“Ye Are Not Your Own”
CCh 215.3
“Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

Place yourselves in the most favorable position possible for the development and cultivation of Christian character. Place yourself in connection with the light shining from heaven. I beg of you both to choose Christ as your Saviour. And choose for your companionship the society of those whom the Lord is teaching, leading, and guiding. Let not Satan have his way and his will that he may through his temptations sift you as wheat. I beseech of you to have respect to the recompense of the reward. We have a Saviour who has ascended to heaven to be our Advocate, and to prepare mansions for us. He says that He will come again. He will take us to Himself, that where He is we may be also. The Lord has bought you with the price of His own blood. “Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and spirit which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

“Know ye not that ... ye are not your own, but ye are bought with a price? Therefore glorify God in your body and your spirit which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] It is your duty to be an example to all with whom you are brought in contact. We are required to grow in grace and the knowledge of the Truth. “So grow up into the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

It is our duty to render implicit obedience to the divine injunctions. Our faith must grasp the mercy and forgiveness of our sins. Then, believing that our sins are pardoned, we are no longer to walk in the path of transgression but yield ourselves to the will of God. Every day that we fail to do God’s will we rob Him who has said, “Ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

When will the minds of fallen men, ransomed by the blood of Christ, understand how to receive the righteousness of Christ as a free gift, bestowed without money and without price because men had nothing that he naturally possessed in money or in virtue of character that belonged to his individual self? He could not even claim to be owner of himself. “Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price,” even the precious blood of the Son of God. [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] The present and eternal security of man is in his surety, Jesus Christ, the Righteous. Jesus has bought you soul, body, and spirit. “Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are his.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Attend meeting, and bear your testimony as the witness of Christ, and do not adopt unlawful, doubtful measures with a view of disentangling yourself from your present, embarrassing situation. Endure the pressure. Submit to wrong, bear the suffering part of religion for Christ’s sake, rather than sin against God by seeking to deliver yourself. Instead of the requirements of God being relaxed in the New Testament, the lines are drawn closer, and duty is more distinctly defined. The apostle says, “Whatsoever ye do,” even in the matter of eating and drinking, “do all to the glory of God.” [1 Corinthians 10:31.] The question may be asked, “May I not do what I like with myself? Am I never to have my own way? Is not my body my own?” You may have your own way, but it will be at the loss of your soul, or you may have God’s way and live to a purpose in this world, and in the world to come have life everlasting. “Ye are not your own, for you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The salvation of souls is above every other consideration. He who is a worker together with God wrestles with God in prayer that he may be imbued with His Spirit, that under the constraining power of the Holy Spirit he may win souls to Jesus. He denies self as did Jesus; he lifts the cross through evil as well as good report. If tempted, through flattering presentations made by human agents, he has one answer for them: “I am not my own, I have been bought with a price. I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” [See 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20; Galatians 2:20.] Every member of the church may do a good work for Jesus is he works in Christ’s lines. Truth will triumph gloriously if self is not introduced into the work and allowed to mar the beauty of the sacred, eternal truth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Christ has bought our hearts. Christ has bought the human intelligence. Christ has bought the reasoning powers, and Christ has entrusted us with capabilities and with powers. He does not want that we should let these powers and capabilities be employed merely in the common things of earthly substance, and lose sight of the eternal. 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. He came to our world when Satan appeared to have the human race under his control. The Lord Jesus made our world. Everything was made by Christ. Here Christ through God created our world, and He engaged before the foundation of the world that if man that was created in Eden should transgress the law of God, He would take the penalty of their transgression upon Himself. And He did this. Then has He no right to instruct His subjects what to do, that they shall not miss the eternal reward? Who, I ask you of this congregation, will absorb brain, bone and muscle for the acquisition of merely temporal advantages?Counsels on Health

“Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The Lord is soon to come and your inquiry every day should be, how shall I subdue the spirit of worldliness which continually seeks to exert its deadly influence over my soul which has been bought with an infinite price? You should daily cultivate love for Jesus who took [upon] his own divine soul the punishment for your sins. Have you ever considered how many there are who might have had eternal life who have satisfied themselves with the things of this present life, and have lost eternity out of their reckoning. It is time for us to consider seriously our responsibility in the matter of influence in the church. On whose side are you placing your influence? Jesus who died to save you and your children, says to you, “He that is not for me is against me, and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” [Matthew 12:30.] You cannot estimate the influence you may exert over those who have not the love and fear of God and who are in the darkness of error. “Ye are not your own. For ye are brought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] You are privileged to be coworkers with Christ in saving your own souls and the souls of your children. But if you are coworkers with Christ you will teach your children that they cannot live to please their associates when this involves displeasing God. What will please God is to be first, and what will please your neighbors secondary. What your neighbors will think or say or do is not be the standard to which you are to fashion your character or mould your course. By your example you are to teach your children, who are God’s purchased heritage, that they are to regard the law of God as the rule of life, and to avoid transgression in every particular. You are responsible to God to give your neighbors an example that they may follow. By your practical obedience to all his requirements, you are to teach them to avoid all disloyalty. Your piety is to be active, earnest, sincere, and in practicing godliness you will decide your own destiny, and the destiny of your loved ones for eternal life.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Many of the ones with whom the Spirit is striving will yield their heart, mind, soul, and strength and will resist the truth in order to be linked up with the world. They are doing despite to the Spirit of grace and taking sides with the rebel chief. I am instructed to say, Do not yield to Satan in your hour of resolve but yield to Him whose you are by creation and by redemption. Bear in mind that “Ye are not your own.” You are bought with a price, even the life of the Son of God. “Therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Will you discard your ownership here in this world? Will you refuse to be a partaker with Christ of His suffering, self-denial and of His cross-bearing? The guiltless [One] standing at the head of humanity, He is united with them to show men the way to heaven. He gave them power to become sons of God. And yet there are souls He gave His life to save who refuse His mercy, refuse to obey His commandments. Sickness may come, reason be removed, and there is no time or inclination for repentance. Satan has overcome the human agent. Can it be that Christ is discarded, that the service of Satan is chosen, because the way is broad, the gate wide, and the whole world seems to be going therein? What is your choice—Christ or the world?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Not with gold or silver, but with the precious blood of Christ. “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as gold and silver, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, who by him do believe in God, that raised him from the dead, and gave him glory, that your faith and hope might be in God.” [1 Peter 1:18-21.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Let every youth feel, “I am not my own. I am bought with a price.” [See 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] His talents and opportunities are his only to improve, and conscientiously to improve for the honor of His Creator. With this conviction, he cannot be idle, he cannot waste time, he cannot be a trifler. A sense of our responsibility to glorify God is the most powerful of all incentives to the improvement of the intellect. Let the student have the most important lesson kept before him. Let him labor as in full view of the great sacrifice that Christ has made, and he will study as for eternity. He will put forth patient, taxing labor to make the most of himself possible, that he may yoke up with Christ and work to His name’s glory. And his perseverance and industry will be rewarded.10LtMs, Ms 25a, 1895, par. 9
The value of heavenly wisdom, of the impartation of gifts from God, has been lost sight of in unsanctified ambition to glorify self. O, what precious endowments are waiting to be bestowed upon youth who have diligently trained all their powers to work in harmony with God. I appeal to youth to surrender all to God and lay hold of help from above, that you may put your educated ability into work for the Master. What is education that is enduring unto eternal life? The first thing to learn is, that “Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price.” What is the principle that is to characterize the life? “Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit which are God’s.” [Verses 19, 20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

His invitation to work in His vineyard is also a command. “What? know ye not that your bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have in God, and ye are not your own? God requires the body to be rendered a living sacrifice to Him, not a dead or a dying sacrifice. The offerings of the ancient Hebrews were to be without blemish, and will it be pleasing to God to accept a human offering that is filled with disease and corruption? He tells us that our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost; and He requires us to take care of this temple, that it may be a fit habitation for His Spirit. The apostle Paul gives us this admonition: “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. All should be very careful to preserve the body in the best condition of health, that they may render to God perfect service and do their duty in the family and in society.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

But to abide in Christ means to forsake all and follow in his footsteps. The lawyer came to Christ and asked, “Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” This was a pointed, definite question, and Jesus answered him by referring him to the law of God. He said, “What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou has answered right: this do and thou shalt live. But he willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?” [Luke 10:25-29.] Then Jesus gave him a lesson that revealed to him the fact that every needy soul is our neighbor. To accept the gospel message means to love God with all the heart and our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus cannot accept a divided heart. The heart that is absolved in and controlled by earthly affections, cannot be given up to God. No adequate excuse can be framed for refusing to love God supremely, and our neighbors as ourselves. This comprehends the whole duty of man. The Lord Jesus who has paid the ransom price for humanity, demands a willing service from his purchased possession. “Ye are not your own,” “ye are bought with a price,” even with the precious blood of the Son of God. [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] The new life that comes to the soul through conversion, comes through communion with God, and produces God-likeness in the character. Love, peace, joy, faith, gratitude and hope spring up in the renewed soul. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, (to the love of the world, and to self-serving,) and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth, fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry, for which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.” [Colossians 3:1-6.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

If possible, I would awaken the sluggish mind to realize that we are bought with a price. “Ye are not your own, for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Think of what Christ suffered in order to ransom man from the slavery of sin. Think of what opportunities are within our reach if we would but see our privileges. Looking at it from this standpoint no one will venture to degrade himself in any way. The mind, the physical organism, the soul temple, every nerve, sinew, and muscle, may be weakened and crippled through inaction. But this is not pleasing to God. A great lesson is learned when we understand our relation to God, and His relation to us. The words, “Ye are not your own; ye are bought with a price,” should be hung in memory’s hall, that we may ever recognize God’s right to our talents, our property, our influence, our individual selves. [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] We are to learn how to treat this gift of God, in mind, in soul, in body, that as Christ’s purchased possession, we may do Him healthful, savory service.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

“Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Nearly all the members of the human family eat more than the system requires. This excess decays, and becomes a putrid mass. Catarrhal difficulties, kidney diseases, headache, and heart troubles, are the result of immoderate eating. Even so-called health reform needs reforming on this point. When men and women cease to indulge their appetites by eating too largely of food of a questionable character, when they treat the stomach as respectfully as it deserves to be treated, when they relieve it of one-half or two-thirds of the laborious task they now require it to perform, when nature is more respected than perverted appetite, there will be a change for the better in health and morals.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

In Battle Creek, and in other places, building has been added to building, for the sake of making an imposing display. Men have supposed that this would give character to the work. Their own characters needed the transforming grace of Christ, which would enable them to represent Christ. This alone is sufficient to give character to the work. Nothing can be done without his grace. The Lord suffers impediments to arise, that his wisdom and power may humbly and earnestly and perseveringly sought, and be distinctly manifest. Nothing will so quickly and decidedly separate the soul from God and bring defeat, as for man to lift up his soul unto vanity, and speak proudly and boastingly, and in a masterly manner to his fellow men, who are the property of God. “Ye are not your own; ... ye are bought with a price,” even the precious blood of the Son of God. God’s instrumentalities should seek to follow in the footsteps of the divine Healer. Your souls should be pervaded with a deep sense that every faculty of mind, soul, and body, is to be employed to honor and glorify Him. Both <of you need to> understand the heart’s need to maintain the most intimate, conscious connection with the pure, sacred springs from which it derives its vital force. Your supposed, most virtuous habits, your conclusions, need to be closely examined. Your life-experience as children of God must penetrate deeper than habit or opinion or authority. Those with whom you associate may discern nothing lacking, which they can put into words, and yet the atmosphere which surrounds your soul may not be instinct with the peace and grace of the principles of truth and righteousness and the tender pitying love which dwells in Jesus Christ.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Will we obey the summons of God, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee”? [Isaiah 60:1.] Unless the members of the church shall arise and shine, the Lord God will bring them to an account. He wants that in every sense of the word every man shall be at his post of duty. Everyone is to become intelligent as to what his talents are, and consecrate himself to God, soul, body, and spirit. The Lord has given to every man his work. There are to be no idlers in the Lord’s vineyard. Will the church arise and shine? Will they be “not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord”? [Romans 12:11.] We must make the consecration of ourselves to God, and then we only return to Him the service which is His own. All is His, and we can misapply our powers to self-service, but in that we rob God. All we render to God is His, just as really His whether we recognize the fact of not. It is best for our present and eternal interest to demonstrate that we understand “Ye are not your own.” “Ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Being the Lord’s property, His interest always comes first. Indulgence of the baser passions will lead very many to shut their eyes to the light, for they fear that they will see sins which they are unwilling to forsake. All may see if they will. If they choose darkness rather than light, their criminality will be none the less. God calls for young men and young women to learn in His school to use the gift that is in them, to put on the armor of righteousness, making no provision for the flesh. Our work is not to use our power in selfish projects. We are in the very last period of this earth’s history. If the cause and work of God can be better advanced by your individual toil, talent, or wealth, who will draw back, refusing to give to the Lord that which He requires to sustain His work in our world? I know not that I have made this subject sufficiently plain. True religion places every human agent under obligation to do his best. “Ye are not your own.” You are not to feel at liberty to do what you please. “Ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Each individual in our world is under obligation to God which cannot be measured. If we would only realize this, what a conviction of accountability would pervade our lives. Those who have a sense of their moral and religious obligation are the only ones who will make trustworthy teachers, for they are the only ones who will carry a burden for souls, in them every act and enterprise is subordinated to the universal law—obedience. Lord, what wilt thou have me to do, is the inquiry of the soul. They keep their eyes directed heavenward, that they may be approved by God, workmen that need not to be ashamed. They maintain a watching, praying attitude. They remember the words, “Ye are not your own. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” [Verses 16-19.] “What, know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The love of Christ is to be revealed, not only as the motive of action, but as the pattern for all plans, all sacrifices. If the truth is received into good and honest hearts, it will lead the receiver to see that day by day he is to make an entire, unreserved surrender of every faculty, every capability. The powers of soul, body, and spirit are to be given in willing, wholehearted service to Him who bought the human family with His own blood. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price. Penitence mingled with thanksgiving should be our experience every day. “Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Study every plan, every method, used in your business, and think whether this business will most glorify God. To every man God has given his work. We should carefully weigh the matters relative to the work we take up. Will this work be a blessing to souls? God has not given us work merely to keep us busy, but for His name’s glory. Many are busily engaged gathering wood, hay, stubble. But this will all be consumed, leaving nothing to prepare souls for that great day when every work is to be tried by fire. We should keep the words of Christ ever before us: “Ye are not your own; ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] The first and highest and most acceptable missionary work that the student can do is to obey God in all he does, in every action of the wonderful machinery God devised in the formation of man. He is not to treat himself indifferently, he is to know himself, and work with an intelligent knowledge of what he can do, and do safely, and what he should avoid in eating and in working.Fundamentals of Christian Education

The Lord himself has spoken upon this subject of the care of the body. He says in His word, “If any man destroyeth the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” 1 Corinthians 3:17, R. V. This scripture enjoins a conscientious care of the body, and condemns all ignorant or careless neglect. And again: “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20; 10:31.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Ye are not your own; “for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] It will cost self-humiliation, self-denial, self-sacrifice, a constant conflict with human passions. Our natural temperaments cannot be carried along in the road cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in. Shame and weakness and disgrace are the sure result of professedly following Christ while walking in the ways and practices of unrenewed, unconverted men.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

God has given men and women their capabilities to be used to His name’s glory. Shall we not admire the wisdom of the great Teacher in delivering to us a code of pure, simple moral obligations as the standard of character, that we may not be blind as to the fitness of character we are required to have? God has given to men and women reasoning powers, talents that should be sanctified to His service. God calls upon us, in the place of expending our powers, our talents, and the vigor of brain and muscle upon unimportant, frivolous things merely to amuse and gratify self, to bring eternity to view, and hold ourselves under the control of the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Elevated, pure, ennobling themes are to be the subjects of contemplation. If we are saved, it will be through Christ and Him alone. “What, know ye not that ... ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Think of the price that was paid for us! The world has received the gift of God’s only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. We gain perfection by coming to Christ, who is as the tree of life to us. We were brought into existence because we were needed. God’s vast design in the mediatorial economy shows that He has embraced all humanity in His plan. He calls upon men and women to show themselves Christians, that they may fill their appointment as agents chosen to carry out His purposes.13LtMs, Ms 124, 1898, par. 33
God’s claims upon us are all-powerful, because all that we have is only ours by sufferance. It is entrusted to us to see whether we will be obedient. The claim of redemption is above all other plans, for in it every claim is involved. “Ye are not your own: for ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which is God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.]13LtMs, Ms 124, 1898, par. 35
Many are lost to God through individual consent. But Christ is represented as hunting, searching for the sheep that was lost. It is His love that encircles us, bringing us back to the fold, giving us the privilege of sitting together with Him in heavenly places. When the blessed light of the Sun of Righteousness shines into our hearts, we sit in peace and joy in the Lord. Oh, praise the Lord! Praise Him who is the light of our countenance and our salvation. “What? know ye not that ... ye are not your own? for ye are bought with a price.” [Verses 19, 20.] This is the science and song of all the heavenly universe.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The extensive use of this health-and-life-destroying weed should make every Christian afraid of this fashionable altar erected when he lays himself voluntarily upon it, a manacled victim of sacrifice. The wonderful human machinery requires not this narcotic. The fashionable sins in this respect make it the more offensive in the sight of a pure and holy God. Fashion cannot make the sin less or sanction it and make you guiltless as an accountable being in the sight of a holy God. “Ye are not your own.” “Ye are bought we a price:”—and what a price!—“therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” Body and spirit alike are affected. Will human beings defile the temple of the body which God has demanded of you shall be kept pure and holy? “What, know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. “For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.” Romans 14:7. “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:11.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Our spiritual perceptions must be kept in a state of healthy, progressive development. We are to understand and how to make the most perfect use of every organ God has given, that He may be glorified in the beings He has created. Human beings are the Lord’s by creation, and doubly so by redemption, for He gave His only begotten Son to redeem them. How natural it is to regard ourselves as complete owners of ourselves. But the inspired Word declares, “Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Speech is a talent, and can be used to honor or dishonor God. We are accountable for our use of the talent of words. In our relation to our fellow men we are owners of our entrusted mental and physical capabilities. In our relation to God, we are borrowers, stewards of His grace. In Heavenly Places

“Know ye not that ... ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20). What a price has been paid for us! Behold the cross, and the Victim uplifted upon it. All who come to Christ sincerely receive a full, precious, gracious welcome. All who will believe the words of Christ unwaveringly will surely receive. All who accept Christ as their personal Saviour are received as children of God. The sinner who takes God at His Word and trusts His promises has the assurance that he is accepted. And if he will rely implicitly upon God he will have a most precious experience in giving up self to God, to do Him service. Our first business is to work for God. Those to whom the Lord has entrusted much are to trade intelligently on their Lord’s goods, that out of the treasury of the heart they may bring forth good things. In order to do this they must treat the stomach carefully, for if the stomach is a cesspool, the brain is congested and the temper is unpleasant. God has made known the conditions of salvation: “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” [Mark 8:34.] The Word declares what this involves—the surrender of all the capabilities to Christ, to be sanctified through His grace and employed in His service. There is to be no wasting, no embezzling of the Lord’s goods; for this is robbery toward God. It is a perilous matter for us to use inconsiderately the powers entrusted to us. This is a representation of the result of faithfulness in returning to the Lord His own. The Lord saw just how it would be when the world was filled with inhabitants, and therefore He makes a covenant with His people that they should give Him their tithes and offerings, according to the arrangement which He has made. This is His. It does not belong to any of you. God has made this arrangement with you, that you may show that you realize your dependence and accountability to God by returning to Him His portion. If you do this, His blessing will come upon you. All that we have is the Lord’s, intrusted to us as His stewards. That which we hand back to Him He must first give to us. The Lord is trying and testing us by every dollar that comes into our possession, to see if we will acknowledge Him. How? By appearing before the world as the people who acknowledge their accountability to God by giving Him all they possess. The Lord Jesus Christ calls upon me to set these things before the believers and unbelievers—to be merciful even as your Father which is in heaven is merciful. Only think of the Gift, the great Gift to our world to save sinners, and the gifts of God’s bounties to provide for you the means to do this. Your sinful condition demanded a sacrifice. In your spiritual destitution you had not one thing of your own to offer. Your own self did not belong to you as your own property, for you were bought with a price. “Ye are not your own ... for ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

We are responsible to God for the purchase money paid for our ransom. “Ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] What is the work before us? If our capabilities are weak, we should make them strong. If we have not accepted some of the precious gifts of God, we should by living faith seize these gifts, saying, “They shall be mine,” and they will be ours. It is our duty to reach a higher standard than we have yet attained. If a careful consideration of our privileges, and of our failure to properly represent our Redeemer before others, does not arouse us and keep us from partaking of a worldly spirit, what will?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

In every respect you are to honor God by being partakers of His divine nature, that you may have the assurance of sins pardoned, which would testify of the love of God. But there is not in our experience that pleasantness and joyousness that there should be. Christ says that if He is in us, our joy will be full. Let us then be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Let us not, by living inconsistent, earthly, sensual lives, heap reproach upon Christ. Let us rise above the malarious atmosphere that pervades the world and breathe the breath of God. Let us feed upon the bread of life. Christ declares that if we eat His flesh and drink His blood, we shall have eternal life. His Word will be to us as the leaves of the tree of life if we will believe in Christ as our personal Saviour. If we eat the bread that came down from heaven, we shall have a life connection with God. We shall bring eternity into our reckoning. We shall live as in the presence of the whole heavenly host. The angels are watching and guarding us. God loves us, but we fail to cherish that love. We are losing in spirituality. God wants us to recognize His ownership in every human being. He has His claims. “They are mine,” [See Malachi 3:17.] He says. I have bought them with a price. “Ye are not your own. ... therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] Will you do this? Many turn away from the light, offended because a word of caution is given, and ask, “May we not do as we please with ourselves?” Did you create yourselves? Did you pay the redemption price for your souls and bodies? If so, you belong to yourselves. But the Word of God declares, “Ye are bought with a price,” “the precious blood of Christ.” The Word of God tells us plainly that our habits are to be strictly guarded and controlled. “Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.” Shall we do this? The Word of God is perfect, converting the soul. If we diligently heed its precepts, we shall be conformed, physically, spiritually into the image of God. We cannot excuse our natural and cultivated weaknesses of character, so dishonoring to our Saviour, on the plea, “O! it is my way.” Unless Christ’s followers give up their way for His way, they will always have misgivings and will waver, tossing to and fro like a wave of the sea. Those who cherish defects of character, pleasing self, will suffer the sure penalty. They will find themselves strengthless, Christless. You may ask, “May I not do as I choose with myself? Is not my body my own?”—No; for the Word of God plainly stated that you are not your own, that you are a member of Christ’s body. “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? They act as if they had a right to use with prodigality the gifts that God entrusts to them to be used wisely. They walk and talk as if riches entitle them to the highest honor. Sometimes the poor are favored by the wealthy; but more often the monied men waste their Lord’s goods in selfish indulgence. “Ye are not your own,” Christ has declared. “Ye are bought with a price.” [1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.] We desire to see poor, deceived, guilty, perishing souls rescued. We desire to see every church member carrying a burden for the unsaved. This the Christian pledges himself to do when he receives baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
