We profess to be pilgrims and strangers on earth, journeying to a better country, even an heavenly. If we are indeed but sojourners here, traveling to a land where none but the holy can dwell, we shall make it our first business to become acquainted with that country; we shall make diligent inquiry as to the preparation needed, the manners and character which we must have in order to become citizens there. Jesus, the King of that land, is pure and holy. He has commanded His followers, “Be ye holy; for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). If we are hereafter to associate with Christ and sinless angels we must here obtain a fitness for such society.

God has commanded us, “Be ye holy; for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16); and an inspired apostle declares that without holiness “no man shall see the Lord.” Hebrews 12:14. Holiness is agreement with God. By sin the image of God in man has been marred and well-nigh obliterated; it is the work of the gospel to restore that which has been lost; and we are to co-operate with the divine agency in this work. And how can we come into harmony with God, how shall we receive His likeness, unless we obtain a knowledge of Him? It is this knowledge that Christ came into the world to reveal unto us.

But, O, how abhorrent to God is he who dares to occupy a position of trust, and yet cherishes an impure, immortal character. One may sow seeds of immorality that will corrupt the souls of many, and through the influence of those corrupted, many others will be led to sin and destruction. Kindness and courteousness should be manifested; but the common, cheap talk, which is so customary even among some who claim to be Christians, should not be heard in our institutions. To be a Christian is to be Christlike—pure and holy in all manner of conversation. The only way for us to become truly courteous, without affection, without undue familiarity, is to drink in of the Spirit of Christ, to heed the injunction, “Be ye holy; for I am holy.” [1 Peter 1:16.] If we act upon the principles plainly laid down in the Word of God, we shall have no inclination to indulge in undue familiarity.

The eyes of the God of Israel are too pure to behold iniquity. These utterances of God, through his prophets, need to be considered by all who claim to be His people. God requires of every man and woman and youth that they shall perfect a Christian character. “Be ye holy for I am holy.” [1 Peter 1:16.] The low standard of Christianity is robbing the church of vitality, and of his power. The standard of piety and Bible religion has been trailing in the dust, because those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ follow their own ways, and reach a standard that God has not given them; but are raised up of themselves. Then they are false lights, false signboards pointing in the wrong direction. They call evil good, and darkness they call light, and professing to be righteous, they are, in their loose practices, after the order of the sinful man who has not the love of God and the fear of God before his eyes.

God requires that every man, woman and youth should perfect a Christian character. The command is, “Be ye holy, for I am holy.” [1 Peter 1:16.] Conformity to a low standard of Christianity is robbing the church of its vitality and power. The banner of piety, of Bible religion, has been trailing in the dust, because those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ follow their own ways, and conform to a standard that God has not given them, but one they have erected for themselves. But those who make a profession of Christianity and yet fail to have true piety are false lights, false sign boards pointing in a wrong direction. They call evil good and good evil, darkness light and light darkness. While claiming to be righteous, they indulge in loose practices after the order of the ungodly man who has not the love or fear of God before his eyes. They fail to bring the principles of the truth they profess to believe into their life-practices, and regard their sins and errors as trifling things.

I think much of you and feel a deep solicitude that you shall become mouthpieces for God. “Be ye holy for I am holy.” [1 Peter 1:16.] Oh, what a privilege it is to walk with God, to sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus! Oh, let the riches of His grace be revealed in all your words to the people! Walk humbly with God. Purify your souls by living the truth daily, and by and by, when the warfare is over, the crown of life is your reward.

“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” [Matthew 12:34.] If Christ abides in us, our conversation will be in heaven. We are exhorted to be holy. “Be ye holy for I am holy.” [1 Peter 1:16.] That is the reason, because He is holy. If [we] know Him, if He abides with us, we will be like Him, but if not you say in attitude and in word, I know Him not. He will take the simplest and the weakest and build them up in the most holy faith if they keep the channel of communications open between God and their souls.

It is not because the virtues of truth are in you that you magnify the mistakes of others and exalt yourself. Consider what your record will be in that day when the books are opened and every man is judged according to the things written in the books. “The Father,” declares Peter, “judgeth according to every man’s work.” [1 Peter 1:17.] Hour by hour, day by day He sums up the result of our words, our deportment, our influence, measuring our welldoing or our evildoing.

God expects his workers to be tender-hearted. How merciful are the ways of God! (See Deuteronomy 10:17-20; 2 Chronicles 20:5-7, 9; 1 Peter 1:17.) But the rules God has given have been disregarded, and strange fire has been offered before the Lord. The spirit of domination is extending to the presidents of our conferences. But if a man is sanguine of his own powers, and seeks to exercise dominion over his brethren, feeling that he is invested with authority to make his will the ruling power, the best and only safe course is to remove him, lest great harm be done, and he lose his own soul, and imperil the souls of others. “All ye are brethren.” Those in authority should manifest the spirit of Christ. They should deal as he would deal with every case that requires attention. They should go weighted with the Holy Spirit.

The offerings presented to the Lord were to be without blemish. These offerings represented Christ, and from this it is evident that Jesus Himself was free from physical deformity. He was the “lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:19). His physical structure was not marred by any defect; His body was strong and healthy. And throughout His lifetime He lived in conformity to nature’s laws. Physically as well as spiritually, He was an example of what God designed all humanity to be through obedience to His laws.

Chapter 15—The Value of Bible Study

CE 119.2

Those who are teaching the most solemn message ever given to the world, should discipline the mind to comprehend its significance. The theme of redemption will bear the most concentrated study, and its depth will never be fully explored. You need not fear that you will exhaust this wonderful theme. Drink deep of the well of salvation. Go to the fountain for yourself, that you may be filled with refreshment, that Jesus may be in you a well of water, springing up unto everlasting life. Only Bible truth and Bible religion will stand the test of the judgment. We are not to pervert the word of God to suit our convenience, and worldly interests, but to honestly inquire, “What wilt thou have me to do?” “Ye are not your own, for ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] And what a price! Not “with corruptible things, as silver and gold, ... but with the precious blood of Christ.” [1 Peter 1:18, 19.] When man was lost, the Son of God said, I will redeem him, I will become his surety and substitute. He laid aside his royal robes, clothed his divinity with humanity, stepped down from the royal throne, that he might reach the very depth of human woe and temptation, lift up our fallen natures, and make it possible for us to be overcomers,—the sons of God, the heirs of the eternal kingdom. Shall we then allow any consideration of earth to turn us away from the path of truth? Shall we not challenge every doctrine and theory, and put it to the test of God’s word?

Chapter 48—The Divine Standard

1SM 321.4

Jesus is our atoning sacrifice. We can make no atonement for ourselves; but by faith we can accept the atonement that has been made. “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18). “Ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, ... but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18, 19). It was through infinite sacrifice and inexpressible suffering that our Redeemer placed redemption within our reach. He was in this world unhonored and unknown, that, through His wonderful condescension and humiliation, He might exalt man to receive eternal honors and immortal joys in the heavenly courts. During His thirty years of life on earth His heart was wrung with inconceivable anguish. The path from the manger to Calvary was shadowed by grief and sorrow. He was a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, enduring such heartache as no human language can portray. He could have said in truth, “Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow” (Lamentations 1:12). Hating sin with a perfect hatred, He yet gathered to His soul the sins of the whole world. Guiltless, He bore the punishment of the guilty. Innocent, yet offering Himself as a substitute for the transgressor. The guilt of every sin pressed its weight upon the divine soul of the world’s Redeemer. The evil thoughts, the evil words, the evil deeds of every son and daughter of Adam, called for retribution upon Himself; for He had become man’s substitute. Though the guilt of sin was not His, His spirit was torn and bruised by the transgressions of men, and He who knew no sin became sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

He only is able to take care of it. We are not our own selves able to appreciate or take care of our souls. PP 352.3

Every morning and evening a lamb of a year old was burned upon the altar, with its appropriate meat offering, thus symbolizing the daily consecration of the nation to Jehovah, and their constant dependence upon the atoning blood of Christ. God expressly directed that every offering presented for the service of the sanctuary should be “without blemish.” Exodus 12:5. The priests were to examine all animals brought as a sacrifice, and were to reject every one in which a defect was discovered. Only an offering “without blemish” could be a symbol of His perfect purity who was to offer Himself as “a lamb without blemish and without spot.” 1 Peter 1:19. The apostle Paul points to these sacrifices as an illustration of what the followers of Christ are to become. He says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1. We are to give ourselves to the service of God, and we should seek to make the offering as nearly perfect as possible. God will not be pleased with anything less than the best we can offer. Those who love Him with all the heart, will desire to give Him the best service of the life, and they will be constantly seeking to bring every power of their being into harmony with the laws that will promote their ability to do His will.

The offerings presented to the Lord were to be without blemish. These offerings represented Christ, and from this it is evident that Jesus Himself was free from physical deformity. He was the “lamb without blemish and without spot.” 1 Peter 1:19. His physical structure was not marred by any defect; His body was strong and healthy. And throughout His lifetime He lived in conformity to nature’s laws. Physically as well as spiritually, He was an example of what God designed all humanity to be through obedience to His laws.

Elder Smith’s action in publishing Elder Jones’ article, and then his own directly opposite, is presenting to our opponents broken ranks instead of a united front, and turning the weapons of warfare against our brethren. What kind of policy is this for Seventh-day Adventists? What does the True Witness say of such workers? Is it not time that a different order of things should come in? Is it of no account whether men heed the words of Christ or work away from them, showing that they have more confidence in their own judgment than in the words of our Lord and Saviour? Think you that this would be so if the children of God loved one another as Christ has loved them? “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” [John 13:34, 35.] See Romans 12:9. “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned.” [1 Timothy 1:5.] “See that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.” [1 Peter 1:22.]

Our character is to be modeled after the divine similitude, and to be reformed by that “faith that works by love and purifies the soul.” [See Galatians 5:6; 1 Peter 1:22.] The grace of God will beautify, ennoble, and sanctify the character. The servant of the Lord who works intelligently may be successful. Our Saviour said, “Greater things than these shall ye do, because I go to my Father.” [John 14:12.] What are these “greater things”? If our lips are touched with the living coal from off the altar, we shall reveal to the world the wonderful love manifested by God in giving Jesus, His only begotten Son, to the world, “that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]

The work we have to do is not to get up astonishing disclosures, but [to present the truth] in simplicity, as children tell the story of their simple experiences. No one need try to measure the infinite and describe the inconceivable and heavenly things. We want and must have sweet, humble meekness, trust and faith, because we love Jesus and we cherish love for all His believing ones. The Lord would have us rest in His Word, receive His Word, and do His Word as obedient children. Then let thanksgiving come from our lips in the place of murmuring. Let love be a precious, cultivated plant. “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.” 1 Peter 1:22. The truth sanctifies the receiver and the soul that has the peace, the faith, and love of Christ will surely work to bless and try to save his fellow men, and will not live to please himself. We are none of us warring to obtain the mastery, but to maintain principle, firm, unyielding, ever-ennobling Bible principle. All men have not faith, and because of this, unbelief will often bar the way. May the Lord give clear eyesight to His servants. May He grant that men’s ideas and opinions shall not be allowed to prevail as the voice of God. Let us walk in faith and hope and charity, in willing obedience to the truth. “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.” [1 Peter 1:22.] Growth in grace is an imperceptible process, but the results testify to the power of God. Bear in mind that things of eternal interest are not discerned by all men, but are by much the larger class “disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious.” [Verse 4.] These words should bring joy and comfort to everyone who loves God sincerely. “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.” [1 Peter 1:22.] This is not a sentimental love, for that quality of love is not to be depended on; it is the chaff, not the wheat.

Peter represents Christians as those who have purified their souls “in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren.” And he adds the exhortation, “See that ye love another with pure hearts fervently, being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.” “For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: but the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” [1 Peter 1:22-25.] Our faith and hope are founded, not in feeling, but in God. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” [John 1:1.]

A Call To Stand Apart

Chapter 6—The Answer Lies in the Soil

CSA 19.8

“The sower soweth the word.” Christ came to sow the world with truth. Ever since the fall of man, Satan has been sowing the seeds of error. It was by a lie that he first gained control over men, and thus he still works to overthrow God’s kingdom in the earth and to bring men under his power. A sower from a higher world, Christ came to sow the seeds of truth. He who had stood in the councils of God, who had dwelt in the innermost sanctuary of the Eternal, could bring to men the pure principles of truth. Ever since the fall of man, Christ had been the Revealer of truth to the world. By Him the incorruptible seed, “the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever,” is communicated to men. 1 Peter 1:23. In that first promise spoken to our fallen race in Eden, Christ was sowing the gospel seed. But it is to His personal ministry among men and to the work which He thus established that the parable of the sower especially applies.

My brother, I have a word from the Lord for you. You have many things to unlearn before you can learn the lessons in the school of Christ, before you can be an accepted son of God. You are to use every means within your reach that will help you to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord. Heaven is a happy place because it is a holy place. Conformity to the likeness of Christ’s character, overcoming all sin and temptation, walking in the fear of God, setting the Lord continually before us, will bring peace and joy on earth and insure us pure happiness in heaven. “Sanctify them through thy truth.” [John 17:17.] “Born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible.” [1 Peter 1:23.] The seed here referred to is the truth planted in the heart—the Word of God that abideth forever. We cannot be sanctified by a mixture of truth and error. We are chosen of God through the sanctification of the Spirit.

Chapter 38—Light Through Darkness

PK 464.1

The dark years of destruction and death marking the end of the kingdom of Judah would have brought despair to the stoutest heart had it not been for the encouragements in the prophetic utterances of God’s messengers. Through Jeremiah in Jerusalem, through Daniel in the court of Babylon, through Ezekiel on the banks of the Chebar, the Lord in mercy made clear His eternal purpose and gave assurance of His willingness to fulfill to His chosen people the promises recorded in the writings of Moses. That which He had said He would do for those who should prove true to Him, He would surely bring to pass. “The word of God ... liveth and abideth forever.” 1 Peter 1:23.

How often this result has been seen in the history of God’s messengers! When the noble and eloquent Stephen was stoned to death at the instigation of the Sanhedrin council, there was no loss to the cause of the gospel. The light of heaven that glorified his face, the divine compassion breathed in his dying prayer, were as a sharp arrow of conviction to the bigoted Sanhedrist who stood by, and Saul, the persecuting Pharisee, became a chosen vessel to bear the name of Christ before Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. And long afterward Paul the aged wrote from his prison house at Rome: “Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife: ... not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds.... Notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretense, or in truth, Christ is preached.” Philippians 1:15-18. Through Paul’s imprisonment the gospel was spread abroad, and souls were won for Christ in the very palace of the Caesars. By the efforts of Satan to destroy it, the “incorruptible” seed of the word of God, “which liveth and abideth forever” (1 Peter 1:23), is sown in the hearts of men; through the reproach and persecution of His children the name of Christ is magnified and souls are saved.

Be not deceived! God will not be mocked. Mistake not the present omens as a final decision. The decision will be pronounced by Him who never makes a mistake. He weighs actions, and actions testify to character. The wrongdoings of men have their season and time, and unless they repent, He who weighs with other scales than those held in the hands of infatuated, blinded, worldly-wise men, who view transactions from a worldly standpoint, will reward them according to their deeds. Their glory, their usurped authority, their putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity, will bring its sure results. All these things have their limit, their season. All come to an end. “All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: but the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” [1 Peter 1:24, 25.]

Like the builders of these houses on the rock, said Jesus, is he who shall receive the words that I have spoken to you, and make them the foundation of his character and life. Centuries before, the prophet Isaiah had written, “The word of our God shall stand for ever” (Isaiah 40:8); and Peter, long after the Sermon on the Mount was given, quoting these words of Isaiah, added, “This is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you (1 Peter 1:25).
