Context of Proverbs 19:18
16One who keeps a mitzvah guards his soul, but one who neglects His ways will die. 17One who is kind to the poor lends to Adonai, and Adonai will reward him for his good deed. Discipline your son while there is hope. Do not set your heart on his death. 19One with great rage will pay a penalty. For if you rescue him, you will have to do it again. 20Listen to advice and accept instruction, so that in the end you may be wise.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Let not thy soul spare for his crying - This is a hard precept for a parent. Nothing affects the heart of a parent so much as a child's cries and tears. But it is better that the child may be caused to cry, when the correction may be healthful to his soul, than that the parent should cry afterwards, when the child is grown to man's estate, and his evil habits are sealed for life.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18While there is hope - While he is still young, and capable of being reformed.
