“Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] You are to live for Him who gave His life for you. Your love for that which is human is to be secondary to your love for God. The wealth of your souls’ affection is to flow forth to Him whose you are by creation and by redemption. Living in God, the soul sends forth its best and highest affections to Him who made it, giving Him firm and willing service. Is your greatest outflow of love toward Him who has purchased you with His own life? If it is, your love for each other will be after the divine order.

My brother, my sister, you who have had experience, will you not do all in your power to train those who accept the truth under your labors, who are just beginning to understand their relation to God and His relation to them? God is seeking to draw us to Him, that we may draw others to Him. He desires us to cherish correct ideas, to raise our estimate of life and of the sacredness of our responsibilities. “Ye are not your own; for ye have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]

The servants and the talents belong to God. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are his.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Your capabilities and powers are a purchased possession. You are to train the mind to think right thoughts, the tongue to speak right words, the eye to see right things. The heart is to be cleansed and purified, that it may be an abiding place for Christ.

“Ye are not your own.” The Lord Jesus has a right to your wholehearted and faithful, persevering energies. “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20].

To secure your present and future good, Christ gave Himself as a sacrifice. Will you draw back from making a covenant with God by sacrifice? Christ died on the cross to save the world from perishing in sin. He asks your co-operation in his work of soul-saving. You are to be His helping hand, to do the work that needs to be done, to place the truth before as many as possible. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]

Day by day we are building characters, and we are building for eternity. God desires us in our lives to give the people of the world an example of what they should be and can be through obedience to the gospel of Christ. Let us place ourselves in God’s hands, to be dealt with as He sees best. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] If we build in co-operation with Him, the structure that we rear will day by day grow more beautiful and more symmetrical under the hand of the Master-builder, and through all eternity it will endure.

Adam fell. Christ has fulfilled His pledge to redeem the lost race. By His sacrifice we are laid under everlasting obligation to God. We are to serve Him with our whole hearts. “Ye are not your own. ... Ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] To this end we will put to tax every power God has given us, and strengthen our capabilities to the utmost. The talents God has entrusted to us should be increased by cultivation and use. By faithfully using all our powers to God’s glory, we shall be able to fulfil His purpose concerning us.

Christ came to this world in the likeness of men. This He did that He might meet human beings where they were. For us He lived a life of sinlessness, and for us He died a death of shame on the cross, redeeming us from the power of Satan. We are His by creation and by redemption. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are His.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] With sincere purpose and full faith receive Christ as your personal Saviour. “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” [John 1:12.]

Those who would at last be received into heaven as members of the royal family must here give themselves—body, soul, and spirit—to the service of Him who paid the price of their redemption. All that we have and are belongs to the Lord. “Ye are not your own,” the apostle declares; “for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]

I have repeatedly been instructed that no one should be advised to pledge himself to spend two, three, four, five, or six years under any man’s tuition, not even Dr. Kellogg’s. Brethren, we have no time for this. Time is short. We are to hold out urgent inducements to the men who ought now to be engaged in missionary work for the Master. The highways and byways are yet unworked. The Lord calls for young men to labor as canvassers and evangelists, to do house-to-house work in places that have not yet heard the truth. God speaks to our young men, saying, “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]

Oh, how verily blind are the souls who are pompous and demerit the good and the true and the righteous! They cannot appreciate true virtue. God wants the souls He has purchased with His own blood to be in every respect valuable according to the purchase money paid. “Ye are not your own.” “Ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Every provision has been made. “I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir;” that is, every man who will submit to become, through the grace of God, refined, ennobled, sanctified. [Isaiah 13:12.] If he chooses his own defective, objectionable traits of character, the devil will surely be accepted and honored as his god. His schemes, his intricacies, his resentment—if all his propositions are not entered into as the superior wisdom, and if opposed—the wicked one will be sure to reveal himself as one who has knowledge and has power, but not the wisdom to use his smartness, abusing it and making him disgusting to the Lord Jesus.

A Solemn Appeal

Chapter 5—Sentimentalism

SA 175.1

It is not pure, holy love which leads the wife to gratify the animal propensities of her husband at the expense of health and life. If she possesses true love and wisdom, she will seek to divert the mind of her husband from the gratification of lustful passions, to high and spiritual themes, dwelling upon interesting spiritual subjects. It may be necessary to humbly and affectionately urge, even at the risk of his displeasure, that she cannot debase her body by yielding to sexual excess. She should, in a tender, kind manner, remind him that God has the first and highest claim upon her entire being, which claim she cannot disregard, for she will be held accountable in the great day of God. “What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. “Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.” 1 Corinthians 7:23.

We pass through this world but once. Let every step taken by those who claim to be sons and daughters of God be forward. Listen to the words of Christ: He that “will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” [Matthew 16:24]. This alone will designate each of us as His disciples. Are we witnessing before the angels of heaven and before the worlds unfallen that we as human beings recognize that we understand what this means, “Ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20].

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Tell them of the gospel medical missionary work to be established in Washington, and ask them to unite with you in denying self to help this worthy enterprise. The “together” means everything to us. Why? “Ye are not your own, you are bought with a price. That mind cost the price of the blood of the Son of God, and you want to keep all your capabilities and all your powers, every one of you—you want to keep in the very best condition of health, that God can work through you, that God can use His property; that God can work with you to demonstrate to the world the life that is to come, and the consolation of His grace to you in this world.

A sense of duty to my Lord leads me to speak. The time for action has come. I have had much to say of the glory of God as seen in His created works, but never have I left the impression that our God Omnipotent, who ruleth in the heavens and fills all the heavens, is to be found in flower and leaf and tree. What I have said of God’s works in nature was meant to lead the mind from nature to nature’s God, to show that all the glory should be given to Him who ruleth in the heavens, controlling all things in heaven and in earth. Men are to discharge their duty to God. They are to have reverence for and a knowledge of a personal God. They are to praise and glorify His name as the One who has placed many beautiful things in this sin-corrupted earth, that from the child to the man and woman of mature years, all may see that God loves His family here below. He so loves us that He gave us a tangible proof of His love by sending His only begotten Son to bear the sin of the world, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God desires us to think of the height and depth and breadth of His measureless love, which is without a parallel, and to remember that we are his purchased possession. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are His.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] We are to act as in the sight of the heavenly universe, conscientiously discharging our obligations to our Creator.

The use of money is a wonderful talent. [Is it] to be put out in interest in various speculations in houses and lands? No; no. This is not the way of using the means. It is to be invested in various ways only to glorify God. “Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] In cooperation with Christ Jesus, the Lord’s own money is to be used to do the work He has given His life to accomplish, first as the Alpha and continuing until the Omega.

The judgments of God are in the land, and Christ is soon to come. Fire and flood and earthquake are warning us that the end of all things is at hand. Believers need to arise to their privileges and responsibilities. Our understanding needs to be quickened daily by the Holy Spirit. We need to stand humble and contrite before God. It is no time to lift up our souls in pride, or to manifest carelessness and indifference. We need to arouse and give to our youth the evidence that we believe this last message of warning. Let us lay our freewill offerings upon the altar of the Lord. In doing this we are only giving Him what is already His: for Christ has paid the price for our redemption. “Ye are not your own,” Christ declares; “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20). What was the price that He paid to redeem you from the slavery of sin? He gave up His high command in the heavenly courts, laid off His royal robe and kingly crown, and clothed His divinity with humanity, that He might pay for us the penalty of transgression. He came to this world to stand at the head of the human family. For our sake He became poor, that we might come into possession of the eternal riches. With His long human arm He encircled the race, while with His divine arm He grasped the throne of mercy in behalf of fallen human beings, that He might take away their sins and make them partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

By means of these lectures the patients may be shown the responsibility resting on them to keep the body in the most healthful condition because it is the Lord’s purchased possession. Christ has paid the price of the salvation of the whole world. He requires the members of His church to live up to the faith they profess. He urges them to subordinate the world to its true place, forbidding them to exhaust the powers of body, and mind, and soul, in an effort to secure worldly gain. All the capabilities of the being are to be subordinated to God, stamped with His image and superscription. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are His.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]

What does conversion mean? Can we comprehend it? He who is truly converted is imbued with the Spirit of Christ. He is ready to make any sacrifice for the service of the Master. He has been bought with a price, and he is to withhold no power of his being from this service. All that he has and is belongs to the Lord. “Ye are not your own; for ye have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are His.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Reason, knowledge, property, time—all belong to the Lord. He who refuses to give all to God is robbing his Creator and making himself a rebel. Every Christian is to regard himself as part of the cross. He is to throw his influence on the side of Christ, doing all in his power to carry forward the great plan instituted as the only hope for the salvation of human beings. His character is to be a reproduction of the character of the Redeemer.

All who can take this in will understand the value of the soul, which means the whole man. “Ye are not your own, for ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] This means that there is to be an individuality expressed by every soul ever to represent through his faith in all his work his gratitude and his repentance for sin. We are earnestly to cultivate a perception of the great and measureless sacrifice of One equal with God, in bearing all the sufferings satanic agencies can invent through human beings. We would have every soul awake to an appreciation of the great sacrifice which Christ has made. If those who believe in Him have a realization of His love, they will exercise strict control over their spirit, their words, their habits and practices. They will consecrate themselves to God, mind, heart, soul, and strength, growing up into full stature in Christ Jesus. All their powers will be consecrated to God the Father, as an expression of their appreciation of the wonderful sacrifice He has made to redeem an apostate world. His Son, equal with the Father, came to the world, clothing His divinity with humanity, to live a life of poverty and to suffer reproach and be misunderstood. He was beset with Satan’s temptations and reviled of men. He was tempted in all points, like as we are, yet without sin. With what pain He viewed the defects in His disciples. He loved them, and He loves His disciples today as He did those who were with Him when He was upon earth.

Let our church members now begin the work of humbling their hearts before God. Let no one exhibit an unchristlike independence. Let no one feel that he can be mind and conscience and experience for his fellow man. All are amenable to God. He speaks to every individual, saying, “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] I am with you always, to guide you, to comfort you, to strengthen you, to sustain you in your work, to make you successful in the presentation of the Word. I will impress the mind, I will convince of sin. If you will give your hearts to Me, I will let My light shine into the chambers of the mind, and My spirit shall abide in the soul temple.

In the working out of all your plans, seek the Lord for wisdom and grace. In all our medical institutions, patients should be systematically and carefully instructed how to prevent disease by a wise course of action. Through lectures, and the consistent practice of the principles of healthful living on the part of consecrated physicians and nurses, the blinded understanding of many will be opened, and truths never before thought of will be fastened on the mind. Many of the patients will be led to keep the body in the most healthy condition possible, because it is the Lord’s purchased possession. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]

There is a solemn responsibility resting upon all, and especially upon our ministers and their families, to set a right example in the matter of healthful living. If our ministers would combine physical labor with their mental efforts, they would find great improvement in health and mental clearness.

In doing this we are only giving Him what is already His; for Christ has paid the price for our redemption. “Ye are not your own,” Christ declares; “for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]

Chapter 15—The Value of Bible Study

CE 119.2

Those who are teaching the most solemn message ever given to the world, should discipline the mind to comprehend its significance. The theme of redemption will bear the most concentrated study, and its depth will never be fully explored. You need not fear that you will exhaust this wonderful theme. Drink deep of the well of salvation. Go to the fountain for yourself, that you may be filled with refreshment, that Jesus may be in you a well of water, springing up unto everlasting life. Only Bible truth and Bible religion will stand the test of the judgment. We are not to pervert the word of God to suit our convenience, and worldly interests, but to honestly inquire, “What wilt thou have me to do?” “Ye are not your own, for ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] And what a price! Not “with corruptible things, as silver and gold, ... but with the precious blood of Christ.” [1 Peter 1:18, 19.] When man was lost, the Son of God said, I will redeem him, I will become his surety and substitute. He laid aside his royal robes, clothed his divinity with humanity, stepped down from the royal throne, that he might reach the very depth of human woe and temptation, lift up our fallen natures, and make it possible for us to be overcomers,—the sons of God, the heirs of the eternal kingdom. Shall we then allow any consideration of earth to turn us away from the path of truth? Shall we not challenge every doctrine and theory, and put it to the test of God’s word?

Chapter 31—The Sin of Nadab and Abihu

PP 362.1

The same obligation rests upon every follower of Christ. The apostle Peter declares, “Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.” 1 Peter 2:9. We are required by God to preserve every power in the best possible condition, that we may render acceptable service to our Creator. When intoxicants are used, the same effects will follow as in the case of those priests of Israel. The conscience will lose its sensibility to sin, and a process of hardening to iniquity will most certainly take place, till the common and the sacred will lose all difference of significance. How can we then meet the standard of the divine requirements?” “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31. To the church of Christ in all ages is addressed the solemn and fearful warning, “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” 1 Corinthians 3:17.

And again: “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20; 10:31.

In your life union your affections are to be tributary to each other’s happiness. Each is to minister to the happiness of the other. This is the will of God concerning you. Chapter 55—Transformed by Grace

AA 566.1

The greatest praise that men can bring to God is to become consecrated channels through whom He can work. Time is rapidly passing into eternity. Let us not keep back from God that which is His own. Let us not refuse Him that which, though it cannot be given with merit, cannot be denied without ruin. He asks for a whole heart; give it to Him; it is His, both by creation and by redemption. He asks for your intellect; give it to Him; it is His. He asks for your money; give it to Him; it is His. “Ye are not your own, for ye are bought with a price.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. God requires the homage of a sanctified soul, which has prepared itself, by the exercise of the faith that works by love, to serve Him. He holds up before us the highest ideal, even perfection. He asks us to be absolutely and completely for Him in this world as He is for us in the presence of God.

“Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? for ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. He whose body is the temple of the Holy Spirit will not be enslaved by a pernicious habit. His powers belong to Christ, who has bought him with the price of blood. His property is the Lord’s. How could he be guiltless in squandering this entrusted capital? Professed Christians yearly expend an immense sum upon useless and pernicious indulgences, while souls are perishing for the word of life. God is robbed in tithes and offerings, while they consume upon the altar of destroying lust more than they give to relieve the poor or for the support of the gospel. If all who profess to be followers of Christ were truly sanctified, their means, instead of being spent for needless and even hurtful indulgences, would be turned into the Lord’s treasury, and Christians would set an example of temperance, self-denial, and self-sacrifice. Then they would be the light of the world.

Chapter 4—Relation of Diet to Health and Morals

CTBH 52.3

God requires the body to be rendered a living sacrifice to him, not a dead or a dying sacrifice. The offerings of the ancient Hebrews were to be without blemish, and will it be pleasing to God to accept a human offering that is filled with disease and corruption? He tells us that our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost; and he requires us to take care of this temple, that it may be a fit habitation for his Spirit. The apostle Paul gives us this admonition: “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] All should be very careful to preserve the body in the best condition of health, that they may render to God perfect service, and do their duty in the family and in society.

The Sanctified Life

Not an Impossible Standard

SL 26.1

When Paul wrote, “The very God of peace sanctify you wholly” (1 Thessalonians 5:23), he did not exhort his brethren to aim at a standard which it was impossible for them to reach; he did not pray that they might have blessings which it was not the will of God to give. He knew that all who would be fitted to meet Christ in peace must possess a pure and holy character. “Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (1 Corinthians 9:25-27). “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20).

“Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] He whose body is the temple of the Holy Spirit will not be enslaved by a pernicious habit. His powers belong to Christ, who has bought him with the price of blood. His property is the Lord’s. How could he be guiltless in squandering this intrusted capital? Professed Christians yearly expend an immense sum upon useless and pernicious indulgences, while souls are perishing for the word of life. God is robbed in tithes and offerings, while they offer upon the altar of destroying lust more than they give to relieve the poor or for the support of the gospel. If all who profess to be followers of Christ were truly sanctified, every channel of needless expense would be turned into the Lord’s treasury, and Christians would set an example of temperance, self-denial, and self-sacrifice. Then they would be the light of the world.

When we have given to God soul, body, and spirit; when we have kept appetite under the control of enlightened conscience, and wrestled against every lust, showing that we consider each organ as God’s property, intended for His service; when all our affections move in harmony with the Lord’s mind, fastening on objects “which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1)—then we have given the Lord His own. God requires all men to render their bodies to Him a living sacrifice, not a dead or a dying sacrifice, a sacrifice which their own course of action is debilitating, filling with impurities and disease. God calls for a living sacrifice. The body, He tells us, is the temple of the Holy Ghost, the habitation of His Spirit, and He requires all who bear His image to take care of their bodies for the purpose of His service and His glory. “Ye are not your own,” says the inspired apostle, “ye are bought with a price”; wherefore “glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20). In order to do this, add to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience.

“Know ye not that ... ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. What a price has been paid for us! Behold the cross, and the Victim uplifted upon it. Look at those hands, pierced with the cruel nails. Look at His feet, fastened with spikes to the tree. Christ bore our sins in His own body. That suffering, that agony, is the price of your redemption. The word of command was given: “Deliver them from going down to perish eternally. I have found a ransom.”

Responsibilities of Married Life

3TT 95.5

In your life union your affections are to be tributary to each other’s happiness. Each is to minister to the happiness of the other. This is the will of God concerning you. But while you are to blend as one, neither of you is to lose his or her individuality in the other. God is the owner of your individuality. Of Him you are to ask: What is right? What is wrong? How may I best fulfill the purpose of my creation? “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. Your love for that which is human is to be secondary to your love for God. The wealth of your affection is to flow forth to Him who gave His life for you. Living for God, the soul sends forth to Him its best and highest affections. Is the greatest outflow of your love toward Him who died for you? If it is, your love for each other will be after heaven’s order.

The Fruitage of Excesses

It is not pure, holy love which leads the wife to gratify the animal propensities of her husband at the expense of health and life. If she possesses true love and wisdom, she will seek to divert his mind from the gratification of lustful passions to high and spiritual themes by dwelling upon interesting spiritual subjects. It may be necessary to humbly and affectionately urge, even at the risk of his displeasure, that she cannot debase her body by yielding to sexual excess. She should, in a tender, kind manner, remind him that God has the first and highest claim upon her entire being, and that she cannot disregard this claim, for she will be held accountable in the great day of God. “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? He asks for your intellect; give it. It is His. He asks for your money; give it. It is His. “Ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. COL 394.4

To the rich no less than to the poor are the words of the Holy Spirit spoken, “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. When men believe this, their possessions will be held as a trust, to be used as God shall direct, for the saving of the lost, and the comfort of the suffering and the poor. With man this is impossible, for the heart clings to its earthly treasure. The soul that is bound in service to mammon is deaf to the cry of human need. But with God all things are possible. By beholding the matchless love of Christ, the selfish heart will be melted and subdued. The rich man will be led, as was Saul the Pharisee, to say, “What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.” Philippians 3:7, 8. Then they will not count anything their own. They will joy to regard themselves as stewards of the manifold grace of God, and for His sake servants of all men.

You do not live up to the light God has given and while you neglect one ray of light that the Lord has graciously permitted to shine upon your pathway, you will be in darkness. In consideration of the price paid for us, shall we not yield our bodies and souls up to Him who has bought us with His blood? Shall not that which He has redeemed be kept in as wholesome and pure and holy a condition as possible? Christ has redeemed us; our very flesh He has saved at an infinite cost, giving His own flesh for the life of the world. The lower passions have their seat in the body and work through it. The words “flesh” or “fleshly” or “carnal lusts” [1 Peter 2:11] embrace the lower, corrupt nature; the flesh of itself cannot act contrary to the will of God. We are commanded to crucify the flesh, with the affections and lusts. How shall we do it? Shall we inflict pain on the body? No; but put to death the temptation to sin. The corrupt thought is to be expelled. Every thought is to be brought into captivity to Jesus Christ. All animal propensities are to be subjected to the higher powers of the soul. The love of God must reign supreme; Christ must occupy an undivided throne. Our bodies are to be regarded as His purchased possession. The members of the body are to become the instruments of righteousness.

We have been “bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20), not “with corruptible things, as silver and gold, ... but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18, 19); “that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him which died for them, and rose again” (2 Corinthians 5:15).

1SM 95.3

The human family have all the help that Christ had in their conflicts with Satan. They need not be overcome. They may be more than conquerors through Him who has loved them and given His life for them. “Ye are bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20). And what a price! The Son of God in His humanity wrestled with the very same fierce, apparently overwhelming temptations that assail men—temptations to indulgence of appetite, to presumptuous venturing where God has not led them, and to the worship of the god of this world, to sacrifice an eternity of bliss for the fascinating pleasures of this life. Everyone will be tempted, but the Word declares that we shall not be tempted above our ability to bear. We may resist and defeat the wily foe.

Chapter 11—What Are We Worth?

1SM 100.2

O that we might comprehend more fully the infinite price that has been paid for our redemption! Paul declares, “Ye are bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20); and it is true; for the price paid is nothing less than the life of the only-begotten Son of God. Let us all consider this. We may refuse the invitations that Christ sends to us; we may neglect His offer of pardon and peace; but still it remains a fact that every one of us has been bought with a price, even with the precious blood of the Son of God. Therefore, “Consider him” (Hebrews 12:3).

1SM 100.3

You have cost much. “Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20). That which you may regard as your own is God’s. Take care of His property. He has bought you with an infinite price. Your mind is His. What right has any person to abuse a body that belongs not to himself, but to the Lord Jesus Christ? What satisfaction can anyone take in gradually lessening the powers of body and mind by selfish indulgence of any form?

“Ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20). What does the Lord require of His blood-bought heritage? The sanctification of the whole being—purity like the purity of Christ, perfect conformity to the will of the Lord. What is it that constitutes the beauty of the soul? The presence of the grace of Him who gave His life to redeem men and women from eternal death....

Lectures should be diligently kept up as a means of teaching the patients how to prevent disease by a wise course of action. By means of these lectures the patients may be shown the responsibility resting on them to keep the body in the most healthful condition because it is the Lord’s purchased possession. Mind, soul, and body are bought with a price.... “Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20)....

Appetite exerts a controlling influence in the world. Unlawful indulgence in appetite and passion paralyzes the brain power, and deadens all the moral sensibilities and perceptions. But we have all been bought with a price, even with the precious blood of the Son of God, and we have no right to abuse our powers by the selfish gratification of lust. “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” 1 Peter 1:18, 19. “For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:20. We should keep ourselves in a condition to render to God the most perfect service possible. With an eye single to His glory, we should seek to live in harmony with the laws of our being. “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31.

God and the human agent must cooperate. Those who place a proper value on themselves will take proper care of the body. They will work in harmony with the words, “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” [1 Corinthians 6:20].

Do not, I entreat of you, be hindered by Satan’s suggestions. He will tell you you have no feeling. Why should you expect feeling when you have not, on your part, taken the steps required to fulfil the conditions? Jesus is saying, “Give Me thine heart.” [Proverbs 23:26.] Have you done this? Jesus has purchased you by an infinite price. You are not your own. Your powers are not your own. You belong to God. You are His property, “therefore glorify God in your body and spirit which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.] You help and strengthen each other in your impenitence. Now both move together. Cease to be careless, cease to be indifferent.

A Christian life will be revealed by Christian thoughts, Christian words, and Christian deportment. In Christ there is a divine completeness of character. In Christ we will work the works of Christ. We shall in Christ sense our binding, far-reaching obligations to God and to our fellow man. His life is not his own. “Ye are bought with a price,” even the precious blood of the Son of God. [1 Corinthians 6:20.] There are many cords which unite us to our fellow men, to humanity, and to God, and this relationship is solemn with its weight of responsibility. It is no light and easy matter to live so as to meet the mind of God. The life of Christ must be put into our life.

Here is represented the great white throne and He that sat on it, from whose face the earth and heaven fled away. Let every teacher consider that he is doing his work in the sight of the universe of heaven. Every child with whom the teacher is brought in contact has been purchased by the blood of God’s only begotten Son, and He who died for these children would have you treat them as His property. Be sure that your contact, teachers, with every one of these children shall be of that character that will not make you ashamed when you meet them in that great day when every word and action is brought in review before God and, with its burden of results laid open before you individually. “Bought with a price”—O What a price, eternity alone will reveal. They should respond to His love by giving Him the strength of body, mind, and soul. They are to show to the world that a change has been wrought in them by the transforming power of Christ.

Satan is making determined efforts to hinder you from being a witness for Christ. Break away from the influence he is casting over you by keeping your mind dwelling upon things that sadden the mind and break down the health. Do not permit him to imperil your soul and to cause great unhappiness to others. Come out of the cave, and talk with God. You can only break the spell of the enemy by arousing yourself from your helplessness, by training your mind to dwell upon cheerful and hopeful subjects. Take the position that you are not your own, but that you are God’s property bought at an infinite price. “Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.] Everyone who truly believes receives the Holy Spirit, and there is manifest truth of His working when the character is transformed. This miracle gives to the world a testimony of the grace and power of God.

We are not our own.

If the Word of God is cherished as an abiding principle in the heart, and held fast under all and every circumstance, man is brought, with his entrusted capabilities, [into subjection] to the Lord Jesus Christ. His undivided powers, even his thoughts, are brought into captivity to Christ. This is true sanctification. All the parts of the experience blend in complete harmony. He is “wanting in nothing.” He does not keep part to himself, to do with just as he pleases. He is bought with a price, and he knows it, because the Word of God declares it; and therefore he glorifies God in his body and spirit, which are Christ’s. [1 Corinthians 6:20.]

Hattie, dear child, these words are written for you. You have an individual case pending in the courts of heaven. May the Lord touch your heart, and lead you to see that you are not your own, but that you are the property of Jesus Christ. You are bought with a price, and what a price! “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] “Therefore glorify God in your body and spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.]

When men work interestedly and with fidelity, there will be expedition. The Lord would have all in His service educate themselves to do this. Whether it is to till the soil, to fell trees, to clear the land, plant trees, sow the seed, or garner the harvest, the command is given, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might.” [Ecclesiastes 9:10.] Time is golden, and the Lord is not pleased with indolence and negligence in any one. “Ye are bought with a price,” He said, “therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.] All who will seek to be faithful in that which is least will be faithful in that which is much.

If your mind will become rational in regard to your soul’s eternal welfare, you will make a decided change in your behavior. All your sprees and selfish indulgences will become abhorrent to you. You will see and sense that your whole life has been a system of robbery of God. “Ye are bought with a price,” God says, “therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.] No single talent entrusted to any man appears of little consequence, but the Lord has appointed a place for that talent that it may be used in blessing others. It makes every difference not only to your future, eternal interest how you use the Lord’s talents, whether small or great; it makes every difference in this life whether your course of action is approved or disapproved of God.

The human family have all the help that Christ had, in their conflicts with Satan. They need not be overcome. They may be more than conquerors through Him who has loved them and given His life for them. “Ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.] And what a price! The Son of God in His humanity wrestled with the very same fierce, apparently overwhelming, temptations that assail men—temptations to indulgence of appetite, to presumptuous venturing where God has not led them, and to the worship of the god of this world, to sacrifice an eternity of bliss for the fascinating pleasures of this life. Everyone will be tempted, but the Word declares that we shall not be tempted above our ability to bear. We may resist and defeat the wily foe.

All these things make their impression. Conversation will sometimes arise. Words will be spoken that will open a flood of light to the patient as to methods of caring for the body, the temple of God. There must be the greatest care to preserve decency and strict purity in conversation and in every action. A small, crowded bathroom leaves impressions on the mind of cheapness and commonness, which should not be. Everything that pertains to the human structure should be spoken of, if at all, as God’s property. He made it and He will care for the body. “Ye are the temple of the living God.” 2 Corinthians 6:16. Unless Dr. Kellogg shall come to the feet of Jesus as a little child, and receive instruction from Him, there will be continual friction so long as we endeavor to co-operate with him. The Lord desires us to make decided movements to bind up the work in a straight, intelligent manner. We are no longer to permit ourselves to be distressingly hindered. God calls upon His gospel medical missionaries to break every yoke. They are to comply with the conditions that Christ has outlined. He invited those who are bearing heavy burdens to come to Him. “Come unto Me,” He says, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” [Matthew 11:28, 29.] We need not be hindered by binding contracts, or bonds, or lawyer-framed documents. I inquire of our church members, Are you receiving precious beams of light that you may reflect them to others? Open the windows of the soul to the Sun of righteousness, that you may be enlightened, warned, and renovated by His glorious beams. Will you be satisfied with lip service only, while your hearts are far from God? Can you serve God while you are carrying out selfish ideas for your own exaltation? It is a positive denial of Christ for us to leave the path that Christ marks out and follow our own plans. You cannot obtain satisfaction until you surrender the whole mind, soul, and strength, to serve the Lord with meekness and humility, yet with a joyfulness that will bear witness to the grace that is renewed to you day by day. Having surrendered your whole being to the service of Christ, to be worked by His Holy Spirit, realizing that you have been bought with a price, you will seek to “glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are His.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.] You are His blood-bought possession.

But we want the lower class. That is the highest for us to obtain, because self lives. What we want is to deny self, and take up the cross and follow Christ. Our body must be kept under control of reason, because we want health; we want all the health we can get. Those that have fallen into wrong habits do not need to abide there. Cling to the mighty One. O that we might comprehend more fully the infinite price that has been paid for our redemption! Paul declares, “Ye are bought with a price” [1 Corinthians 6:20]; and it is true; for the price paid is nothing less than the life of the only begotten Son of God. Let us all consider this. We may refuse the invitations that Christ sends to us; we may neglect His offer of pardon and peace; but still it remains a fact that every one of us has been bought with a price, even with the precious blood of the Son of God. Therefore, “Consider Him.” [Hebrews 12:3.]

He has bought you with an infinite price. Your mind is His. What right has any person to abuse a body that belongs not to himself, but to the Lord Jesus Christ? What satisfaction can any one take in gradually lessening the powers of body and mind by selfish indulgence of any form? God has given to every human being a brain. He desires that it shall be used to His glory. By it, man is enabled to co-operate with God in efforts to save perishing fellow mortals. We have none too much brainpower for reasoning facilities. We are to educate and train every power of mind and body—the human mechanism that Christ has bought—in order that we may put it to the best possible use. I have received special light that no minister should have kept before him the necessity of getting married. The thoughts of the students in our schools should not be diverted from the great object of their school work, which is to qualify body, and mind, and soul to glorify God. Let the minds of students be diverted from the great object of life to the subject of marriage, and they lose much of the advantages they should obtain in the school. Let our students make the most of their time to gain a knowledge of Him who gave His life to make it possible for every human being to grasp eternal life. From childhood to manhood or womanhood, we are to consider the meaning of the words of the apostle, “Ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.] When the father and mother realize this, they will live lives that are consecrated to God; they will copy Christ’s example and seek to be complete in Him.

Strange things will be brought in among us who have had the light, but who have not walked in the light. Satan will work in every possible way with his deceptive wiles to undermine the faith of our people. But, my children, watch unto prayer, draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Let not your faith waver. If ever there were a time when there was need of daily consecration to God, it is now. Our faith must center in Him who is the gift of God to our world. “Ye are bought with a price,” the apostle says. If parents will teach their children to conduct themselves according to the principles of the Word of God, these children will unconsciously teach others what it means to be Christians. Let parents maintain true Christian dignity before their children, and they will be greatly aided in their work of upbuilding the kingdom of Christ.

We Are to Value God’s Marvelous Works, May 20

RC 154.4

If we are partakers of the divine nature, we will live in communion with our Creator and value all of God’s work which led David to exclaim, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” We will not consider the organs of the body our own property, as if we had created them. All the faculties God has given to the human body are to be appreciated.... “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20).
