Have you ever wondered how Peter chose the eight Christian characteristics listed in 2 Peter 1:5-7? It’s interesting to note the apostle Paul’s influence (see Galatians 5:22, 23) in Peter’s list: steadfastness, self-control, knowledge. Notice 2 Peter 3:14-16. There is a lesson here for us. Peter, who had once been openly critical of Paul, was now his friend and admirer.2 Peter 3:14-18

The apostle Peter says that there are in Scripture “things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest ... unto their own destruction.” 2 Peter 3:16. The difficulties of Scripture have been urged by skeptics as an argument against the Bible; but so far from this, they constitute a strong evidence of its divine inspiration. If it contained no account of God but that which we could easily comprehend; if His greatness and majesty could be grasped by finite minds, then the Bible would not bear the unmistakable credentials of divine authority. The very grandeur and mystery of the themes presented should inspire faith in it as the word of God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

God gives us sufficient evidence of the truth to enable us to accept it understandingly; but He does not propose to remove all occasion for doubt and unbelief. Should He do this, there would no longer be a necessity for the exercise of faith. We would be able to walk by sight. All who with a teachable spirit study the Word of God may learn therefrom the way of salvation; yet they may not be able to understand every portion of the Sacred Record. The apostle Peter declares that in the epistles of Paul, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, there are “some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.” 2 Peter 3:16. Whatever is clearly established by the Word of God we should accept, without attempting to meet every doubt which Satan may suggest, or with our finite understanding to fathom the counsels of the Infinite One, or to criticize the manifestation of His grace or the exercise of His power.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

It is true that the apostle has said that there are some things that are hard to be understood in the Scriptures. [2 Peter 3:16.] So there are. And if it were not that there are subjects that are difficult and hard to be understood, well might the skeptic who now pleads that God has given a revelation that cannot be understood, well might he, I say, have something else to plead.2 Peter 3:16-18

The greatest care should be exercised by believers to place themselves in close connection with God and with those who have been taught of God. It is painful to see those who have believed present truth walking into Satan’s net. There are so many professors of the truth who have not Christ in the heart; therefore their religious experience is valueless. The Christian course is a battle and a march. The struggle must be lifelong and must be prosecuted with all that restless energy which the immense interest involved demands. For we are partakers of Christ and of all the benefits He has to bestow, “if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end,” maintaining to the last our Christian integrity and purity. [Hebrews 3:14.] “Ye therefore beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.” 2 Peter 3:17. God Looks upon the Character
2TT 209.1
We should show our faith by our works. A greater anxiety should be manifested to have a large measure of the spirit of Christ; for in this will be the strength of the church. It is Satan who is striving to have God’s children draw apart. Love, oh, how little love we have—love for God and for one another! The word and spirit of truth, dwelling in our hearts, will separate us from the world. The immutable principles of truth and love will bind heart to heart, and the strength of the union will be according to the measure of grace and truth enjoyed. Well would it be for us each to hold up the mirror, God’s royal law, and see in it the reflection of His own character. Let us be careful not to neglect the danger signals and the warnings given in His word. Unless heed is given to these warnings, and defects of character are overcome, these defects will overcome those who possess them, and they will fall into error, apostasy, and open sin. The mind that is not elevated to the highest standard will in time lose its power to retain that which it had once gained. “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” 1 Corinthians 10:12. “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. Let those whose names are upon the church book closely criticize their spiritual standing before God; and let those who are confident and self-sufficient take heed to these words, “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” [1 Corinthians 10:12.] Peter addresses the brethren in the faith, “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 3:17, 18. Pressed together, united, you will be strong to resist the enemy; divided, you will become weak and fall. Let every one of you make it the business of your life to answer the prayer of Christ in your life, to be one as He was one with the Father. Oh, what unity is this! And, says Christ, “By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:35. The precious plant of love will not grow of itself in the natural heart; it must be planted there by the Spirit of God and be carefully cultivated.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

We should show our faith by our works. The greater anxiety should be that the church members may have a large measure of the Spirit of Christ. Having the mind and spirit of Christ will be the strength of the church. Ever work for unity. It is Satan who is working to have God’s children drawing apart. Love, oh, how little love we have. Love for God and love for one another. We are separated from the world by the Word and spirit of truth dwelling in our hearts. The immutable principles of truth and love bind heart to heart, and the strength of the union is according to the measure of grace and truth enjoyed. Well would it be for us to hold up the mirror, God’s royal law, and see in it the reflection of our individual characters. Let us be careful not to neglect the danger signals and the warnings given in His Word. Unless heed is given to these warnings, unless defects of character are vigorously overcome, these defects will overcome the one who possesses them, and it will be plainly seen by God’s faithful ones who these are, for they will lapse into error, apostasy, and open sin. The mind that is not elevated to the highest standard will in time lose its power to retain that which it had once gained. “When thou thinkest thou standest, take heed lest thou fall.” [1 Corinthians 10:12.] “Ye therefore beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away by the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. The Great Controversy (1888 ed.)
Author’s Preface
GC88 f.4
The great controversy between good and evil will increase in intensity to the very close of time. In all ages the wrath of Satan has been manifested against the church of Christ; and God has bestowed his grace and Spirit upon his people to strengthen them to stand against the power of the evil one. When the apostles of Christ were to bear his gospel to the world and to record it for all future ages, they were especially endowed with the enlightenment of the Spirit. But as the church approaches her final deliverance, Satan is to work with greater power. He comes down “having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” Revelation 12:12. He will work “with all power and signs and lying wonders.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9. For six thousand years that master-mind that once was highest among the angels of God, has been wholly bent to the work of deception and ruin. And all the depths of Satanic skill and subtlety acquired, all the cruelty developed, during these struggles of the ages, will be brought to bear against God’s people in the final conflict. And in this time of peril the followers of Christ are to bear to the world the warning of the Lord’s second advent; and a people are to be prepared to stand before him at his coming, “without spot, and blameless.” 2 Peter 3:14. At this time the special endowment of divine grace and power is not less needful to the church than in apostolic days.To Be Like Jesus
