Context of Zechariah 5:4
2Then the angel asked me, “What do you see?” I replied, “I see a flying scroll twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.” 3He said to me: “This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land: everyone who steals will be swept away from here according to it, and everyone who swears will be swept away from here according to it.” “I will send it out”—it is a declaration of Adonai-Tzva’ot—“and it will enter into the house of the thief and into the house of the one who swears falsely by My Name and will reside inside his house destroying it, both its wood and its stones.” 5Then the angel speaking with me came forward, and said to me, “Now lift up your eyes and see what is appearing.” 6I asked, “What is it?” He replied, “This is the measuring basket that goes out.” He continued, “This is their eye in all the land.”

They robbed God by neglecting to give Him His due in building His house, while they built their own houses, forswearing their obligations to Him; therefore, the "houses" they build shall be "consumed" with God's "curse." Probably literal theft and perjury accompanied their virtual theft and perjury as to the temple of God (Mal 3:5). Stealing and perjury go…Read the comment
