” [Verse 11.] Thus will angels minister to every soul who under temptation will resist Satan. Angels are appointed, “sent forth to minister to them that shall be heirs of salvation,” [to] minister unto them as they ministered unto Christ who was the Substitute and Surety of all who will receive Him. [Hebrews 1:14.] “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” [John 1:12.] They occupy no middle ground. They are the subjects of faith and repentance, and are embraced in the promise, entitled through grace to come into relation with God as those whom he has addressed. “And let him take hold of my strength and make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.]

The Lord is just as accessible in South Africa as He is in Battle Creek. He has never told Philip, Peter, John Wessels, or any of His people to make Battle Creek their God. He would have His people in South Africa take hold of His efficiency. His word is, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] The vein of silver must be worked; the shaft sunk deeper and deeper into the mine of truth.

I will heed the words of the Lord: “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] Ever remember that you have One by your side who says to you, “Be not afraid.” “I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.] Bear in mind that Christ came as the Prince of heaven, and has engaged in an eternal warfare against the principles of sin. All who will unite with Christ will be workers together with God in this warfare.

“Let him take hold of my strength and make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] Our part is to take hold of His strength in our weakness and peril. He interposes between us and the difficulties that appear so formidable. The flame and flood are behind Him. Then lift Him up, the Man of Calvary, lift Him up with voice and with song, and let the melody of thanksgiving and praise ascend to heaven in your life-service to God. Keep cheerful, full of faith and courage and hope. Elijah was subject to like passions as we are, yet the Lord was His strength. He prayed most earnestly, and the Lord heard his prayer.

The living Christ demands self-denial and strong faith. Circumstances cannot rule the life. The child of God, the heir of heaven, cannot drift hither and thither. There must be a fastening to Christ, a believing in Him. “Let him take hold of my strength,” says Christ, “and make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] Then no evil sentiments will be cherished. Then the child of God will not be as a ship at sea without an anchor, tossed about by the winds and waves. Nothing can make a man of sin if by faith he lays hold of Christ and clings to Him.

In this work He makes man His co-laborer. Therefore in keeping the commandments and in proclaiming the soon coming of our Saviour, we are “laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Are we not in good company? Remember this; bear in mind constantly that you work in full view of the whole universe of heaven. Not a sparrow falls without notice. And we are called upon to lay hold of the divine power that we may rightly represent our Master. “Let him lay hold of my strength.” [Isaiah 27:5.] It is the will of God that we should reveal Him to men and to angels, and He provides us with strength to do this. Even His mighty power, which He wrought in Christ when He raised Him from the dead.

Come, Philip, do not neglect to heed this appeal I make you. Eternal life is worth striving for, and erring human beings are encouraged to draw nigh to God, to make use of every means of grace provided for them. Christ says, “Let him take hold of my strength and make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] This means that you are to come to the Lord, confessing that you have dishonored Him, transgressed His holy commandments, and pray for forgiveness; and He will pardon your transgressions, He will forgive your sins. Come to the Lord just as you are, and ask Him to help you to the light. As a child in want, come to your heavenly Father. Trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

During this week, W. C. White had an attack of influenza, and although unable to speak from hoarseness, he accompanied me in the early morning exercises. He would not consent to remain at home, but attended all the meetings. We felt an intense desire that all that could possible be done should be done to make these meetings that which God would have them. We knew of ourselves that we could do nothing, but that if we would do the part appointed us by God, and which He had a right to expect of us, we might expect Him to be our efficiency. Every soul who will in contrition of heart become sensible of his defects of character, and will personally approach the footstool of mercy; every soul who will believe that the Lord is listening to every word he utters in repentance and confession, who bares his heart for His inspection, will receive the fulfillment of His promise, “Let him take hold of my strength and make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] The Holy Spirit makes the conscience faithful to do its entrusted work.

Christ has made it possible for man to rise in moral value with God. By resisting all wrong, by subduing the evil temper, selfishness, and pride, he may attain to the righteousness of Christ. Man is to become one with Christ in God. Sin is degrading, and there is no place for it in heaven. It is our privilege to have the power of self-control, and if we do not have it we reveal that sin still reigns in our mortal bodies. In Christ is all sufficiency for a self-directed life. “Let him take hold of my strength, and make peace with me,” He says, “and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.]

Gratitude should be cultivated in every heart. Christ is our tower of strength, and Satan can have no power over the soul who walks with God in humility of mind. The promise is, “Let him take hold of my strength and make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] There is perfect and complete help for every tempted, tried soul. There will always be temptations to meet, but the whole universe of heaven is standing on guard that no soul shall be tempted above that he able to bear. If men will look unto Jesus, as the One in whom they can trust, Christ will never fail them in any emergency.

I retired to rest about eleven p.m., but my mind had brought with me the burden for the souls of the church members in Ashfield. Oh, how my heart ached! I felt at times in an agony of spirit. I could not obtain sleep until two o’clock a.m. The privileges that are now ours seem so large and abundant, but truth must be brought into the practical life and each be doers of the Word else it will not sanctify and save the soul. We must co-operate with all our faculties with the Lord Jesus Christ. He worked upon the minds of the youth who had refused to be God’s representatives, causing them to be jealous of Daniel and his companions. At Satan’s suggestion they laid plans to entrap those who were making such steady, rapid advancement in knowledge. There were those who tried to deceive and mislead Daniel and his companions, who tried by flattery to induce them to enter into wrong. “The end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.” [1 Peter 4:7.] This is the work of the human agent. Who will become discouraged in this work—in the life of self-denial and self-sacrifice? When trials press heavily and the opposition of satanic agencies are strong, we are to bear in mind that Christ, the only begotten Son of God, poured out His soul unto death to obtain for us the victories He has made it possible for us to obtain. Although [we are] tried [and] tempted—buffeted by Satan and by those human agents through whom Satan works to tempt, ensnare, and destroy by misrepresenting the truth or by open falsehood—yet angels of God are working to let the light shine upon our souls, that we shall be more than conquerors through the grace that shall come to us by the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Heavenly agencies are all ready to do their appointed work, and to man Christ says, “Let him take hold of my strength and make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.]

But apart from divine power, no genuine reform can be effected. The deadened moral sensibilities of men and women must be aroused. They must be led to understand the benefits gained by obeying the invitation, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] They must be led to see their need of a loving, sin-pardoning Saviour. He who is man’s Creator and Redeemer will be to all who trust in Him a Restorer. While Satan is the destroyer, Christ is the Restorer. The people must be educated to understand that it is a sin to destroy their physical, mental, and spiritual energies; and they must understand how to cooperate with God in their own restoration. Through faith in Christ they can overcome the habit of using health-destroying stimulants and narcotics.

I want to begin to do my talking at the beginning of the school year, because as I shall speak to you from time to time, I do not want you to feel that I have heard of your wrong course, and am hitting at you. I want to stand right by your side. I want to help every one of you. I present you before God in my prayers. I want you to take hold with me. How? “Let him take hold of my strength,” God says, “that he may make peace with me, and he shall made peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] Daniel not only made peace with God, in making peace with God, he made peace with one who knew not God.

Bear in mind that Jesus Christ is your hope. As the physical life is sustained by the food that is eaten, so the spiritual life must be sustained by the bread of life. Body and spirit must have the food that is necessary for the sustenance of each. We must breathe the atmosphere of heaven. We must earnestly desire the sincere milk of the Word, that we may grow thereby. The Christian prays and watches and works. Let no selfishness mingle with the service done for fallen humanity. The Lord calls for faithful workers. The fascinating witcheries of evil present themselves in disguise. Each worker must be wide awake to the power of Satan as he seeks to rescue men from deadly evils. He must be sure that he is a partaker of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Let all who work for those sunken in degradation keep mind and heart in the love of God. Let them stay their minds upon a divine presence, which is always beside them, ever looking on with pitying tenderness. Let them think of a Father’s heart ever grieved over sin, of a Father’s hand stretched out still, of a Father’s voice saying, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” “I will make a man more precious than gold, even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.” [Isaiah 27:5; 13:12.]

Fraud in any business transaction is a grievous sin in God’s sight; for the goods men are handling belong to Him and must be used to the glory of His name, if men would be pure and clean in His sight. The religion that carries in its hand the scant measure and the deceitful balance is an abomination in the sight of God. He who cherishes such a religion will be brought to confusion; for God is a jealous God. The end of all things is at hand. The Saviour will never disappoint the one who trusts in Him. Those who are renewed unto righteousness will always bear good fruit, the fruit of the Spirit—good words and works. But before the fruit can be good the tree must be made good. The fruit of righteousness is shown forth by pleasant words, true courtesy, unselfish actions. Thus the character is made fragrant. How anxious we should be not to disappoint the Saviour. For our sakes He became poor, that we through His poverty might be made rich. It is possible for us to be overcomers. Through the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony, we may obtain a glorious victory. But the enemy will try to cast His dark shadow between our souls and God. He presents every possible inducement to lead us to be false to our Maker. He tries to gain control of the appetite, so that men and women shall make a god of the stomach. He knows that if they do this, their senses will become beclouded by overeating. He offers them stimulants and narcotics, hoping to lead them in the use of these things to forget God. Let us remember that these are the devices of the enemy to lead us to forget the advantages we may gain by every day eating the bread of life. Physically we are built up from what we eat. And so it is with the mind. If we make the Bible our guide and counsellor, we shall be strengthened and built up. Our faith must cleave <through> the shadow <and grasp> the glory beyond. God says, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.]

Our Covenant Broken

1MR 115.3

Let us place ourselves in the line of cooperation with God, making it possible for Him to answer our prayers. He has issued His promissory notes, declaring, “A new heart also will I give you” (See Ezekiel 36:26). He says that He will be found of those who seek Him with the whole heart. When you lose your hold on Christ, the bank of heaven has not failed, but you have broken your covenant with God. He cannot cover your sin while you continue in sin, refusing to let Him take away your transgression, because you suppose that in disobeying the commands of God, you have placed yourself beyond help. The Lord says, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me” (Isaiah 27:5).—Manuscript 56, 1903, 1, 2. (“A Present Help,” May 22, 1903.)

Let the sweetness of Thy Holy Spirit come into the hearts of Thy ministers, that Thy melting, merciful love, may be manifest in their life. I received your letter and feel very thankful that you have again taken your position under the bloodstained banner of Prince Emmanuel. May the Lord instruct you at every step. You will be tempted, you will be tried, but walk softly before God. Put your entire trust in the Lord. Serve Him with heart and soul, and believe that He pardons your transgressions and forgives your sins. He says in His word. “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me” [Isaiah 27:5]. The Lord is soon to come in the clouds of heaven. Then the trials and tribulations of this life will be over.

Never are we to lose sight of this thought. I am afraid of the men who fail to treat one another with thoughtfulness and kindness, who use their powers to weaken and depress and discourage the Lord’s servants, who, it may be, are striving in the face of great difficulties to do their appointed work, and, by mastering the difficulties, to reach success. How dare their ministering brethren ruthlessly uproot their influence by harsh, unsanctified words. How dare they wound and bruise their souls, leaving them to perish unless the Lord, in His great mercy and love, reaches out His hand, saying, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me, and he shall make peace with Me.” [Isaiah 27:5.]

“We are laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Lay hold of His work with clean hands, a pure heart, and holy, consecrated endeavor. Press forward to gain the triumphs of the cross of Christ. Are you not striving for a crown of immortality, for a life that measures with the life of God? O put your whole heart into the work. Let nothing cause your zeal to flag. Amidst trials and perplexities, hear His voice saying to you, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] True humility never hinders the Lord’s servants from undertaking the most arduous and responsible service, if the Lord requires it of them.

Christianity means more than making good resolutions, more than a fitful, spasmodic experience. Our thoughts are to be brought into captivity to Christ. There must be a steady, persevering cultivation of Christlike thoughts. There must be earnest prayer. Weaken the hands of the enemy by wrestling with God in prayer. Pray in the name of Christ for what you need, and then answer your prayer by bringing your actions into harmony with it. Remember that unless you follow Christ in self-denial, your prayers will not reach the throne of God. Christ points you to the path of self-sacrifice, saying, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” [Matthew 16:24.] He has made abundant provision for the efficiency of those who will to do His requirements. As soon as He sees a child of His in contrite, persevering prayer, He comes to him with the words, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.]

The Lord calls for faithful stewards—stewards who realize that God expects them to preserve their individuality. All who are connected with our sanitariums should now take up their work manfully. They are not to be dependent upon men, or to submerge their identity in any institution. For the strength he receives, the human agent is wholly dependent upon God. How foolish it is for God’s servants to reach out and take hold of human power! Unless that which is imparted by man comes from the Source of all strength, it is of no value. Let there be in the Sanitarium much prayer for the healing of the sick. We must depend more decidedly upon the great Healer. It is the miracle-working power of God that will give efficiency to the gospel message. As believers, are we not sons and daughters of God? Is not Christ our Elder Brother? Then shall we not believe that He will reveal His power in restoring the sick to health? Tell Him your wishes and desires, and plead the promise, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me, and he shall make peace with Me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] Christ cannot too often be reminded of His pledged word.

A human body and a human mind were His. He was bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh. He was subjected to poverty from His first entrance into the world. He was subject to disappointment and trial in His own home, among His own brethren. He was not surrounded, as in the heavenly courts, with pure and lovely characters. He was compassed with difficulties. He came into our world to maintain a pure, sinless character, and to refute Satan’s lie that it was not possible for human beings to keep the law of God. Christ came to live the law in His human character in just that way in which all may live the law in human nature if they will do as Christ was doing. He had inspired holy men of old to write for the benefit of man: “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” Isaiah 27:5.

For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven of the wind, and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.” [James 1:5-7.] We must lay hold of the promises, saying, “I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me.” [Genesis 32:26.] And when you receive the blessing, you will carry it to others. The atmosphere of heaven will surround your soul because Christ will be with you. “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me,” He says, “and he shall make peace with Me” [Isaiah 27:5].

Let us place ourselves in the line of co-operation with God, making it possible for Him to answer our prayers. When you lose your hold on Christ, the bank of heaven has not failed, but you have broken your covenant with God. He cannot cover your sin while you continue in sin, refusing to let Him take away your transgression, because you suppose that in disobeying the commands of God, you have placed yourself beyond help. To those who are suffering with this disease I would say, Live out-of-doors all you can. Take exercise regularly. Keep busy. Keep your heart free from all jealousy and evil surmising. Be cheerful, and ask God to help you to improve as fast as possible.

God has a yearning desire to save the purchase of the blood of Christ from the sure result of a wrong course of action, which, if persisted in, will bring upon them the wrath of the rejected Lamb. Mercy, rich and free, is presented in the gift of Christ’s righteousness. Those who scorn this precious gift, who despise and reject the Saviour, who refuse the invitation, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me” (Isaiah 27:5), reject the offer of the attributes of a character which will constitute them sons and daughters of God. “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name:” (What name? Immanuel, the Son of God) “Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:12-14).—Manuscript 26, 1896.

I left the meeting before it closed, in company with Sister Peck, and rode to Stanmore. I retired to rest about eleven p.m., but my mind had brought with me the burden for the souls of the church members in Ashfield. Oh, how my heart ached! I felt at times in an agony of spirit. I could not obtain sleep until two o’clock a.m. The privileges that are now ours seem so large and abundant, but truth must be brought into the practical life, and each be doers of the Word else it will not sanctify and save the soul. We must cooperate with all our faculties with the Lord Jesus Christ. He says, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me” [Isaiah 27:5]. Man is utterly dependent upon God. Christ says, “Without Me ye can do nothing” [John 15:5]. We must cooperate with God if we do His Word.

His word is pledged: “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.” Isaiah 27:5. The promise given to Joshua is given to all: “If thou wilt keep My charge, ... I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.” Zechariah 3:7. Angels of God will walk on either side of them, even in this world, and they will stand at last among the angels that surround the throne of God.

Chapter 49—Surrender and Confession

1SM 329.2

With the confession of the repenting, believing sinner, Christ mingles His own righteousness, that the prayer of fallen man may go up as fragrant incense before the Father, and the grace of God be imparted to the believing soul. Jesus says to the trembling, repenting soul: “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me” (Isaiah 27:5). “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isaiah 1:18). Will you let Him reason with you? Will you commit to Him the keeping of your soul as unto a faithful Creator? Come then, and let us live in the light of His countenance, and pray, as did David, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7). By faith apply the blood of Christ to your heart, for that alone can make you whiter than snow. But you say, “This surrender of all my idols will break my heart.” This giving up of all for God is represented by your falling upon the Rock and being broken. Then give up all for Him; for unless you are broken, you are worthless.

Selected Messages Book 3

Was Christ Capable of Yielding to Temptation?

3SM 129.4

Christ Had a Human Body and a Human Mind—A human body and a human mind were His. He had inspired holy men of old to write for the benefit of man: “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me” (Isaiah 27:5).

He is honored when we trust in Him, bringing to Him all our perplexities. “Whatsoever ye shall ask in My name,” Christ says, “that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John 14:13. Chapter 27—“Who is My Neighbour?”

COL 388.1

It is fellowship with Christ, personal contact with a living Saviour, that enables the mind and heart and soul to triumph over the lower nature. Tell the wanderer of an almighty hand that will hold him up, of an infinite humanity in Christ that pities him. It is not enough for him to believe in law and force, things that have no pity, and never hear the cry for help. He needs to clasp a hand that is warm, to trust in a heart full of tenderness. Keep his mind stayed upon the thought of a divine presence ever beside him, ever looking upon him with pitying love. Bid him think of a Father’s heart that ever grieves over sin, of a Father’s hand stretched out still, of a Father’s voice saying, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me, and he shall make peace.” Isaiah 27:5.

Be simplehearted enough to believe these promises of God. When Satan comes to you, and tells you that because you are unhappy, perplexed, and troubled you are not a child of God, do not become discouraged for one moment, but gird up the loins of your mind. Let your heart repose in God. He has promised that if you come to Him, you shall find rest to your soul; and if you have done this, rest assured that He will fulfill His word in you....

The Desire of Ages

Chapter 26—At Capernaum

DA 258.6

Every man is free to choose what power he will have to rule over him. None have fallen so low, none are so vile, but that they can find deliverance in Christ. The demoniac, in place of prayer, could utter only the words of Satan; yet the heart’s unspoken appeal was heard. No cry from a soul in need, though it fail of utterance in words, will be unheeded. Those who will consent to enter into covenant relation with the God of heaven are not left to the power of Satan or to the infirmity of their own nature. They are invited by the Saviour, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.” Isaiah 27:5. The spirits of darkness will battle for the soul once under their dominion, but angels of God will contend for that soul with prevailing power. The Lord says, “Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? ... Thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.” Isaiah 49:24, 25.

Thus will it be with the righteous. As they review the events of their past lives, their hopes will almost sink. But as they realize that it is a case of life or death they will earnestly cry unto God, and appeal to Him in regard to their past sorrow for, and humble repentance of, their many sins, and then will refer to His promise, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.” Isaiah 27:5. Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing

“Strive to enter in at the strait gate.”—Luke 13:24.

MB 144.1

Jacob, in the great crisis of his life, turned aside to pray. He was filled with one overmastering purpose—to seek for transformation of character. But while he was pleading with God, an enemy, as he supposed, placed his hand upon him, and all night he wrestled for his life. But the purpose of his soul was not changed by peril of life itself. When his strength was nearly spent, the Angel put forth His divine power, and at His touch Jacob knew Him with whom he had been contending. Wounded and helpless, he fell upon the Saviour’s breast, pleading for a blessing. He would not be turned aside nor cease his intercession, and Christ granted the petition of this helpless, penitent soul, according to His promise, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.” Isaiah 27:5. Jacob pleaded with determined spirit, “I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me.” Genesis 32:26. This spirit of persistence was inspired by Him who wrestled with the patriarch. It was He who gave him the victory, and He changed his name from Jacob to Israel, saying, “As a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.” Genesis 32:28. That for which Jacob had vainly wrestled in his own strength was won through self-surrender and steadfast faith. “This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” 1 John 5:4.

Work and Baptism of Holy Spirit Needed

1SAT 192.1

What we want is Jesus. What we want is His love. What we want is the elevation and ennobling of character. What we want is to die to self right here—not wait until some future period. We want to make the consecration here. Oh, I am so thankful that it is not too late for us to be righteous. I am so thankful we have a Jesus. I am so thankful that He is able to cleanse us from all sin! I am so thankful that I can hope for His blessing. I am so thankful that I can hide in Him now, and that I can accept His light and give it forth to others. May the Lord breathe upon us His Holy Spirit, and may we grow up into Christ, our living Head. We want this salvation today. We don’t want to wait; we don’t want to dispel Christ by our unbelief. We want to take right hold of Him because He has told us to do it; and He says—now listen, I want you to hear every word of it—“Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me” [Isaiah 27:5]. “Come now, and let us reason together...; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” [Isaiah 1:18]. Will you come? Will you believe? Will you let Him reason with you? Will you commit the keeping of your soul unto Him as unto a faithful Creator?

I want to begin to do my talking at the beginning of the school year, because as I shall speak to you from time to time, I do not want you to feel that I have heard of your wrong course, and am hitting at you. I want to stand right by your side. I want to help every one of you. I present you before God in my prayers. I want you to take hold with me. How? “Let him take hold of my strength,” God says, “that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me” [Isaiah 27:5]. Daniel not only made peace with God, in making peace with God he made peace with one who knew not God.

To those who are tired of a life of sinfulness, but who know not where to turn to obtain relief, present the compassionate Saviour, full of love and tenderness, longing to receive those who come to Him with broken hearts and contrite spirits. Take them by the hand, lift them up, speak to them words of hope and courage. Help them to grasp the hand of Him who has said, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.” Isaiah 27:5.

I arose at half past three o’clock and devoted some time to seeking the Lord. I wish we all understood the experience of really seeking the Lord. Isaiah tells us when we call He will answer, “Here I am” (Isaiah 58:9). We want to come into personal relation to our strong Helper, for He has said, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” Isaiah 27:5. Then why not come, why not drink of the living fountain of life? Why not be refreshed by partaking of the blessed heavenly waters?

God will help us if we take hold of the help He has provided. “Let him take hold of My strength,” He says, “that he may make peace with Me, and he shall make peace with Me” [Isaiah 27:5]. This is a blessed promise. Many times, when I have been discouraged and almost in despair, I have come to the Lord with this promise, and said, “Let me take hold of Thy strength, that I may make peace with Thee; and I shall make peace with Thee.” And as I have laid hold of the strength of God, I have found a peace which passeth understanding.

Physically we are built up from what we eat. And so it is with the mind. If we make the Bible our guide and counselor, we shall be strengthened and built up. Merciful Redeemer, Thou knowest every one. Here are some who are weighted down with burdens that have rested heavily upon them. May they link up with Thee. May they put their arm in Thine arm, and cling to Thee, the mighty One, who hast said, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me, and he shall make peace with Me” [Isaiah 27:5]. These are Thy words. Show them how, Lord, show them how to humble their proud hearts. Show them what it means to break their will before God, and to take Thy will. Help them to cast their helpless souls upon the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour. Present before them eternal life.

The God whom we serve is long-suffering: “his compassions fail not.” Lamentations 3:22. Throughout the period of probationary time his Spirit is entreating men to accept the gift of life. “As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die?” Ezekiel 33:11. It is Satan’s special device to lead man into sin, and then leave him there, helpless and hopeless, fearing to seek for pardon. But God invites, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” Isaiah 27:5. In Christ every provision has been made, every encouragement offered.

All that have put on the robe of Christ’s righteousness will stand before Him as chosen and faithful and true. Satan has no power to pluck them out of the hand of Christ. His word is pledged: “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.” Isaiah 27:5. The promise given to Joshua is made to all: “If thou wilt keep My charge, ... I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.” Zechariah 3:7. By following a consistent course of action, you may be evangelists in the home, ministers of grace to your children.

God Must Have Your Consent, April 8

All of the human race are free to choose what power they will have to rule over them. They are invited by the Saviour, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.” (Isaiah 27:5.) The spirits of darkness will battle for the soul once under their dominion, but angels of God will contend for that soul with prevailing power. The Lord says, “Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered? . . . Thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.” (Isaiah 49:24, 25.)—The Desire of Ages, 258, 259.

Take Hold of God’s Strength, July 2

I cannot let you rest. Your eternal interest depends upon your choice. Will you choose life or death? I wish to alarm you. You must arouse, for you are on the brink of destruction. You are making decisions for the judgment. Step carefully. Lay hold of the merits of the blood of Christ. O, do not perish for the sake of a few short days of worldly pleasure. Enlist under the blood-stained banner of Prince Immanuel. Leave the black banner of sin and darkness. Cherish every tender conviction of the Spirit. Have you no respect for the recompense of reward? Have the joys of heaven and eternal life no charms for you? I beg of you to flee to Jesus. O “let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” Isaiah 27:5.

If you think you can lay down the oars, and still make your way up stream, you are mistaken. It is only by earnest effort, by using the oars with all your might, that you can stem the current. How many there are as weak as water, when they have a never-failing Source of strength. Heaven is ready to impart to us, that we may be mighty in God, and attain the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus. But who of you in the past year have been making progress in the way of holiness? What increase of spiritual power have you gained? Who have come off conquerors over the foe? Who have been enabled to gain one precious attainment after another, until envy, pride, malice, jealousy, and every evil stain, has been swept away, and only the graces of the spirit remain,—meekness, forbearance, gentleness, charity. God will help us if we take hold of the help He has provided. “Let him take hold of my strength,” He says, “that he may make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] This is a blessed promise. Many times, when I have been discouraged and almost in despair, I have come to the Lord with this promise, and said, Let me take hold of Thy strength, that I may make peace with Thee; and I shall make peace with Thee. We hope you may be prospered of God. If we have His care and His approval, we shall make a success wherever we are and in whatever we may engage. Without the blessing of God, any amount of prosperity will fail to be a success. Our first anxiety should be to secure God as our friend. “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” Isaiah 27:5.

There is much to hold you, my sister, in a position of inaction. The natural feelings of the carnal heart would withdraw us from spiritual duties. Friends and relatives who have no interest in the things which make for their peace will claim our time, and often the things of the kingdom of God are repulsive to them. The attractions of this life—relatives, friends, and children—all withdraw our affections from Him who has shown us greater love than [all of them] in that He died for us. Outward difficulties may loom up like a lion in the way, and the slothful, timid heart may shrink with fear. But while we know that we cannot enter the Christian course with vigor and courage unless we are sure of effectual aid, we need not be discouraged. We have express and positive assurance that God will be with us. “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yes, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10. “Let him take hold of my strength, saith God, and make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” Isaiah 27:5. “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5. Although you may feel weak in your own strength, in the strength of God you may be strong; you may take hold of the strength of the Conqueror and be more than conqueror through Christ.

Listen to the testimony: “The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.” Psalm 126:3. You are to give this testimony to the world. He will do great things for us if we will let Him. But if we allow our minds to take a low channel, the angels of God cannot impress our minds. We must labor constantly to have our minds upon heaven, then we can make melody in our hearts to the Lord, and through Jesus we can be more than conquerors because we have taken hold of His power. “And let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me, and he shall make peace.” [Isaiah 27:5.] How can we doubt His word for one moment?

It is for us to believe and for the Lord to fulfil His promise. “Let him take hold of my strength and make peace with me and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] Now if we had virtue and righteousness and strength to rely upon of our own, the promise and invitation would not be worded just as it is, but it shows us we must cast our entire care upon Jesus and hope and trust in Him and Him alone. He has the merits, the strength, the power, and the will to help us. “And he shall make peace with me.” The promise is positive and there is no excuse for our doubting. Only believe, only trust in the Lord fully, and we shall see the salvation of God. He will reveal Himself as a prayer-hearing and a prayer-answering God.

To every medical student who desires to be an honor to the cause of God during the closing scenes of this earth’s history, I would say: Behold Christ, the Sent of God, who, in this world and in human nature, lived a pure, noble, perfect life, setting an example that all may safely follow. The Lord is reaching out His hand to save. Respond to His invitation, “Let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.” Isaiah 27:5.... How much weary struggling there is to find the light. To many God seems afar off. The thought of His holiness, His purity, His exaltation, arouses within the minds of men a weary hopelessness of ever attaining to perfection. Why do not such ones accept the invitation contained in the words, “Let him take hold of my strength, and make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] Why do they not cast away their own righteousness and accept the righteousness of Christ? Then the cry of hopelessness and despair would no longer be heard. The beams of the Sun of Righteousness would shine into the darkened heart, and songs of praise would rise to heaven.

Christ says, “Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” [Mark 8:34.] We shall find that as we lift the cross, it lifts us. Fallen human beings can be converted and transformed only by following where Christ leads the way. Justice says, “Let him alone; he is joined to his idols.” [Hosea 4:17.] Christ says, “Let him come to Me, and live. I will pardon his transgressions. This is the mark and spirit of all united by vital connection with Jesus Christ. “Give ear, O, ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. In trouble however trying, let us heed the precious words of encouragement, “Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” [Isaiah 27:5.] This is the privilege of all God’s people. The promise is not for a favored few. Jesus lives, my brother. He will go with you over the broad waters. Your faith will be tried; but you must believe, believe, believe.
