Context of Psalms 38:15
13They who seek my life set traps. Those who seek my hurt threaten destruction, uttering lies all day. 14But I, like someone deaf, hear nothing, like a mute, not opening his mouth. Yes, I am like one who cannot hear, whose mouth has no arguments. 16But I wait for You, Adonai— You will answer, O Lord my God. 17For I said: “Don’t let them gloat over me or exalt themselves over me, when my foot slips.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15In thee, O Lord, do I hope - I have no helper but thee. Thou wilt hear, O Lord my God - Thou art eternal in thy compassions, and wilt hear the prayer of a penitent soul. In the printed copies of the Hebrew text we have אלהי אדני Adonai Elohai, Lord my God; but, instead of אדני Adonai, one hundred and two of Kennicott's and De Rossi's MSS. read יהוה Yehovah . As this word is never pronounced by the Jews, and they consider it dreadfully sacred, in reading…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15For in thee, O Lord, do I hope - This shows the reason or ground of his patience. He committed his whole cause to God. He believed that God would take care of his reputation, and that he would vindicate him. See Psalm 37:5-6. He had no doubt that He would protect his character, and that, notwithstanding the reproaches of his enemies, his true character would at last be made to shine forth, so that all men would see that he had been unjustly aspersed. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-22Verses 12-22 Wicked men hate goodness, even when they benefit by it. David, in the complaints he makes of his enemies, seems to refer to Christ. But our enemies do us real mischief only when they drive us from God and our duty. The true believer's trouble will be made useful; he will learn to wait for his God, and will not seek relief from the world or himself. The less we notice the unkindness and injuries that are done us, the more we consult the quiet…Read the comment
