We did not get to rest before midnight, and then I could not close the door of my mind. It would think, think. I have been instructed that at this meeting we must look to the Lord, and not to one another, saying, What shall this man do? Each must seek the Lord most earnestly to know what he himself must do in service for God. Says the apostle, “By grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmen, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. ... Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone; in whom all the building fitly framed together, groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord. No word of boasting is to be brought into the life of the Christian. It does not become those who name the name of Christ to boast of the harm they will do their fellow men if their plans are interfered with. God despises all such pomposity. If the one who has done the boasting and has placed himself in a threatening attitude could see on whose side he is standing, he would be ashamed of his weakness of character. From the life of a true Christian, all boasting, all bravado is excluded. Our salvation is the gift of God; it is not earned by our works, “lest any man boast.” [Ephesians 2:9.]Ephesians 2:10

My brother, you have a work to do in contrition of soul to repent of your uncourteous spirit. If ever you needed pardon of God you need it now. Why should you make so great a matter unworthy of notice? Please read Ephesians 4:1-6. The Lord Jesus calls for you to yoke up with Him and to co-operate with Him. (Ephesians 2:10): “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Those who manufacture trials for themselves the Lord will leave to have some keen, deep trials that will humble their poor souls in the very dust of humiliation. There is to be with you a cleansing of the soul temple. I thank God that it is not too late for wrongs to be righted. When you humble yourself before God and accept His mercy and His love and kindness, then will the Lord reveal Himself unto you.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Be of good courage, Sister Hall. Our warfare is almost over. We can both rest in the assurance that “we are His workmanship.” [Ephesians 2:10.] Do not for a minute suppose that the Lord will forget your unselfish labors. During our lives the conflict has been sharp and severe. We can recall how again and again we have been pressed down to the grinding wheel. But let us never forget that if we can but see the King in His beauty, we shall be forever and forever blessed. I feel as if I must cry out aloud, “Homeward bound.” We are nearing the time when Christ shall come in power and great glory. Be of good courage in the Lord.God’s Amazing Grace

And as we near the close of time, the demarcation between the children of light and the children of darkness will be more and more decided. They will be more and more at variance. This difference is expressed in the words of Christ, “born again,” “created anew in Christ,” “dead to the world and alive unto God.” [John 3:3; Ephesians 2:10; Colossians 2:20; Romans 6:11.] These are the walls of separation that divide the heavenly from the earthly and describe the difference between those who belong to the world and those who are chosen out of it, who are elect, precious in the sight of God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

The command has come, Go into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. To obey, we must go to the heathen, “the publicans and harlots,” and present to them the Saviour’s invitation, which is a compelling message to those sunk to the lowest depths of spiritual wickedness, without God and without hope in the world. “Wherefore remember that ye, being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands, that at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world.” [Ephesians 2:11, 12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Love for God and Man
SL 82.1
We are commanded to love one another as Christ has loved us. He has manifested His love by laying down His life to redeem us. The beloved disciple says that we should be willing to lay down our lives for the brethren. For “every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him” (verse 1). If we love Christ, we shall love those who resemble Him in life and character. And not only so, but we shall love those who have “no hope,” and are “without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12). It was to save sinners that Christ left His home in heaven and came to earth to suffer and to die. For this He toiled and agonized and prayed, until, heartbroken and deserted by those He came to save, He poured out His life on Calvary.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

An effort should be made to save every soul who by sin has lost the image of God. Those who have been redeemed from a life of sin know how to reach those who are as they once were—“having no hope, and without God in the world.” [Ephesians 2:12.] Elevated and ennobled by the power they have received from Jesus Christ, these workers become like Christ and work in harmony with Him. The Lord gives them success as they study to show themselves approved unto God, workmen that need not to be ashamed.Ephesians 2:12-20

Chapter 17—Heralds of the Gospel
AA 175.1
The hearts of Paul and his associate workers were drawn out in behalf of those who were “without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world.” Through the untiring ministrations of the apostles to the Gentiles, the “strangers and foreigners,” who “sometimes were far off,” learned that they had been “made nigh by the blood of Christ,” and that through faith in His atoning sacrifice they might become “fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God.” Ephesians 2:12, 13, 19.AA 175.3
To those who believe, Christ is a sure foundation. Upon this living stone, Jews and Gentiles alike may build. It is broad enough for all and strong enough to sustain the weight and burden of the whole world. This is a fact plainly recognized by Paul himself. In the closing days of his ministry, when addressing a group of Gentile believers who had remained steadfast in their love of the gospel truth, the apostle wrote, “Ye ... are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.” Ephesians 2:19, 20.From Trials to Triumph

Later, in important centers, Paul and his companions preached the gospel to both Jews and Gentiles. But their chief energies were henceforth directed toward heathen peoples who had little or no knowledge of the true God and of His Son. Through the untiring ministrations of the apostles to the Gentiles, those “separated from Christ” who “once were far off” learned that they had been “brought near in the blood of Christ,” and through faith they might become “members of the household of God.” Ephesians 2:12, 13, 19, RSV.TT 93.3

Ordination
GW 441.2
The Christian church was at this time entering upon an important era. The work of proclaiming the gospel message among the Gentiles was now to be prosecuted with vigor; and as a result, the church was to be strengthened by a great ingathering of souls. The apostles who had been appointed to lead out in this work, would be exposed to suspicion, prejudice, and jealousy. Their teachings concerning the breaking down of “the middle wall of partition” [Ephesians 2:14.] that had so long separated the Jewish and the Gentile world, would naturally subject them to the charge of heresy; and their authority as ministers of the gospel would be questioned by many zealous, believing Jews.Pastoral Ministry

Chapter 2—The Training of the Twelve
AA 19.3
The Saviour longed to unfold to His disciples the truth regarding the breaking down of the “middle wall of partition” between Israel and the other nations—the truth that “the Gentiles should be fellow heirs” with the Jews and “partakers of His promise in Christ by the gospel.” Ephesians 2:14; 3:6. This truth was revealed in part at the time when He rewarded the faith of the centurion at Capernaum, and also when He preached the gospel to the inhabitants of Sychar. Still more plainly was it revealed on the occasion of His visit to Phoenicia, when He healed the daughter of the Canaanite woman. These experiences helped the disciples to understand that among those whom many regarded as unworthy of salvation, there were souls hungering for the light of truth. The Acts of the Apostles

Christ is the uniting link in the golden chain which binds believers together in God. There must be no separating in this great testing time. The people of God are, “fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord” (Verses 19-21). “And he gave to Moses when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai two tables of stone, written with the finger of God.” [Verse 18.] Never could this be blotted out; for it was written, engraved in stone, with the finger of God. It was never against us, because God declared that we were to obey His commandments as a perpetual covenant. At His death Christ blotted out the handwriting that was against us, “and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.” [Colossians 2:14.] In every ceremony, in every sacrifice, His death had been prefigured. He was the foundation of the sacrificial system, which was to last till in His death type should meet antitype. He “abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; and that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby. And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.” [Ephesians 2:15-20.]Ephesians 2:18

We have access to God through the merits of the name of Christ, and God invites us to bring to Him our trials and temptations; for He understands them all. He would not have us pour out our woes to human ears. Through the blood of Christ we may come to the throne of grace and find grace to help in time of need. We may come with assurance, saying, “My acceptance is in the Beloved.” “For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” “In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him” (Ephesians 2:18; Ephesians 3:12).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

“The great day of the Lord is near; it is near, and hasteth greatly.” Zephaniah 1:14. Jesus says: “Behold, I come quickly.” We should keep these words ever in mind, and act as though we do indeed believe that the coming of the Lord is nigh, and that we are pilgrims and strangers upon the earth. The vital energies of the church of God must be brought into active exercise for the great object of self-renovation; every member must be an active agent for God. “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief Cornerstone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” Ephesians 2:18-22. And Christ says, “Ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone: in whom the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” [Ephesians 2:19-22.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you.” [James 4:7, 8.] How precious to the tempted soul is this positive promise. Now if the one in trouble and temptation keeps his eye fixed on Jesus and draws nigh to God, talking of His goodness and mercy, Jesus draws nigh to him, and his annoyances that he thought almost unbearable vanish. For through Him we both have access by one spirit unto the Father. “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” [Ephesians 2:19-22.] This is vital energy for the church. This love for Christ must be revived; it has grown cold. Believers may not only pray for union with Christ and with one another, but have it. Troublous times are before us; but this is not to worry us. No advice of sanction is given in the Word of God to those who believe the third angel’s message to lead them to suppose that they can draw apart. This you may settle with yourselves forever. It is the devisings of unsanctified minds that would encourage a state of disunion. The sophistry of men may appear right in their own eyes, but it is not truth and righteousness.... The children of God constitute one united whole in Christ who presents His cross as the center of attraction. All who believe are one in Him. Human feelings will lead men to take the work into their own hands and the building thus becomes disproportionate. The Lord therefore employs a variety of gifts to make the building symmetrical. Not one feature of the truth is to be hidden or made of little account. God cannot be glorified unless the building, “fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord” (Ephesians 2:21). A great subject is here comprehended, and those who understand the truth for this time must take heed how they hear and how they build and educate others to practice.—Manuscript 109, 1899, 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10. We are transgressors of God’s law. Our only hope for salvation was in Christ taking upon Himself the guilt of our sins, bearing the penalty of transgression in His own body on the tree. He made a full oblation of sacrifice and, by that one oblation of Himself, made it possible for us to live in obedience to God’s commands and thus fulfil the condition of entering into eternal life. Our characters are to be conformed to His perfect character. By Him we are to be brought out of darkness into His marvelous light. By Him the image of God is to be renewed in the soul, sealing us in obedience to His law. We are to become His loyal subjects, having pure and undefiled religion and depending upon the one, grand principle, “By grace ye are saved, through faith.” [Ephesians 2:8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

Every soul who truly accepts Christ by faith will walk in humility of heart. There will be no exalting of self; but Christ will be exalted as the One on whom the hope of eternal life depends. “By grace are ye saved through faith,” the apostle Paul declared. [Ephesians 2:8.] And it is the grace of Christ in us that makes us His witnesses. We can be overcomers only by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony. By a well-ordered life and a godly conversation, we become lights in the church and in the world. Spiritual things must be spiritually discerned. Those who drink most deeply of the waters of salvation will reveal most fully the meekness and lowliness of Christ.Jesus, Name Above All Names

That simple faith which takes God at His word should be encouraged. God’s people must have that faith which will lay hold of divine power; “for by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Those who believe that God for Christ’s sake has forgiven their sins, should not, through temptation, fail to press on to fight the good fight of faith. Their faith should grow stronger until their Christian life, as well as their words, shall declare, “The blood of Jesus Christ ... cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).Jesus, Name Above All Names

A Personal Faith in Christ Our Greatest Need
GW92 103.2
The thought that the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us, not because of any merit on our part, but as a free gift from God, is a precious thought. The enemy of God and man is not willing that this truth should be clearly presented; for he knows that if the people receive it fully, his power will be broken. If he can control minds so that doubt and unbelief and darkness shall compose the experience of those who claim to be the children of God, he can overcome them with temptation. That simple faith that takes God at his word should be encouraged. It is one thing to read and teach the Bible, and another thing to have by practice its life-giving, sanctifying principles engrafted on the soul.... “By grace are ye saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:8). The mind should be educated to exercise faith rather than to cherish doubt, suspicion, and jealousy. We are too prone to regard obstacles as impossibilities. To have faith in the promises of God, to go forward by faith, pressing on without being governed by circumstances, is a lesson hard to learn. Yet it is a positive necessity that every child of God should learn this lesson. The grace of God through Christ is ever to be cherished, for it is given us as the only way of approaching God....Lift Him Up
